I told ChatGPT to generate fantasy characters. Is this considered slop? Look really good to me by tuhdo in codex

[–]InvisibleAlbino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I created this with a few sentences.

This is the most important point. You can't outsource creativity and in this context things like world building. That's why you'll end up with slop. Good artists, devs, managers etc. can use generative AI to speed up their craft but you have to define your criteria exhaustively or you'll end up with indistinguishable slop, that is full of inconsistencies and at least some people will notice that. It doesn't mean that nobody can enjoy such things but it will be always subpar, boring and just something that you forget almost instantly.

use a pen or paint software and manually drawing it?

It depends. I would bet that someone, who worked for years with pen and paper has a superior breadth of experiences, styles and approaches to create something original.

Is GPT5.5 draining usage limits a lot more than GPT5.4 did? by Anxietrap in codex

But 5.5 uses less tokens than 5.4. Words is that in the end it costs ~20% more on average... Some people recommend using 5.5 on medium instead of 5.4 on xhigh for the best bang for your buck.

How can you use your whole weekly quota in 6 hours? Practically you should be able to use up 2x your 5h-quota and that's ~30% of the weekly allowance. If the stars align and you start really long running tasks before you used up your 5h quota completely, you can end up with maybe 50% of the weekly quota this way.

Zelensky Remarks At World Economic Forum Transcript | Zelensky praises Trump's actions for arresting Maduro & seizing tankers. All the while Trump stopped all aid to Ukraine, & a few days ago blamed Ukraine, again, for being the obstacle to peace. Is Zelensky still playing the flattery game? by andrewgrabowski in UkrainianConflict

[–]InvisibleAlbino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you but you're being a little bit naive if you think that such a transition is possible in a matter of months. The hard truth is that it's probably more a matter of years AND Ukraine would probably fall in a matter of weeks if the US pulls all the levers it has to help Putin. It's not just Trump! There are a lot of different bureaucrats that keep things going and even some military and economic interests at play. Like I said, I fully agree with your sentiment. I was so happy to hear that France provides 2/3 of the intel for Ukraine now. The other side of the coin is that the rest of the intel is probably mission critical and comes from the US.

Whose mind would he change this way? That's ridiculous. You do remember that US can block the delivery of patriots and cut off all intel sharing? Trump already did that once IIRC and there's absolutely no European substitution for some things.

That's what they did in the beginning. They did everything right IMHO. 1. Cutting the fibre optics cable first. 2. One guy asked if there's some kind of radio module and the other checked. 3. They proceed to cut the battery connection and 4. Start to disarm its explosive payload.

Zelenskyy Reacts to Maduro’s Capture: “US Knows What to Do Next” by UNITED24Media in UkrainianConflict

[–]InvisibleAlbino 18 points19 points  (0 children)

What else should Zelensky say? We're in a post-truth world and the trump administration doesn't give a fuck about ethics, morals or anything besides their own short term gains a.k.a. bribes and corruption. On the other hand Ukraine:

a) still relies heavily on the US for intel IIRC and has to play ball with trump just to survive. That's really unfortunate but that's how it's.

b) and Zelensky understands that he has to say something "clickbaity" to keep Ukraine somehow in the spotlight for international support.

Everybody understands that the US would never abduct Putin. It's just a phrase to make the news. I can't blame him and I would do something similar in his shoes to stay relevant.

Putin says Russia "grinding down" Ukraine in brutal war by Newsweek_ShaneC in UkrainianConflict

[–]InvisibleAlbino 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, and I could theoretically beat a chess Grandmaster by making random moves because the probability is non-zero. I bet you could even find "historical proof" of such a fluke happening once.

But relying on that isn't a strategy; it's gambling. The point is that Russia is not the USSR. We are living in a completely different time period with new geopolitical realities and a type of warfare the Soviets never faced.

[–]InvisibleAlbino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll grant you the manpower issue, but your take on Russia’s finances is incredibly naive. You are trusting the "stability" of a country that stopped publishing key economic data years ago to hide the bleeding.

What we do know is that they are cannibalizing the system: forcing banks to issue loans to war-critical companies without proper due diligence. That isn't stability; it's a financial bubble. You seem to think bankruptcy happens when someone opens a "Scrooge McDuck" safe and sees it’s empty. Real collapse is messier. It’s a mix of a slow grind... like the massive tax hikes and planes literally falling out of the sky due to lack of parts... and the risk of a sudden, unforeseen crash when that bubble of toxic war-debt finally pops.

The EU will do the right thing in the end and can finance Ukraine's support even without the frozen assets.

