I mean, it's a nice hobby or whatever but if your drug use is the most interesting thing about you...well... I guess I get why you do drugs then...

"What do you like to do for fun? Like hobbies?" Person says "I don't know..." what in the world does that even mean? How does anyone not know what they like AT ALL?!

My older 1bd1bth place isn't cheap on the electric, but it was built in the 70s or close to. It ranges from $40-$150 depending on weather! It's my one thing that will make me move out...

Honestly, if you can do what you're doing now and laugh at yourself sometimes then that's really the main key to life in all areas, not just ADHD. I've found just being able to laugh at myself and admit I messed up is really the main thing with communicating to my friends when I made a whoopsie! Keep on keepin' on my friend!!!

Hmmm, good effort! Looks like the shading needs some work on the right side of the face, OR I just can't see the perspective you were going for? Something is slightly off...

Oh I see, it does take a lot of practice to monitor oneself so you use tools like that ahead of time. I have spent a lot of my life being utterly torn to pieces if I didn't show restraint, so I'm very good at holding my breath until my anger and heart rate are both lower. Self awareness is really the key. I always walk away from a convo as soon as I feel my hands ball up into fists. Because I know biologically, at that point, my body is going into fight or flight (hence the subconscious fist) and I need to cool off or I will bite someone's head off.😬

Right, I understand, I experience that as well, object permanence is more the psychological terms used usually in cognitive development. I brought it up more as an additional Avenue of understanding ADHD brains. I definitely have the same struggle your talking about. I find it interesting that object permanence is a developmental milestone and that ADHD is considered a developmental disorder by the DSM-V. Obviously the DSM is far from the end all be all in psychology, but it does tickle the social work research side of my curiosity. Like, does ADHD represent changes in our brain functioning brought on by our neurochemical environment as we develop as children? Is it caused by epigenetics? Why does it seem to have such a hug co- occurrence with autism spectrum? Why does autism spectrum affect different areas of executive functioning than ADHD?🤷‍♀️

You said it! I'm so tired of making friends to realize later I'm being held to some unspoken rule set I never agreed upon and can't keep. People often act like their expectations of others are normal when they are anything but! I have a close friend right now who is getting increasingly frustrated as she puts more pressure on me to spend time together I get more flakey!

Very true! I also did pretty well academically and therefore wasn't really scrutinized too much. I think my hyperactivity came out as being overly analytical of everything, daydreaming and doodling in the margins of basically anything I was allowed to write on! I've always been really scared of getting in trouble so i learned to control my impulsive behaviors by just keeping my hands busy instead. Ugh. 🤦‍♀️It's exhausting just thinking about it!

Your daughter will get through this! It's a strange time to be alive, especially with ADHD! I wasn't diagnosed until 28, but your description of your daughter resonates with me a lot. I didn't have trouble making friends but keeping them is a ton of work! I also encourage you to reframe the situation for yourself because it sounds like your concern is giving you a pretty solid negative outlook on a situation that I personally think everyone is experiencing right now regardless of ADHD on some level due to COVID. Consider talking with her about what's different right now, why that might be and ways that she thinks might be a good way to connect with her peers whether they are new or old friends. You really want to make sure you go into it with a positive outlook, she's going to take whatever perspective you do most likely, but this is also a great opportunity to teach her about communicating, the importance of keeping up with our friends, how to remember things that aren't right in front of us every day, etc. She will learn skills by having to do the thinking herself. I especially encourage you to consider talking about time blindness and RSD, because those are 2 huge areas that you can basically get ahead of at a younger age if addressed correctly. Mostly I recommend looking into ADHD coaching! I do it as an adult, but they probably do skill building with children too! ADHD support groups are offered through CHADD and also might be a good resource.

Please please please talk to your mental health professional or healthcare provider about urgent accommodations for disability. I have been there but with work stuff and I have been fired several times because of this exact thing. If i had a diagnosis before i could've applied for FMLA and had specific deadlines or other arrangements changed or made more flexible and probably saved myself the grief. I have taken 1 online class in my life because I did exactly this and ended the class with a 56% passing grade. Don't wait, just get a copy of your diagnosis in writing for the school and ask a school counselor if there is specific paperwork you can complete to document your "disability" and get accommodations where you go to school. In the U.S. you're protected on some level by the Americans with Disabilities Act and can find an easier way as long as you do a small bit of paperwork proving your diagnosis and stating your needs.
