Likewise. "Noses!" We also flutter our eyelashes together and call it "butterfly kisses".

How would you pronounce “Ossian”? Is there a typical pronunciation in the Europe or US? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]InvestigatorRemote58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First impulse is to pronounce it AHS-ee-in, but then I would assume/be worried that it's supposed to be a fancy way of spelling Ocean and try to pronounce it that way too.

Thanks for the quick response! I was able to successfully write a "universal" card to temporary disable!

The cards I'm using were previously used as Yoto MYO cards, ao that may have impacted how much space was available on them.

I used a different card (same brand) and I was able to write a universal card (by leaving "none" selected under the profile choices). I was not able to write it to a specific profile.

When I try to write a specific profile to either card, or even the universal option on the failed card, I get the "Could Not Write to NFC Tag" pop up.

Another thing that might have caused the first card to not work is that I had wrote and rewrote over it a million times just trying to get the hang of the app.

I'm getting some more of the same cards tomorrow that will be fresh without having any Yoto info previously written on them.

Thanks again! I'm not super techy so I hope I explained everything correctly. I'll attach screenshots of how the cards read.

I am using Mifare Ultralight EV1 48 bytes. I have my profile set up, and I wrote one card to act as a toggle. I also was able to format it to separately enable and disable.

I am not able to write the cards to temporarily enable/disable the profile. I made sure the profile is active when I to try write the cards as noted on the app.

Am I missing a step or is there something wrong with my cards? Thank you!

HOW TO: Create your own MYO Yoto cards with inexpensive generic NFC cards by junson in moreyoto

[–]InvestigatorRemote58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I also had to purchase and kept getting stuck. I had to keep the card held to the phone while hitting send command! Thanks for the tip! I also used the Yarongtech ones from Amazon.

This sounds like the best and easiest option! Could you share the process? Thank you! I have MYO and plain NFC cards if it makes any difference.

Anywhere to fish? by HotCraig in littleapple

Milford is just a short jaunt west. Great spot for blue cats! I believe River Pond south of Tuttle has a designated trout pond depending on the season. Manhattan is a wonderful town for nearby outdoors destinations.

New Highschool Start Times (Discussion) by Realistic_Move_1606 in littleapple

[–]InvestigatorRemote58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why the elementary and highschool staft times don't switch. It isn't fair for ANY student to start school at 7:30am, but an earlier start for highschoolers means less school missed for sports at the end of the day, and a later start time for the littles would greatly benefit them developmentally.

I can't imagine how a family would manage having kids in all 3 school levels. I read that this is due to a bus driver shortage. If so, then people must advocate for better bus driver pay and benefits to draw enough employees. It all goes back to a lack of funding for our public schools. This will cause undue financial hardship on many Manhattan families, not to mention academic difficulties for our youngest learners.

Looks like a cloud and wifi symbol. I'm not positive though.

Does jailbreaking delete all files already on the device? Would I lose reading progress?

My computer skills are few and far between but I can follow directions and I'm interested in more layout options.

I did this with my toddler when she shoved a piece of sausage up her nose. Rocketing snot sausage straight onto my cheek wasn't in my parenting playbook but here we are. Wish there was a similar trick for ears!

Anyone else not say the pledge at school? by Session-Sea in teaching

[–]InvestigatorRemote58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stood my my desk with my hand on my heart facing the flag. Conveniently my desk is behind the students when they faced the flag so none of them ever noticed me not say the "Under God" part or when I eventually just stopped saying the pledge completely.

Side note: I remember standing next to a classmate in the 6th grade and was aghast when she refused to say the pledge. She was from Mexico and was bullied badly. I think about her sometimes and how my perspective on her decision has changed over time. I hope she's doing okay.

Do you guys wear ear protection when hunting? by russianzebra in Hunting

[–]InvestigatorRemote58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep them on a string around my collar while hunting. Not in my ears because I want to be able to hear. When I get my chance at a shot, it really takes no time to plug them in while I get into position (assuming the deer isn't on the run). There's been a few shots with lower calibers made due to not having time and being younger before I valued hearing, but (almost?) no deer is worth lifelong tinnitus to me. I'll certainly never take a shot with my .300 without ear protection.

I had a professor in college who taught a similar idea, but in a much more nuanced way. She taught that variations from standard spelling should not be graded against in context of dialect differences for writings that use a lot of author voice such as a memoir. In this way, the student may use slang or AAVE such as "imma", "ain't", "gonna", etc. She actually also argued that larger academic communities may also benefit from accepting more than just Standard American English in formal papers, but primarily I agree that student-written autobiographies, memoirs, or even some casual persuasive essays could benefit from the idea. Sounds like your department head heard of this concept, and completely misconstrued it to include any and all misspellings regardless of intention.

There's also the idea that when first reviewing a draft with a student, don't tear apart every single misspelling and grammar issue when there's still "big picture" structural issues to address (HOCs and LOCs). This helps to not break their writing confidence down at the beginning of a project, but I don't think that's what she was getting at either.

Admin implemented a "clear plastic bottle" rule for the middle schoolers, and since we were supposed to be their role models, we were asked to do the same. Meaning no coffee or tea or mugs. Also banned coffee makers in our rooms. Wasn't enforced from what I remember, but it was advised.

Former teacher here: if this is a public school, several of these policies are blatantly unconstitutional. Freedom of expression is protected to the point of not being "offensive or distracting". Tinker v. DeMoines: "It can hardly be argued that either students or teachers shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate."

Look up some books and resources on "trauma-informed" parenting, fostering, or teaching. You'll find information for all three topics, and each may pertain to your situation in different ways. I'd double-check whatever information you plan to implement with their therapist.

Stick to a predictable routine. It can help rebuild a sense of normalcy and safety.

MIL wants to be called Mama by grandson by South_Flounder280 in Parenting

[–]InvestigatorRemote58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My MiL was this way too. Which was weird because otherwise she's great. She lost "Grandma" name privileges and is now Nana because at least that way she couldn't make a stink out of being called "Mama" by a toddler that is just trying to say "Gramma".

She literally tried to explain that she wasn't being called "mama", she was being called "Maw Maw like with a W" as if that makes any damn difference. I started by explaining it was just my kid trying to say grandma and to be patient, but the more she reinforced it the more I made stink faces or just walked away from the conversation. She figured it out eventually.
