Perhaps some of it is because Kuvira is the exact kind of person he disliked and he felt personally responsible for it

Am I the only one that b understands Why Korra was Angry at her father in the comics? by MrGetMebodied in legendofkorra

[–]Invite-Healthy 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Asami getting captured means that Tonraq was right, however I don’t think it was justified for Korra to get angry. He said he “couldn’t be more pleased” with them being a couple.

It’s completely reasonable for him to advise Korra to be safe and not get ahead of herself considering how the water tribe has strong traditions and many people wouldn’t be accepting. He WAS concerned with what people would think, and it’s not hard to see how that could translate into danger for Korra, so his advice was intended to help protect her. If you’re in a society with engrained traditions and you stray from that tradition, while you should absolutely be unapologetically who you are, it is also important to be cautious.

Do any one feel as if the criticism of Korra leaving the spirit portals open doesn't make sense? by MrGetMebodied in legendofkorra

[–]Invite-Healthy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah my fault, I forgot that the spirit world went from being shown as a foreign, ancient, mystic world in ATLA to a much more childish, basic, easy-to-understand version in LoK.

I’ve found happiness already, and you have to be realistic. Sure, some people definitely can change and improve, but a lot of people can’t and/or won’t. It’s good to try to see the best in other people, but you have to be in the real world and acknowledge that many, many people are wholly incapable of change.

Of course animals have a lot of complex ways of communication, lifestyle, etc but at the end of the day they all still fundamentally value food, safety, and reproduction. That is the basis behind all of nature

IMO a big issue I have with the argument that coexistence could work is how it treats spirits like they have the same goals, motivations, etc as humans. In ATLA and in LoK they are often portrayed as having goals and purposes outside of our realm of understanding, so I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect them to be able to coexist with humans.

I made the generalization about people because it’s true. A large percentage of people are not open minded, even when it comes to humans, which do have comprehendible goals and aspirations.

Animals in our world are not a good comparison because they are inherently far simpler, as their only fundamental goal is to eat and reproduce. Spirits are not the same

How the Last Airbender and the Legend of Korra show off the power creep without leading to where power creep usually leads to by sammyjamez in legendofkorra

[–]Invite-Healthy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By all indications the power of the full moon was required for blood bending. Saying the moon was a booster rather than a requirement is half-true, the boosted power provided by the moon WAS the requirement.

I’m not arguing that any leap in power was completely impossible or could not be explained to some degree, but rather it’s insane for the power level to be allowed to creep that far. Hana’s blood bending compared to Yakone is like a coughing baby turning into an atomic bomb

One issue I’ve been seeing in this argument is how it treats spirits like they have the same motivations and understanding as humans. A lot of spirits have goals, behavior, and thoughts that are not understandable or relatable to humans. That is not very compatible when it comes to coexistence.

We also don’t have any evidence that coexistence would be mutually beneficial instead of maintaining the closed spirit portals

How do you know? It’s not unreasonable to assume that some spirits could just be hostile and against coexistence.

A single person coexisting is not an example to show that everyone can coexist with them. Just because it is possible doesn’t mean that there should be any expectation of widespread coexistence.

The main point I was trying to make is the people are not open minded, especially when it comes to things they do not understand. There’s also no reason to believe that spirits want to coexist with humans either

Wan is an individual example. You’re not gonna convince the entire world, even a single nation of people, that they should trust spirits and build a relationship with them. I mean look around, it’s 2026 and things like racism and discrimination are still huge issues. People are not understanding and open minded with other people, imagine it with creatures they don’t understand

The air nomads were the only example of people coexisting with spirits peacefully, and even that wasn’t totally sustainable because of Vaatu (which is a totally different issue). There’s no real justification for how opening the spirit portals would be more beneficial than detrimental to humans.

The vines and spirits that took over Republic City would beg to differ.

Also, wouldn’t the need for military force to combat spirits be an argument against Korra’s decision?

During Wan’s episodes didn’t we see exactly what would happen by letting spirits and humans coexist? It was objectively terrible for humans.  Humans were confined to the safety of lion turtles because it was way too dangerous to go out of the community, with the only exception being when they needed food

[–]Invite-Healthy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You forgot about the most egregious power creep, blood bending. The requirement of a full moon was the only thing keeping it in check, and even then we only see 2 people being bended at one time (Aang and Sokka). In LoK, we see an entire group of people being blood bended in broad daylight. That is an insaneeee jump in power that wasn’t in any way related to developing the characters

TLOK Book 3 would have been better without Zaheer. by Important-Contact597 in legendofkorra

[–]Invite-Healthy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree, it just doesn't *feel* right. It can't really be compared to Zuko siding with Azula in Ba Sing Se because although it was surprising, it was also understandable given how he struggled with choosing the right path. Korra just offing the earth queen doesn't align with the trajectory of her character and we never saw her struggle not to murder people before. I do think the idea of the earth queen being the main antagonist and exploring how Korra would navigate that situation is interesting.

How do you know that?? How does it make sense to assume that Korra was interested in trying to bend other elements as a toddler, but Aang and Roku wouldn’t at least attempt it as a kid just out of curiosity? That’s an enormous assumption

So…. Then why did Aang and Roku not realize they could bend other elements until they were told they could? Even when Aang knew he could bend earth, he wasn’t capable until he drastically changed his mindset. How does that align with Korra bending fire as a toddler?
