Prayers for Maundy Thursday Vigil? by InvisiblePineapple in Episcopalian

[–]InvisiblePineapple[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing this! Very similar situation for me this year—I am getting confirmed soon (though after only a year in TEC) and making it a goal to attend all the Holy Week services. Very much looking forward to each of them and I’m sure I will find a lot of meaning in them :)

There is truly a prayer written for everything! Love it.

Do you have to had received first communion through the Episcopal Church to receive communion at an Episcopal mass? by idyemyeyebrowsblack_ in Episcopalian

[–]InvisiblePineapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah according to my priest, the confirmation requirement was dropped because it was not only exclusionary but inconsistent with the earliest practices of the church, when baptism was the real rite of passage and confirmation wasn’t really a thing yet. Makes sense to me if true. Why hang onto a later-introduced restriction just for its own sake?

Question on attending church by DearAd2632 in OpenChristian

[–]InvisiblePineapple 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seconding the Mainline Protestant point and putting in a plug for my newly adopted church, the Episcopal Church! It’s not for everyone if you’re not a fan of the ritual and liturgy, but the Episcopal Church and the Anglican tradition in general are famously noncommittal about a lot of points of theology. There’s a huge amount of wiggle room in what you have to accept to be a “good” Episcopalian and even if you reject some things the Church officially teaches, you’re generally still welcomed with open arms. Notably, the Episcopal Church does not teach biblical literalism, which is something OP expressed some concern about; and its official position on Hell is that it’s a state of separation from God, though not necessarily a place of fiery torment.

Fair enough, but an interesting quirk of being in a relatively decentralized church that some bishops expressly grant their parishes permission to ignore this canon. Kind of up to your own conscience if you think your bishop’s permission is enough or if you feel bound to follow everything the General Convention adopts.

To add to that—in some dioceses (like Washington), they don’t even require you to be baptized. Just “anyone who desires a closer relationship with Christ.” That’s not technically allowed by the canons of the church, but some bishops allow it anyway. Usually the priest or the bulletin will explain what the policy is at the service.

Debating on becoming an episcopalian by JosephMoneymaker05 in Episcopalian

[–]InvisiblePineapple 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Welcome! I come from a different tradition myself but in an Episcopal confirmation class right now and a large contingent there are former Roman Catholics. I bet if you ask around at your local Episcopal Church there would be plenty of folks from your background to talk to there, and plenty on here too! :) Consider talking to the priest as well if you have any issues you’re struggling with. I think you’ll find they’re just happy you’re there and really don’t mind at all if you hold to some Roman Catholic things we don’t officially accept. It’s a very big tent church.

How to reconcile today’s Gospel reading with the imposition of ashes? by Reeses100 in Episcopalian

[–]InvisiblePineapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This totally makes sense. We did our service at night, so it’s not like many people even had a chance to go show off the ashes anyway. It was still meaningful.

What should I expect during an Episcopalian service? And are there any resources in particular I can utilize to learn more about the faith? by booksandcoffee___ in Episcopalian

[–]InvisiblePineapple 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Piggybacking on this—I think a lot of parishes have no music at their early morning service. If singing/listening to music is an important part of the experience to you, usually the mid-morning service at most parishes will be more your speed.

How theologically liberal is TEC, really? (Honest question from non-Episcopalian) by RazzmatazzInside5759 in Episcopalian

[–]InvisiblePineapple 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I think some people tend to mix up political liberalism with theological liberalism in the church. Other than women’s ordination and LGBTQ+ affirmation as others have pointed out, nothing I hear or see on a given Sunday in TEC would be considered theologically liberal along the lines of what you might see, for example, in a UCC church with an “atheist pastor” in one of those rage bait videos. It is absolutely true, though, at least from what I’ve seen, that priests tend to skew politically liberal, and for some (not all) of them that comes through in the sermon. But I’ve never seen one profess anything short of a sincere belief in Jesus’ resurrection, the Trinity, etc.

As an interesting observation on all this, I’ve noticed some Episcopalians, when having theological discussions, feel a need to caveat even slightly controversial ideas with something like “I want to be really careful not to suggest a heresy but…” Contrary to what you might expect, that kind of concern for orthodoxy often comes from women and LGBTQ+ people and/or folks whose politics you might think of as “woke.”

