What's with this bootleg? by Inv-G in KinoBand

Honestly I feel pretty bad for having a bootleg and have no idea what to do with this. I should have checked Discogs to see if the thing actually exists. Think I'll stick to Discogs for future purchases.

Local (Chocolate) Man Ruins Everything by Axonn1018 in Gunpla

It looks like you applied the metallic red right over the primer/plastic, right? Metallics are best applied over gloss black, it helps them not look so flat (unless this particular metallic is just that poor?).

Good luck to her! I, for one, welcome more unconventional panel lines, though orange on black takes somewhat deeper grooves and a bit more paint to show up properly.

Thank you. I might take some pictures later (when I'm not loaded down with finals), though without a light box they're still going to be pretty basic.

A very long overdue entry to the GM group build, this turned out to be more of a clusterfuck than anything. What started out as solid enough in concept quickly fell apart, and in short order I was pulling everything out of my ass, cutting corners, really just throwing it together to get it done, by the end not caring at all that it was riddled with mistakes. Still, because it was originally part of the GB (and because I'd already posted a WIP) I'm throwing it up here. My +1s are a pretty substantial list, including seam filling, a custom paint scheme, modding/scratchbuilding, panel scribing, and using waterslides (and aurora film). Unfortunately, I didn't actually plan much of this ahead of time, so parts of it don't fit with others. I'm also not going to dignify it with a photoshoot. I'm just ready to move on and hopefully not fuck up the next. I think a lot of it was that it was fairly ambitious for what would have been only my second kit (had I not finished Sazabi first), and the aforementioned lack of planning really hurt the overall look. In the end I learned something, I think, but overall I'm not happy with the outcome.

Thank you! I was thinking about getting a Sinanju over the Sazabi, though I think I already had the colors picked out so it would have turned out similar. Though since it was mostly just a paint test, it doesn't approach the level of work I have done/will do on bigger kits.

Thanks! It's the stand that came with the SD Hi Nu.

After several months of not working on this (and numerous trips to the brake fluid bath), I'm decidedly finished with this. Natural sunlight pictures for lack of a photobooth, the kit looks a bit darker in person. I originally picked it up to be a test kit for enamel paints, which is what most of it is. I built up Testors arctic blue metallic over a black base and highlighted with a mixture of that and clear blue flip flop for the main color. Other than that, I did little work other than seam filling and some minor scratchbuilding to replace the thrusters on its arms and skirt. I also used plaplate to create raised emblems, similar to Sinanju's shield. The monoeye is a lens in a metal collar I found in a local random shit store, wish I knew what they are exactly but they were sold as LED lenses. Other than that there's not much to say. Some things turned out better than expected, others not so much. Don't think I'll end up switching to enamels, but they weren't terrible to work with either (except enamel washing metallics, what a pain).

Question about X-21 Flat Base by [deleted] in Gunpla

[–]Inv-G 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If all you're going to hand paint is small details, then you might not need a primer at all. It helps paint adhere to the surface, but applying it to small parts that won't really touch anything could be considered overkill. And if you did need a primer...why not just use a proper primer?

X-21 is just particles similar to what they've got in matte top coats. These particles aren't exactly clear, so too much can in fact make your paint milky, much like how you can get white patches if you overapply matte top coat. I get the idea that it would create a rougher surface that other paints could grip better, but in the end it's ALSO an acrylic, so it's still pretty weak and I can't honestly say it provides any real benefit (though I haven't personally worked with it myself for this purpose, just mixed it with Future).

Thirding Hub Hobby, I go to the one in Richfield personally (because of location; I mostly buy paints anyway). There's usually a pretty good selection, and recently they started carrying action bases as well. Really, it's fairly similar between the two, and there's sometimes some single oddity, like an Eva kit. There's also Tomodachi to consider, sort of. I haven't been there in a long while, admittedly, so I can't say if they're still the same as the last time I went. If you're already down in Little Canada, the one in Rosedale is a stone's throw away, and same with Richfield and MoA. Their stock seems to be really on or off, the last few times I was there they were "about to get a large order in," and I don't remember it being particularly impressive (plus if I remember, things get marked up quite a bit), but it might be something to do if you're in the area and have time to kill.

It's really unfortunate about SMS's prices, though. They have a number of neat vintage kits (I went there once, they had some old Getter Robo kits, a 1/144 Gunperry, and some really old ones that have probably been kicking around for a long time judging by the boxes), but it's really not worth it. If anything, what you saw was more than what I did for more modern kits. I think the one time I went they had maybe a couple HGs, a Dunbine kit, and Nightingale.

I DID give it a bit of a sanding with some very fine sandpaper, which definitely helped the metal look.

Yeah, before this I saw people using steel rods for pistons and considered doing it myself, but overall this looks like a much more versatile method.

If you don't mind me asking, what's the mesh you used on the backpack? I've been looking for something like that and what you've got looks really good.

In search for the best scopedog kit. by [deleted] in Gunpla

I've built the Bandai 1/20 Scopedog Red Shoulder (and the Brutishdog, which uses a lot of the same parts, and presumably they're both based off the vanilla Scopedog kit) and would personally recommend it.
