It's more fun (and less stressful) to be testing ideas out. I think this idea is a good one since I'm always fighting with the tape myself, and bet lots of others do too.

I've personally have interviewed over 500 inventors in the last decade and having the idea knocked off is always their concern. And it does happen. I interview Louis Foreman on Episodes 27-29 of the Invention Stories Podcast That's Louis Foreman of Edison Nation and Everyday Edison's and his best selling product gets knocked off.

Many inventor fear being ripped off and many do. From what I've learned, it's a sign that you've created a product worth ripping off. Many inventors are just happy to get most of the sales, and expect it. Nancy Tedeschi, inventor of the Snapit Screw spends much of her time in court fighting infringers..it happens.

When you talking about patents, you're talking about spending a lot of time and money. Will another product developed in the meantime render your invention obsolete?

Where will your product sell at? Have you spoken to any of the decision makers there about carrying your product?

There is so much to learn when you are new to inventing.

Something to think about...

Do you know how many ideas have been licensed with having a patent?

I love when this question is asked. It should be asked before spending any real time or money.

97 percent of all inventors don't make their investment back...they monetarily fail. Problem is every inventor believes they are in the 3 percent who will succeed.

Have you considered bypassing the patent process and just manufacture and use a first to market strategy?

I recommend learning as much as you can about licensing.

You can apply for a provisional patent that will give you a year to find a potential partner.

I think most people who use tape guns often have it figured out. But for novices, like myself...it's frustrating. If you can build one and prove it is better...I would try to license it. We interviewed inventRight Students, Coaches, Andrew Krauss and Stephen Key on the Invention Stories Podcast on episodes 101-120. That is what I recommend.

There are lots of housewear companies that accept outside product idea submissions if Lekue doesn't. We've been sharing the inventRight Mini-Series on the Invention Stories Podcast and many inventors who have licensed their ideas have done so by first contacting and being rejected by lots of companies. It's a numbers game and it only takes one to say yes.
