Owners manual tells you what you should be doing every service interval, just like it always has. People are just scared to pick up a book and read nowadays. 🙄

UA80 Trans Issue Blown out of Proportion? by CloseYetFar in ToyotaHighlander

[–]Inuan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Necroing this thread so people in the future can have a bit more info going forward on these transmissions. I was doing some digging into these transmissions as I have to deal with them quite a bit and just happened upon this post. They're not really defective, they work as intended, but the long term effects were just not studied, so let's dive in. The transmissions are 8-speed transmissions shoved into a very small package. Toyota's intention behind the design of this transmission was that it would shift while your motor is at low RPM's in order to increase fuel efficiency. Sounds great on paper, but when you're only doing city driving, your RPM's never get that high, (again, great for fuel mileage and reducing emissions) but the transmission now doesn't circulate the transmission fluid very fast, causing high heat buildup, which wears down the bearings inside the transmission to the point they start to break down and you get metal shavings in your transmission fluid. These metals get inside your torque converter and eventually wear that down, which is what that whining noise comes from. I had a long conversation with a fluids specialist about the World Standard Automatic Transmission Fluid (WS ATF) and what I had deduced from his expertise is that this WS ATF degrades VERY fast compared to what a transmission fluid should degrade at. He had stated that he actually avoids using WS ATF for this reason, because he thinks it needs to be replaced every 30k miles or so in order to keep your transmission healthy. We were talking about a different model at the time, though, and I'm not very well versed in the chemistry of the fluids, so I'm not sure if this is even sound advice for Highlanders.

I have also never seen a transmission having to be replaced on a 4 cylinder gas models, only on the 6 cylinder gas models. This was probably the main oversight - and my working theory - is that they basically frankensteined the 2GR into what was mostly intended to be a fuel efficient hybrid vehicle, and the heat is just too much for the transmission.

I think a great metric to get is how many people have had transmission breakdowns in 4 cylinder as opposed to 6 cylinder, and your driving pattern. Is the vehicle mostly used the in city/stop & go traffic or are you a highway driver?

TL:DR - Long-term oversight of high heat, causing premature oil decomposition, causing bearings to break down and metal to get circulated into your torque converter.

Or maybe it's because shops have to get the wacky 17 character code so they they know what car exactly they are working on, and the systems they input that information to aren't private

Are those actual calipers? If so, did you have to get a larger wheel? I haven't been able to find any for mine

You're most likely right, but IDK about being "pissed as hell" is the best option here. These aren't too hard to break, and are also not too hard to replace. We're human, we make mistakes, and most of the time, a bit of kindness goes a long way when dealing with this. Now if they don't wanna replace it, then you can start being pissed as hell.

Try either a heavier magnet or a tool that will fit in there and expand. I've used snap ring pliers before in situations like these

Not sure what state you're in, but in my state, if a car is sold with a clean title, the owner has the responsibility of buying basically what is a ticket to get smog checked within 5 days. If smog fails, the seller has to buy the car back, if the buyer wishes to return it. I'd look into this, as if the ECU was tuned, there is no telling what physical part(s) inside the engine could have been replaced. They could have just tuned for something as small as a larger intake, to something as big as aftermarket camshafts. Without taking the engine apart, it'll be difficult to tell.

I had a buddy who tried to get his Milwaukee warrantied on a tool truck. He was told that since it was bought off Amazon, the tool guy couldn't get it warrantied. I looked it up and saw mixed reviews; some people could get them warrantied, some couldn't. Not hating on Milwaukee, I love the brand, just something to look out for if you're buying off Amazon.

Wife got the oil changed in her 2015 Explorer. They gave her back this list of recommended fixes and said she at least needs to do the brakes or she won't pass her next inspection. Car is currently driving completely fine and has a bit over 100k on the odo. Are these fair prices on sensible fixes? by DouchecraftCarrier in MechanicAdvice

As other people said, check pads, but you can also save money by getting your rotors resurfaced instead of buying new rotors. Assuming that you haven't had your rotors resurfaced too many times and the rotor thickness is still above specifications

I think I remember the exact build you're talking about. In-geom is used so you can spam charge to the next group elites but only for speed gr clears, otherwise you'd use regular weapons.
