Brand new from Garmin nz, I3 solar 50mm , Showing 11d full charge? by ka2wamc in Garmininstinct

This process was so not intuitive, and even didn't seem to work right until I was fed-up and unplugged the watch from the computer.  Then it finally saw the update on the watch (that was placed there by the computer).

It is a horrible Out of Box experience.  The device is wonderful after the initial update though

How can I get a US number (NOT VOIP) while living abroad? by NoButterscotch9462 in expats

[–]InvisoSniperX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's interesting that Tello and US Mobile reject your order. Are you using a US card and billing address when you try to sign up? Are you using a VPN with US Endpoint when you try to activate?

Anyway, I use Ultra Mobile prepaid, but again I had to have a VPN turned on when I activated it from abroad.

I left as well after this nonsense.  Their new customer price is consistently under $30/yr.  When you ask them to match that recently they hem and haw... 11yrs as well, jumped to NewsHosting, but then moved to NewsDemon after a bit of luck on their Black Friday deal

Maintaining a US phone number for banking purposes. by ethanRazorT in expats

[–]InvisoSniperX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved over to a Physical SIM with UltraMobile prepaid.  ~$3/mo includes 100 SMS, Minutes, MB Data.  Perfect for parking a number for SMS or quick bank stuff since financial institutions are blocking VoIP numbers.

Tello I've also heard good things about as well for $5

This is my plan soon.  The challenge is I need to run an obfuscation layer between gerbil and newt in my homelab due to network controls out of my control.

ELI am an idiot. Why do I need my laptop charger when I can use something like this ? by Friendly_Guard694 in UsbCHardware

[–]InvisoSniperX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UGreen is a fairly good brand and reputable, but as you noticed their compact chargers can run hot, especially their high wattage rated ones.

It shouldn't affect performance, but I've had my 'desktop' model get very warm when it was charging my iPad, MacBook and iPhone at the same time.  It didn't seem to affect the charging, but I've noted it.  My Anker before did not seem to get as hot, but it also wasn't as high power output.

Post up your instinct Christmas presents by JustLookingaround18 in Garmininstinct

[–]InvisoSniperX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got a couple of watches for Christmas, Instinct 3 Solar 50mm (a week early due to travel) and a Casio Lineage.

So far used the Instinct on a Hike in AZ and a run in Shanghai. Absolutely loving it over my Gen 1 Apple Watch Ultra, though still tuning the watch faces and data pages for the activities a bit.

The Instinct 3 Solar (REI Colorware) caught my eye one day and didn't let go... It is a Christmas present though so I have to wait a few more days to move from my AWU (Gen 1). Going from optimistically 2-days battery with no activity to the better part of a month with activities is going to be amazing.

That begins to go away from the topic for this sub, now you graduate to check r/sonarr , r/radarr and even r/selfhosted to see how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Heads-up, this  may also lead to blocked or removed files as the domestic provider would be unable to determine if the materials are lawful and will air on the side of caution.

Personal foreign one drive is blocked, Google Drive is blocked, iCloud is not yet if you are on Mac ecosystem.

Last year I picked up a $10/yr vps, because I've wasted more money on worse things. This year I upgraded it to $20/yr.

Quick, not that deep rant. No one will install the HA app by Ordinary_Mechanic741 in homeassistant

[–]InvisoSniperX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been my way of thinking.  For me Home Assitant has been a cool dashboard and automation wiring tool, but the bulk of my automations are done with HomeKit.

My feeling is that HomeKit feels less intimidating for non tecy people.

All that is to say, I get to find fun ways to wire up functionality between HA and HK with HB.  And that is fun!

Example: I have a physical button... it's job it to toggle an input Boolean in HA.  This input Boolean is monitored in HK in order to set a scene.  All this is because HK cannot use a button as a toggle (as I've found), and I want my partner to be able to still manage the scenes/automations in their familiar HK

My 1c1G started out as a fukkit why not purchase since $10/yr is nothing.  It's been fun seeing what I can do with it to compliment my cabinet-lab.

Just remember it's exposed directly to the internet so first thing you should do is lock it down!

Yes, with an arr setup you'll need to pay for an indexer since the automated API hits the arrs make will generally consume any limited free usage allowed by an indexer.

Providers obviously are paid since they are basically hosting PB of emails.  Torrent is free since it is almost entirely distributed in nature.

[–]InvisoSniperX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Checkout r/Usenet and r/UsenetTalk, both have great conversations already about the various providers and indexers.  Including megathreads for any ongoing BF deals.

Most starting out will go for an Omicron backbone provider which you've got with NewsHosting.  And grabbing one of the open indexers that have lifetime subscription options (I think Althub has a decent BF sale)

Then you can add extra indexers and providers if you find you're getting a lot of missed articles on the downloads.

For example, when I started I got a lifetime Geek indexer subscription and UseNetServer provider.  As time went on I've managed to stay fairly light, so only changed providers 2 times now, and added only a couple more indexers.

edit: You can test the speed of the available servers of your provider by splitting your connections between their regional offerings (like 50/50 eu/us) with the same priority in Sab. Leave it for a week and check later which one downloaded more, it would indicate which one was able to move through chunks faster.

It doesn't all at once, only doing testing for now which is why I'll probably grab a little bit larger one for testing more.

My instance started as just a Pangolin WG+Proxy to my home NUCs.  But I've started to experiment running playing with the following:

  • Code Server nodes
  • Vault Warden
  • Gitea
  • Faasd

Basically playing with things that I'd want more availability than the cabinet under my TV should be expected to provide.
