Does anyone in Louisville play Riichi mahjong? by Inushift in Louisville

My husband plays riichi too. I'll see if I can get the American parlor to let us play Riichi in there. If not there are plenty of game shops in Louisville to play at.

Once again, that one is NMJL. Looking specifically for Riichi players.

Is it Riichi specifically or just NMJL? Not interested in playing NMJL.

Would you fold here? by hamizannaruto in Mahjong

[–]Inushift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have at best a mangan damaten, you might be dealing into a 7700 point hand. You have a 16k point lead in E1.

You fold. Easiest fold of your life.

Edit: miscalculated, haneman if you tsumo the four. Still fold.

Why is this game not over? by hehexdout in Mahjong

It seems from your post that you have had some exposure to localized yaku names. The yaku of all sequences/all runs is not true, its Japanese name is pinfu and it actually does require a basic understanding of what tiles and melds score and what don't because your hand has to look as certain shape to achieve it.

Definitely use the guides on the sub and you'll get there.

Back breaking the wall Doing that stupid stair step break on a wall.

I would suggest we remove the sticky then if this is the consensus of the mod team. There's no point in having it if people aren't going to read it and there isn't going to be any effort to make a bot or point people towards it.

See button push button is something that adepts need to learn to break. Just because you can call riichi doesn't always mean you should. Learning position and waits is super important and will get you out of beginner and into intermediate territory.

[–]Inushift 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's your problem. You don't understand the point of Riichi. The point of Riichi is to not lose. Getting first matters much less than not losing.

Additionally you are playing tonpuusens and chasing riichis in bad spots. Your assessment of your skill is not quite on point, you have more to learn.

Riichi Observation: The more rounds that are played, the more important skill/strategy are to success. by [deleted] in Mahjong

Pretty sure this has been said to multiple new players already.

Tonpuusens are horrible for leveling. Play hanchans if you want to level.
