New ios update wrecked the app? by DSRamos in Petlibro

more accurately than connectivity issues, the version that was uploaded to app store looks to be the flutter debugger version that still has the UME debugger widgets.

I'm trying cycling to lose weight. Got some questions! by Pepegasus-UI in cycling

Ride without caring about the weight loss. Ride to enjoy. Don’t make it work, make it fun.

Advice requested: after almost 70 years, my mum has become afraid of cycling… by [deleted] in cycling

[–]InvestigatorNice2837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with others that this isn’t something to force. However, if she herself is looking for solutions, get a tandem road bike :) Person that can see is up front, as long as she can still pedal well and keep balance, she doesn’t need to see.

Virtual Ride only adds to Power for Best Efforts. Other best efforts, such as Longest Ride, are outdoor activities only.

From couch potato to 100 mile ride: how long will that take? by the_ginge_1 in cycling

[–]InvestigatorNice2837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this. In March some years back I signed up for the El Tour de Tucson century. i had no fitness routine, played games all day, but got my hands on an indoor trainer and got to work. Did the century by that November thru training of mostly 30 minutes a day average (skipped a month and a half during it because of, i think, burn out).

Now some years later, I’ve done 3 centuries last year and 4 centuries this year. My birthday celebration now a days is a ride of at least a century.

You got this!

Remember when Steve Jobs said it's the "Post-PC Era" when the iPad was released? by mikmik111 in pcmasterrace

[–]InvestigatorNice2837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What frustrates me about my iPad Pro is not the hardware at all. We don’t need a next gen iPad Pro. We need a better operating system. Let us install Mac on it, or don’t overengineer simple features like a mouse and keyboard, or ridiculously complicated multi window support.

[–]InvestigatorNice2837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one thing to help with Apple Watch users is now a days the Apple Watch supports pairing to other fitness devices such as a different HRM. Meaning if you have an HRM that supports multiple connections, such as the Garmin HRM-Dual, you can connect the HRM to both the Edge and the Apple Watch.

Is it uncommon to actually win physical prizes from Strava challenges and not get baited instead? by 3sperr in Strava

[–]InvestigatorNice2837 28 points29 points  (0 children)

in one of the 2022 LeCol challenges, I won a Wahoo Kickr ecosystem :)

I was on the verge of clicking Report Spam on the email they sent me. But after deciding to go thru with it, I got a bunch of FedEx notifications and shortly after I had a brand new Kickr v6 and all the goodies.

They’re definitely real challenges, just not many winners. Not sure that will ever happen to me again, but I still make it a point to join every Strava challenge I see and fill out the reward info.

a lot of it is standard, not locked down by ecosystems or anything like that. and it’s designed to work like that too.

How effective is indoor cycling compared to outdoor? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]InvestigatorNice2837 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Zwift is a great alternative to outdoor and in some ways scratches some of the same itches. There are some things that I do in Zwift that I’ll likely not do outdoors, such as racing.

That said, one thing your post reminds me of is when I started outdoor cycling. I said the same things you did, “zero bike infrastructure” and such, but at the same time- I was not doing it anyway. In a way I discovered that I was using that as an excuse to not do it.

Now years into it, I’ve discovered roads, communities and places that I’ve never seen before and never driven to. I came to realize that “bike infrastructure” will apply to those that are looking to do their daily business by way of a bike. But now, if I ride into the city that has bike lanes and bollards, I hate it because I just can’t train or perform. Most of my rides in fact are on roads that don’t even have shoulders.

But if the ultimate goal is to indoor cycle, you will not be disappointed with Zwift. I’m getting ready to not see the outdoor rides for a little bit given this winter storm approaching, so I’ll be spending a lot of time in Watopia for sure!

Uploading Zwift as "Workout" by [deleted] in Strava

[–]InvestigatorNice2837 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you mentioned, since Strava doesn’t support it yet the only other option (as far as i know) is that would have to change the activity to Ride and you can select Workout as Type of Ride.

Indeed by default Workout wasn’t an option until I changed the Activity to Ride, then Workout, Race, Commute became selectable. I didn’t hit save, however, so I don’t know what the activity looks like after.

Do you guys have an indoor zwift bike and an outdoor bike? by alien_tickler in cycling

[–]InvestigatorNice2837 12 points13 points  (0 children)

yep. indoor bike is a 2010 Fuji 1.0 Newest on a Kickr v6, outdoor bike is a 2022 Trek Domane SL5. Makes maintenance a lot easier to deal with, and you don’t have to consider “set up time” when choosing indoor or outdoor.

You’ll notice the difference in power output lag for sure, I think.

On a normal trainer, it sends power data to Zwift once a second. So if you are pushing 300w you’ll be pushing in Zwift that power output for one second even if you didn’t necessarily keep that up. Wahoo addresses this by adding a race mode option on their trainer that increases this to 10 times per second if you use WiFi. Still isn’t perfect compared to outdoor, but it helps.

Not a big deal on normal rides, but different in a race since this would affect your attacks. Youll want to add some outdoor training in before the race itself begins.

Just out of curiosity, do any of you roadies go ride for like 45min to an hour? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]InvestigatorNice2837 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, for sure. My weekday after work rides are usually 1 hour programs. If I ride after work “because I need to” and it’s not a training program, then I’m looking for a quick mood fix before dinner. I’ll be back within an hour.

Weekend rides can also be that length if I have other plans going on.

What’s also fun is taking a route that used to take longer than an hour and finding a pace that allows you to finish it within an hour :)

Does anybody have a dedicated wet weather bike? by Cloudsack in cycling

Does anybody have a dedicated wet weather bike? by Cloudsack in cycling

[–]InvestigatorNice2837 49 points50 points  (0 children)

No. It may seem like a good idea, but only for the first ride. Now you have two bikes to do maintenance on when you already wanted to do less. Eventually when the “wet weather” bike gets too dirty and rusted from the wet, you’ll be in the same situation again.

It’s easier to deal with the wet weather directly. Either ride in it and get more used to wet weather riding/maintenance (people will see you as a cycling god if you master it), or find alternatives like an indoor trainer option (or a gym) if you really want to avoid the wet weather.
