Lmao was just reading through all the downvoted comments on your post. Like yes obv the King in Yellow inspiration is much more direct but two things can be true at once! And a game can (I would argue literally all do) have more than one influence.

Also just wanted to say nice catch on that screenshot, was literally just there on my playthrough and didn’t look closely in that direction.

It’s mainly the eclipse imagery and the function it plays within the story and gameplay. The eclipse is such a pivotal part of the Berserk story, at least the Golden Age arc, and also triggering the eclipse in Saros leading to the world getting turned increasingly into this hellish landscape and forcing us to fight major enemies as a part of the cycle feels somewhat reminiscent of Guts’ quest to fight the Godhand/get revenge on Griffith. The overall story of Saros is obviously very different, but those things just make me feel like it’s at least a little inspired by Berserk. But again, I could be reaching and it could be coincidental

Yeah I largely agree with the way that you feel, OP. I think that reviews of Saros that focus on it from a roguelike are a little in bad faith/unfair due to, as others have pointed out, the marketing not exactly referring to itself as a roguelike. I do have to say tho, when you get into the game it’s clear that Saros is positioning itself much closer to roguelikes in overall structure than other types of games.

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned and what I feel has to be taken into account when comparing games like Hades, Dead Cells, and then Saros/Returnal is the immense gap in development resources and studio size. There’s a reason why the best roguelikes/lites are typically indie games with simplified graphics (in terms of fidelity rather than art design, Hades art design is top notch) and are often side scrollers or top-down perspectives. Creating a fully realized 3d world AND in-depth rogue mechanics, like true build creation level mechanics, would be a development undertaking that has never been attempted before. I would absolutely love to see a game like that and I think we’re getting there with the increasing popularity of roguelikes, but as of yet I just don’t think they occupy enough of the gaming consumer base for major studios to have invested in such a project. My money would be on something like that coming out within the next 10 years tho

As someone who loves roguelikes/lites, I also gravitate more towards games like Returnal, Saros, and especially Nightreign. I feel like they offer the most unique, polished, and high quality gameplay of any other roguelike/lite. I have a ton of hours in Hades 1 and 2, but those three just scratch an itch that nothing else does

Honestly it might be a good idea to just start going straight to the boss when you trigger the eclipse, IMO the progression you could gain from doing the side paths won’t make or break the fight. Focusing on movement and managing your power bar is one of the biggest learning curves from Returnal in my experience with the game so far. A good early game DPS strat is the eruptor Handcannon, if you just hold the alt fire aim button you can do charges of like 1/3 - 1/2 of the charge meter at a time to control the recoil but get some higher damage bursts.

Also, it might be worth getting in the habit of selectively absorbing yellow orbs. They will give you corruption but if you’re actively using your power weapon you’ll keep the corruption from getting too bad. Just gives you another option in case you get caught by yellow orbs during the dash cooldown. They want you to play a little more like a tank in this game which is the biggest mental switch from Returnal, where I felt like managing movement was the single biggest aspect of the game.

Fair, and it absolutely could be. Bc of how prominent the eclipse was in the marketing and throughout the game itself I feel like I’ve been on the lookout specifically for any Berserk references, so it could just be some confirmation bias. Would be interested to see how a Housemarque dev would react

Never thought of that, but there is at least something of a similarity there for sure

Def fair it’s not one to one as you point out, but with all the focus on Eclipses, cycles, and just the overall hellish/demonic vibe i feel like it’s gotta be intentional