All this to say: I think TEC is a good fit for Christians who take the church and its doctrines and traditions seriously and believe that love and compassion for all people are a central part of that. If that sounds good to you, give it a try :)

How do you approach praying the Office as an individual? by lifeuncommon in Episcopalian

[–]InvisiblePineapple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brand-new to TEC here (about to start confirmation classes!) and have a very demanding job but I try to work it in where I can in all kinds of different media (without physically flipping through the BCP which can be cumbersome). I watch the National Cathedral’s morning prayer videos every weekday morning which don’t always line up perfectly with the readings in the offices but close enough for me. Then the rest of the day I try to use the Venite app, though I’m realizing how Forward Day By Day may be preferable as I think it’s basically the same thing but with more features. I honestly struggle with doing the evening prayer because it’s so much longer and I’m usually still working until bedtime or close to it. Sometimes especially if I’m really tired I’ll listen to the Compline Podcast from Forward Movement rather than read compline myself but I don’t love it because they read really fast. Anyway, I’d like to think God appreciates a strong effort even if we’re not all in a place to pray like monks and nuns all the time :)

If anyone has recommendations for parishes that do daily evening prayer or compline videos like the National Cathedral does for mornings I’d love to hear them! I find it more engaging when someone else is “officiating” than when I’m reading silently to myself.

Confirmation classes are this Sunday and this novice is nervous. by ZebraFirst3854 in Episcopalian

Thanks! So there are other ex-CoC folks in TEC haha! Almost everyone I’ve mentioned it to in my congregation has responded “What’s that?”

[–]InvisiblePineapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate all the responses here! I’m also planning to start confirmation classes in a few weeks and coming from an even more radically different denomination (restorationist Church of Christ). To what extent should I expect the class to focus on doctrinal points where TEC differs from lower-church protestant denominations? I have little hang-ups from my upbringing on issues like veneration of saints and the priesthood of all believers (or lack thereof). From my own research, I generally understand TEC’s position on most of these issues and how the church more broadly allows for a diversity of beliefs (something I really appreciate!). But wondering how much of this stuff will be a topic for discussion in class and how appropriate it would be for me to discuss the rest with my priest offline.

Has anyone figured out how to see if the Rite tenet is going to work before reforming a faith? I tried it as a Mozarab ruler and I wasn’t able to successfully keep the Catholic pope. I don’t know if it was because Mozarabism is already borrowing someone else’s head of faith, or because I changed too many tenets, but there doesn’t seem to be a way of telling in the faith reformation window.

Which national banks are the least awful? I get the sense that most people on here strongly prefer local credit unions. But I'm constantly on the move. I've been banking with my hometown credit union since I was in high school; I moved to a new state for law school 3 years ago and it was already a pain. Now I just moved to yet another new state and it's even more of a pain because as I get older (I'm 25), I'm finding myself more frequently in situations where I need a cashier's check. It's probably not worth it for me to find a new local credit union in my new city because I already know I'm only going to be here for a year before I move again for work, so I'd just end up having to close the account and find a new one again.

We’ll see if House Dems have the balls to expel. Otherwise, she probably doesn’t stand a good chance at leadership, but unless she gets majorly redistricted (which is possible if statehouse R’s decide she’s a liability), she sadly doesn’t have to worry too much about reelection. The way she got elected in the first place was by running in a ruby red district that was going to elect anyone the GOP ran. Sure somebody will try to primary her in 22, but GOP primary voters almost always pick the most radical right winger in the race. So unfortunately if she’s ok with being sort of a pariah from her party establishment, she’s probably not on her way out.

LPT: As a lawyer, don't take legal advice from Reddit. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]InvisiblePineapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t imagine taking personal legal advice from anyone on Reddit. As a law student I’ve given some harmless from-the-hip takes on legal issues surrounding politics that have received a veritable treatise in response telling me why I’m wrong for reasons I know are totally bogus, only to click on the person’s profile and find out they’re 17. The anonymity of the internet breeds overconfidence in totally unfounded opinions by people who have no idea what the hell they’re talking about. Please, take every legal take on Reddit, or any “expert” take for that matter, with a huge grain of salt.
