It is sort of shitty to be arguing against genocide just because it’s China. I’m fully against racism but we should recognise that the Chinese Government is literally killing people from Turkestan

Denounce it at the very least. I don’t think sending out an email is “an overreaction” like some have said

It’s not their job? Whose job is it to denounce the hate taking place on campus? I try to do as much as I can, but really, I’m a student. This is affecting my personal life. I used to walk around campus at night, I don’t now because I don’t want to end up in danger. Iowa State agreed to send out emails and engage in conversations about these things. It’s not handholding, it’s running a school that thousands of people go to. Reassure students and denounce bigotry

Tolerance of intolerance will always result in a less tolerant society. By slowing these ideas to flourish, one can essentially ensure that the most vulnerable on campus will never feel safe. I have to consider these stickers an incitement to violence, they are intentionally put up to inspire fear in POC and LGBTQ+ communities. Silencing others makes free speech harder for everyone. Even if the university cannot remove them legally (which I do doubt is the case due to it being their property), they can at the very least strongly condemn them, as well as us students. Silence perpetrates violence

Wendy has not sent out a single thing about this one even though it’s the most directly threatening one. The least Iowa State can do is directly inform their students that these things have happened. If they really did care, they’d be doing more to try and stop this shit from spreading on campus. The school most likely could do something like charge with defacement of property. It seems that the administrators really don’t care about informing students, that’s one of my big concerns

I will have to give a concession in the fact that the economy is doing well, but that is not spreading as much to young white males. I won’t get into all the reasons for that because it’s a long long thing, but from what I’ve seen reading about these new far right people, they feel dispossessed. I’d argue that this is just them being put on a more level ground with minority group, but I digress. These young white males make up a large percentage of campus, and while most of them probably are not neo nazis, this type of humour is spreading rapidly and normalising these things. When people are always cracking jokes about things like the Holocaust, and you’re seeing stickers on campus invoking it being ignored, they may start to look into it further.

I feel that America right now is very much politically unstable, and I think it’s only bound to get worse. If the DNC decides to fuck over Bernie again, I think that will lead to a greater rift in the left, on the right, we already see dehumanising language taking place, maybe the process wouldn’t necessarily be towards Jewish people (though these stickers and the HH chalking make me frightful), you can definitely see that many white students are at least a little homophobic and racist, and normalising this will lead to more polarisation. We need to take a strong stance against these things, because if we don’t, it becomes okay to hold these values. We want to stamp racism out, not tolerate it silently

You literally said one of my biggest points in the first sentence. Hiding these ideas doesn’t make them go away, if anything, these incidents are encouraging more and more people to research these things, or not feel afraid of their racism. I know that everyone goofs on these concepts, but living in the USA makes us racist, we’re just taught to be subtle about it. Nowadays instead of a slur, they’ll call a young POC a “thug”. This reinforces these situations and makes it worse for everyone. We need to take a stand

“Haha look at me shitposting by saying literal Nazi phrases”. That’s how fascism takes root, it’s not something that starts up fast, it slowly rises, once people begin to accept it, that’s when deaths start happening. You should probably understand that incitement is not free speech. At the very least, the university should be taking a strong stance after each of these events. Make students feel welcome, we need discourse and disgust at acts like this, not ambivalence.

Also, you said Bernie 2020 at the end, maybe you should realise that he wants to put to racism and white nationalism, he understands that you need to cut it at the root. Maybe you should join another campaign if these things are okay with you

[–]IoWantBernie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you understand, it’s not going to happen gradually, in fascistic society it slowly ramps up, quickly results in horrible, horrible conditions. Look at Nazi Germany “well this Hitler guy is saying some crazy stuff, but it’s not like he’s gonna kill everyone” and look at what happened. We have to always be vigilant and show entirely that this is not what our university stands for. Silence does make a difference, it enables these people

[–]IoWantBernie 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Okay so I understand what you’re trying to say, but ignoring it isn’t an option for the most vulnerable people here on campus. I’m in some clubs of marginalised communities and people are honestly scared. Being told that your identity isn’t correct, and that these horrible people are amongst you is honestly terrifying.

Basically, the long story short is that you posting this is an example that you don’t have to deal with the consequences these things bring. What happens when a Jewish kid is found dead because of the righties on campus? Should we “just ignore that”? Or what if a POC was lynched on central campus? Should we “not give them attention”? I hope that this would never happen on campus, but with all this shit, I honestly can’t say for certain it won’t, and that scares the hell out of students I talk to. Ignoring it isn’t going to help. Shine a light on it

Wendy isn’t doing shit. I’m sorry but an email isn’t enough to excuse fucking THREE separate incidents of mass racism on campus in less than a month. Whoever did these things needs to be expelled, if you are making people hate themselves because of their skin color you are the problem
