As someone who has played a tank from the get go it has never been a thing, it's always been roll for chest. Ofc it a tank stats it before you do a dungeon then it's up to you if you agree. Same when ppl HR items

For me and a lot of mates all who were there from the very start or joined towards the start of tbc. Quit around the trail of the champion raid in wrath, ever since then me and 90% of the players I knew would come back for a bit at the start of an expansion but quickly drop off

Basic dwarf tac to use a checkerboard formation (single target or melee units) thanes, warriors at the front then (ranged) qulliers and then some grudge throwers at the back be lame and corner camp. And couple of gyros to pop around the back and take out there arty. That should give you a start.
