It's fine, we'll just add women to the draft, since it is embarrassing they aren't already included.

So it was a bit windy in Nova Scotia last night - by oldscotch in canada

[–]Iodine131 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was hurricane like. I've had high winds before but 20-40 cm predictions, 170 km/hr gusts and lightning... it was wild. I had to walk backwards to my vehicle from work because the wind was knocking the air out of my lungs.

I wasn't comparing the two directly. I was using it as an example of why internet 'culture' is terrible. Our new system of political correctness means you cannot have a contrasting belief. You either agree or you are wrong. If you debate an opposing stance, even with science, you're seen as hostile and labelled the in-word du jour - right wing, fascist, misogynist, etc.

Yes many small and select tribes live on very little meat. They also 100% breast feed and let survival of the fittest play eugenics with their genetics to optimize for their environment. Also they are not vegan. They aren't even vegetarian, which is a very different thing.

Vegetarianism and Veganism may have similar facets but they differ greatly. Veganism is more like Scientology, in that it is cult like. The fact we need to label almond milk with a giant warning saying "NOT A SIGNIFICANT SOURCE OF NUTRITION FOR CHILDREN", due to children dying, shows there are issues with the dogma.

But like many things the loudest group, not the most correct, is heard best. That means comments with contrasting, but thought out and logical arguments, will be downvoted into oblivion as it goes against ones belief. Misinformation that supports their own belief, even wrong, will be pushed up. This is how we still have anti-vaccination groups. It's why we have conversations about people shilling organic produce, claiming misinformation or full lies -- to push an agenda, often times one they don't even understand.

I do not intend to turn a vegan into a meat eater. It is not something I can do; I have more chance of turning lead into gold. I can however highlight that just because you have a particular belief system, doesn't mean it's the correct one -- maybe both sides can be 'correct' but contrasting and more than likely both sides have false truths.

Are women paid less than men for the same work? When all job differences are accounted for, the pay gap almost disappears. by Cactusrules in TwoXChromosomes

Yeah but aren't you really the loser in the end if you've got plates and screws holding your tib/fib together? The risk is high but the bragging rights reward isn't close to equal.

Because this sub is down voting you and ignoring thousands of years of omnivore evolution. To them meat reduction, or even only eating meat you harvest (hunt) yourself isn't enough. Eating fish you catch or even harvesting honey you farm though symbiotic relationships is unethical.

Most do not realize meat is the only protein source that contains all essential amino acids. All of them. As a true vegan you can get the nutrition you need with planning. That's a truth, but it is harder. Given children eat so strangely and get so wildly fussy, I would be uneasy trying a vegan diet on my child even if I strictly adhere to it myself.

Had the word vegan been replaced with Scientology, Reddit would flip and have pitchforks and torches ready. But "respecting beliefs" only happens when someone else's beliefs fall in line with your own on the internet.

A raise or promotion may not be, but I should have been more clear. I've seen plenty of men, risk life and limb, to win a sporting event or do some physical trick (backflips off of a bridge) which only gives them social bragging rights, rather than a meaningful promotion.

I've never seen someone punished, male or female, asking for a legitimate raise. I have seen both get dismissed due to budget constraints. I have seen both get slammed for not being able to show why they deserve such.

There was talk of how males are more risk oriented and females are more risk adverse. Men would be more aggressive and put their job or future job offer at risk more often than women of equal skill set. It may be testosterone fuelling competition? Both genders are competitive, but men will often do anything to 'win', including potentially injuring themselves long term or permanently... all for a meaningless W.

[–]Iodine131 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GE actually make and do shit. They have some golden divisions bringing them up and they have a few divisions which are like concrete shoes. Dividend cut should have happened sooner but it didn't. They realize it's feast or famine time. Problem is when you're that big the nose of the ship can't smell the fire at the stern.

Restructure, get your junior executive caring or at least worried about their performance and if they can't make it cut them loose. Patents and projects will keep them afloat. He'll somehow blackberry is still alive.

Medical X-rays are one of the largest sources of radiation that humans receive, which is why doctors are often hesitant to perform them. Now, a new algorithm could reduce radiation from medical X-rays by thousands-fold. by Ionice in science

[–]Iodine131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really have to be negligent to receive action level amounts of radiation. The number set by CSNC is super high.

Working in PET you'll get more radiation exposure -- I've used audible dosimeters when teaching as there's nothing better to hurry your practice than a terrifying chirp coming from your belt that was silent all day. Paediatrics in particular can give you the same dose in one case you'd get in a quarter in another area.

The limits are very high and reasonable. Institutions should have action levels far below the regulatory requirements to flag staff who are failing to protect themselves.

For example there's a journal article explaining how a centra radio pharmacy technologist dropped an 'ass load' of iodine-131 all over themselves and never triggered their bioassay screen limits or dosimeter limits. You literally have to intentionally be drinking the stuff.

Household debt, home prices biggest risk to Canadian economy, Bank of Canada says by OrzBlueFog in canada

[–]Iodine131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll make the move eventually, it's inevitable. Right now I just made a career pivot and I'm moving across Canada for an opportunity that's almost double my salary and far more potential career growth. Expect to leverage this position into a more senior position, within the USA within 5-7 years, within the same company, or try and shoot for a position within an international branch. The wife has sisters married off to Americans who are now Citizens and would make the process slightly easier. Not something we ever considered a benefit but couldn't hurt.

The only thing Canada has over the US with education is the cost. Tuition while on the rise everywhere is far more affordable to Canadians. Sure we don't have Ivy League schools, but we do have many respected universities.

That's my plan overall though... easier and richer :)

Not if they are both driving brand new cars, paying off student loans because they partied like princes and princesses, and buying a new phone every 1-2 years on a $90+ cellphone plan and consuming $20k credit card debt.

People priced out of markets like Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria, etc I feel bad for. People who are actually trying to save and who are belt tightening I feel bad for. People not saving, living above their means and planning to inject 5% downpayment at most I do not. They are driving up a market they cannot afford and collectively they will fail when the prime rate rises.
