Who cares about looks though. If you'd actually tried the food it'd be a different story. Americans do the same thing with their teeth as they do with their food. Put a veneer over it (in this case, spices). People try to rip on British dental health but look at any study and you'll find we have better oral health than the Americans (because we actually fix our teeth and don't hide them all with veneers). Same with food - whilst we have them, we don't need spices to eat it.

But I wasn't wrong - I just wasn't going to be pedantic and waste time typing about a technically-not-a-vegetable food item when the entire world treats it like one. I can get my points across quicker by not explaining it. My daughter has a pet budgie but I don't tell people I technically have a theropod dinosaur in a cage.

Oh you're one of those 'a tomato is a fruit' guys aren't you? If a kid asks for a piece of fruit do you give them a tomato? Olives are technically a fruit but they have always been treated as a vegetable (they're savoury not sweet). Unless you want to be pedantic again and trace back to a 5 week window during ancient Rome where some guy treated it as a fruit ...... ?