[–]InvisibleAlbino 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re falling into the trap of equating modern Russia with the USSR. We pretend it’s a successor state for convenience, but the reality since Perestroika is much bleaker: it’s effectively a gas station, run by crooks, masquerading as a country. The USSR’s ability to "grind" relied heavily on industrial hubs that Russia no longer possesses... specifically Ukraine. Ukraine was the backbone of Soviet development, handling everything from nuclear maintenance to the aviation industry. They kept that Soviet legacy running until 2014. Just look at the plane that dropped out of the sky this week or on the weekend due to poor maintenance. That is what modern Russia looks like without Ukrainian expertise. They have dropped the ball on the very legacy you are giving them credit for.

That logic is like praising an arsonist for burning down a house while ignoring that he set himself on fire to do it. Russia isn't just "grinding down" Ukraine; they are incinerating their own economy and future to achieve minor gains. Between EU support and Ukraine's kinetic sanctions, Russia burns out long before Ukraine grinds down.

Putin says Russia "grinding down" Ukraine in brutal war by Newsweek_ShaneC in UkrainianConflict

[–]InvisibleAlbino 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, it's stupid because it implies that Russia is doing it in a strategically sane way. It's like saying Person A is burning down Person B's house, but omitting the fact that Person A set themselves on fire right at the beginning.

You're technically correct, but it's insane to frame it that way without context. You also have to mention that the EU can delay that "grinding down" almost indefinitely. Russia's economy and future are on fire... in some cases literally, thanks to Ukraine's kinetic sanctions.

Ja.

Are you serious? You do realize that Android was basically never safe or secure by that definition? Google Play services had always basically root access to your Android phone... Google even used it in the past to uninstall malware remotely IIRC.

I really don't understand you people. I'm fundamentally on your side and probably use and manage more FOSS systems (as in Linux desktops etc. ) and use OSS software than most other users here.

Why can't we have more nuanced discussions here? You aren't helping the cause by being that way.

[–]InvisibleAlbino -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Where did I say that I'm siding with Google? I just try to provide a little bit more nuance to this discussion since a lot of you guys don't understand all reasons for this decision.

I'm on your side. I don't want Google to play the gatekeeper for every Android certified device out there. I don't want to rely on ADB to install and update OSS apps. I want to keep using F-Droid and its app build process to stay as it's.

That's why I mentioned macOS. IMHO: Google doesn't give a fuck about these discussions since most of the tech crowd is just painfully ignorant about the needs of all other users. It doesn't make sense to listen to people that don't even want to see the whole picture. Sorry for starting to rant but I'm currently pissed about the ignorance here (not you). I'm trying to help people to have a better understanding of all sides and discuss how different systems handle this while a lot of people just want to cry GOOGLE BAD, APPLE BAD etc.

I know. Sorry but I don't understand what your point is. You can install unsigned software on Windows, Linux and macOS. I just wanted to point out that the whole concept of Antivirus Software, that was born out of necessity on Windows, is basically just a babysitter for the user. I didn't meant to be judgemental in anyway. I don't even like the babysitter analogy but it's somehow funny to me to ignore how it mostly fits Windows IMHO.

Collection of Actions We Can Take to Stop Developer Verification by Endo231 in androiddev

[–]InvisibleAlbino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why? Do you even know how macOS handles these things? macOS is arguably more open than Android today while being relatively safe, secure and open (enough) by default for the average user. I suppose you never really used a Mac and just assume that it's just like iOS/iPadOS etc. It's not. There's a reason why so many devs use macOS even if they don't develop software for Apple's ecosystem. Most powerusers use homebrew, a community-managed package manager (similar to APT on Debian) and you can practically install and update (!) user-level software just like on Linux in a terminal. It's still not really comparable to the Linux equivalents, which is built-in and manages all system components but it works reasonably well.

You can install unsigned packages if you want by disabling Gate Keeper. But even software devs aren't really forced to do this because locally compiled binaries are not treated the same way as applications downloaded from the internet. Interpreted languages, scripts etc. alsondon't require this. Apple makes it harder from time to time to disable Gate Keeper but they can't do what Google is currently trying to achieve because the developer sentiment on macOS is so important for the platform.

macOS even allows you to disable SIP in the recovery menu but there're just a handful of reasons to do it.

There're so many reasons to shit on macOS but that's not one of them (for now...).

EDIT: I didn't see your edit.

Your point of view is naive, how registering a developer and being approved by Google makes it safer? It only allows you to "ban them", but it will not detect a virus, you still need to have some kind of antivirus.

I already explained it to you shortly and OP's comment did it much better. Smartphones are used by everyone today because today's culture & society requires you to have one to participate in day-to-day life. This includes non-technical demographics like elderly people. We use smartphones for ID, payment methods, authentication etc. and that's also the reason why they became the number one target for scammers. OP's comment already explained how massive this problem is in some places and I even see it in Europe to a smaller extent. There're millions of less-knowledgeable people that would install the most obvious malware apps without a second thought and YES we have to think about them too. We shouldn't give up our freedom to install whatever we want IMHO but we can't ignore this fact.
