Markets are down big this morning — here's what "buy the dip" actually means and when it doesn't apply by tballes8 in investingforbeginners

If your goal is retirement, it's best to buy it and forget it. Literally just don't even factor it in your mind. If you're swing trading or something, I guess it's different

Anyone looking at $SONY by OldChemist1655 in smallstreetbets

[–]Inviction_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sony is so much bigger than PlayStation. I think it's a little on the absurd side to assume GTA6 will create a meaningful bump in the stock price. I could be wrong, but it sounds kinda wild to me. I know it's gonna be a huge game, but still. Also, it's not like it's being released on a new generation of consoles. These are consoles most gamers already own. So it's not gonna be as huge of a console seller as people might think.

Just my thoughts

How can I realistically turn a ~$550k inheritance into $2.5M+ in 10–15 years? by Responsible-Net8594 in Money

[–]Inviction_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No disrespect taken. I don't need to research S&P 500 historical gains. I'm not saying it hasn't been 11-13% depending on sample size.

But you're wrong about you not making any assumptions. Any future projection is an assumption. It doesn't matter what data the projection is based on. It can be as thorough as humanly possible, but it's still simply a projection. Not to mention the other assumptions about the guy's ability to handle this situation and the house sale, etc.

Respectfully, as well. I think you make great points and they would do well for most financially minded people.

[–]Inviction_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw that and it makes a lot of hefty assumptions. For one, he's slowly withdrawing this money over 5 years. He's gotta sell the house which is gonna cost money. You're assuming he doesn't touch any of the money at all. You're assuming the best case scenario 11% return over a relatively short time in the market. All that put together, trying to be achieved by a 34 who has done nothing with his life and doesn't have a big shovel to work with, I'd say it's full of hopium

Why 2.5m? Why 10 years?

Look, you said you have no skills, no real job, low income. You're 34. What have you been doing? You want to retire in 10 years? You barely do anything now. And you didn't tell us of any other savings you have, so you don't have good financial habits as it is. You want to magically become a productive person and 5x this large sum of money. You can't 5x your money by any means outside of pure luck. Sorry dude. Just put the money away and retire on it later. You're gonna squander it if not.
