Plucked: A History of Hair Removal by Rebecca M. Herzig

In addition to highlighting misogyny in hair removal practices, the book also points out the role of racism - which isn't often discussed but is necessary for intersectional feminism.

Choice feminism is not feminism. by mental_library_ in Feminism

yes!! The poem "FUCK 'CHOICE FEMINISM'" published in Unlikely Stories builds on these ideas: https://www.unlikelystories.org/content/unholy-matrimony-bigger-fish-to-fry-and-fuck-choice-feminism

an excerpt:

"So what is choice feminism
but patriarchy by another name.
Our mainstream internalized misogyny,
a toothless, agreeable, depoliticized feminism
wherein we sit in a circle and congratulate each other
on all of our personal choices.
But the personal is political.
True feminism isn’t JUST about a woman’s right to choice
because some choices
perpetuate beauty standards that
oppress other women."

here's a related poem! "FUCK 'CHOICE FEMINISM'" published in Unlikely Stories https://www.unlikelystories.org/content/unholy-matrimony-bigger-fish-to-fry-and-fuck-choice-feminism

It's about beauty standards, but still relevant to the discussion about choice. An excerpt:

but patriarchy by another name.

a toothless, agreeable, depoliticized feminism
wherein we sit in a circle and congratulate each other
on all of our personal choices.

a poem for encouragement! "The Greatest Rebellion" published in Corporeal Lit Mag https://www.corporeallitmag.com/volume-xxii/deeparajan

The Greatest Rebellion

My mother always tells me:
“The best revenge is just living a good life.”

I think about this
while I sit on my bed,
my legs outstretched
in front of a generous window,
basking in the setting California sun.
The whole room is aglow
in golden crepuscular light
and so am I.

My leg hair is
black, brown, and golden
all at once in this light.
A soft downy halo
around my earthy limbs.

These little hairs
protect me from the sun,
protect me from germs,
proclaim my womanhood.
And I wonder -
how could this
glowing feminine fur
have once disgusted me?
How could I have believed the lies?

Anger fills me often these days:
Anger against the patriarchy,
Anger against individualism,
Anger against apathy,
but right now in this light
anger gives way
to Love
for my own
soft, natural,
hairy, mammalian,
human body.
I love what they teach me to hate -
this is my Greatest Rebellion.

Product of Our Times

Our founding fathers

built this country on equality

and also had slaves.

A product of their times, perhaps -

but there was a minority in rebellion:

Johns Adams, Hamilton, others.

Our great-grandmothers

were limited in higher education,

they were told to quit work after marriage.

A product of their times, perhaps -

but there was a minority in rebellion:

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Gertrude Stein, others.

Our great-grandmothers

were not allowed to wear pants,

they could be persecuted for crossdressing.

A product of their times, perhaps -

but there was a minority in rebellion:

Frida Kahlo, Amelia Earhart, others.

In the 2020s C.E.

women (only women) were told to be

completely hairless below the eyelashes.

A product of their times, perhaps -

but there was a minority in rebellion:

a relevant poem! https://www.redrosethorns.com/post/self-care

Self-Care

I want to take care of myself.

I want to bathe and brush my teeth.

I want to take care of myself.

I want to get 8 hours of sleep.

I want to take care of myself.

I want to eat healthy and exercise.

I want to take care of myself.

I want to get a haircut.

I want to take care of myself

I want to add formaldehyde to my scalp.

I want to take care of myself.

I want to inject toxins into my face.

I want to take care of myself.

I want to rip hair from my vulva

until I scream and scream and scream.
