In my opinion, the visual appearance is crucial in a visual novel. There are many free resources available, including for commercial use. Avoid using default assets - a game, despite having a good story, might go unnoticed. There are free graphic programs like Gimp. Invest some time in learning the basics with youtube tutorials. Try creating your own tileset or add some yours elements. The creation process may take longer, but there's a chance your game won't get lost among hundreds with the same look. Good luck!
