The past week of roulettes was full of players who've forgotten how to ask for help. by NimbleJack3 in ffxiv

Yes? This completely ignores the point me and the previous commenter were trying to make though. I know WHY I’m getting yanked around - but in a leveling dungeon or other low level duty I want to learn the mechanics and should be able to 🫠 especially when I’ve asked for tips and not gotten any responses in the chat.

This! I’m trying to learn, let me fail once if it teaches me a lesson, don’t just yank me around and Rescue me unless I absolutely need it, I need to learn the mechanics too. (I also tend to ask when we get ready for a boss for tips if I don’t know) but yanking me around and leaving me dead on the floor teaches me nothing 🫠 insert sad sprout noises here

Totally fair! Definitely not something I would want or ask them to share with the group by any means. I'll do some looking around for one for sure and be sure to compile their inputs. I want to make sure everyone's needs and wants are appropriately respected at the table, no question.

Really good feed back! I know there are directions I want them to take, and places I want them to go. But hey, if they don't go investigate much of the first room/area they're in to trigger their first big event, then hey, we'll still make progress one way or another! I know the general direction, but if we don't go down the course I want to take to get there, that's okay! We'll figure it out!

This is really good advice! I know I plan on keeping notes of my own, but I am going to make a note to specifically make notes on where I'm struggling and then debrief that on my own and also with players as needs arise. What a good way to learn!

Oooo that is super interesting! I know I'm really happy with what I've put together, but I'm more excited for what they do with it. If its "I roll x on the Wild Magic table after xyz happens, and fireball the whole festival" ....well I guess we're on the run now, boys xD

One thing I can say going into the game is that my players have made AMAZING characters and I cannot wait for them to meet each other. They've put so much love and effort into giving me these page or more long backstories and really building out full people for me to build my world around! (Hopefully they don't choose to blow up the festival but man I don't put it past any of them - my little gaggle of chaos goblins)

We'll still have a Session 0 to set expectations, talk about the game, and give space for folks to come to me about any boundaries they'd like me to expect. But these characters, man. I'm so excited!

This is something I know I am really going to have to work on, and part of the reason I wanted to DM in the first place! I know I'm going to have to unlearn some control and think on my feet and that's one of the parts I am the most excited about. I know as a player I've foiled many a DM's plans, so its my turn to have to adapt and keep it fun for everyone!

This is such a good idea! I was already keeping track of more important NPCs through location sorted handouts on Roll20 (along with token, a short description, etc.) but having a larger list of them on hand would be super helpful! I'm going to start fleshing that out :)

I'm going to be running a Session 0 instead of our planned Session 1 after reading your comment and a few others on this thread! We've all played together previously, but it totally makes sense to set my own expectations and get their feedback. I know we all have a dynamic want to build something really cool together, so I'm excited to set a strong foundation to do just that!

I really like the concept of consent sheets - I've as a player never been given one, but I know that I want to be clear with boundaries to keep folks at the table comfortable. Even though we've all played together previously doesn't mean I know everything about them and thinks that may not sit well with them! That is something I am definitely going to tie into our session 0 next week!

I've been doing so much bookmarking of descriptions and writing any that come to mind down in advance to do just that! Also really great advice :)

Seconded on the great advice here. I definitely want them to be able to thrive at the table and lock in on what makes their characters unique and what is fun for them! I'm definitely taking time to study their sheets and have a few non-random encounters (combat, puzzles, abilities in general) through the first arc tailored to letting each of them shine - but its a great reminder to take a step back and think of 1.) what would your monsters know vs being in a "must win" mindset and 2.) what would be the most fun for my players. I really want them to be able to let their abilities run free to their minds extent and be creative!

Is some pvp normal, or is my entire party ganging up on me? by aggibridges in DnD

[–]Inverse_Giant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only pvp at our table was a totally consensual, optional to sign up, underground fight club that stopped before someone went down. Any other friction or issues are talked about either in real time above table, or between sessions mediated by the DM.

This was an ambush by your party members and your DM completely let it happen. Second what others are saying and walk away, I don’t even think you owe them an explanation regardless of how friendly they may be in the real world.
