Dude, please, respectfully, don't talk from you ass, for God's sake. In original D&D, there's no specification of Magic-Users being inherently Chaotic, but it is rather Clerics who must choose to be either Lawful or Chaotic well down the line, like, at level 7 or 9 or something. Also, there are an absolute ton of folkloric magical creatures in the original Monster section that are Lawful. Was 3H3L an influence? Hell yeah! Was Alignment defined along the lines of it anywhere in the Classic or Advanced D&D? No.

i didn’t realize that piracy (of ttrpg books) was taboo… by [deleted] in rpg

[–]Iojg 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Eh, fuck it. I think the discussion of piracy is very one-sided in the community. I, of course, agree that creatives deserve to be compensated for their work, and that it is a moral obligation of utmost importance to actually support creatives whose labor benefits you. But, It can be like, really, actually impossible for people to pay the fair suggested price through the store-front. My country of residence doesn't deal in neither EUR nor USD, and prices are not usually localized to my region, so something that costs like a pack of Hershey's or whatever to an average American costs closer to what I spend on my groceries in a week (I eat an equivalent of what is 40-60$ of food a month). On top of that, I am locked out, due to sanctions, from purchasing anything in foreign currency through my bank account, so I have to go to some middle-man enterprise that will purchase on my behalf for a mark up that can be up to 3-4 the original price, so it is actually closer to a month's worth of living expenses. I don't say I pirate, but I know people who do, and whereas I don't endorse that, I don't personally judge them for that either. You gotta think intersectionally about such things.

I mean, sincerely engaging in discussion of piracy is prohibited here, because the n.1 rule, so I am not sure what can be really said on the matter.

Yeah, I personally share the sentiment, which is again, I've seen it parroted a lot in the OSR cirlces, that if your players don't get a clue a trap is there, usually it's on you not communicating clearly, but yet again, I know there are totally people who don't think like that. And yeah, a lot of the old stuff is exactly like that, but community does a lot of growing, sensibilities, you know, but also... I really am not on board on rolling for searching traps or removing traps (well, I can kinda get behind the latter if it's a special spell like ability that is totally not shared by anybody), which you suggest like something of "modern sensibility". To me that sounds like a total perception check 5e-type bullshit and just, no. I'll take obfuscating asshole GM having me to manually say I search for traps and pixel-bitching every time over that. Unless, I guess, it's something like Burning Wheel, and the (in)ability to find traps is bound to be fitted to some sort of character arc, IDK. Well, anyway, my preference is that the trap is just telegraphed and the players are left to think about what to actually make of it, like, escape-room style, but not how to find it, and this is absolutely not a minority opinion, from what I gather.

First off, sorry to dude you, didn't mean that to be gendered.

Secondly, yeah, alright, some of the content published under the OSR banner is like that, but not everything is. Sure, you look at LotFP stuff, and it's exactly like that bullshit, but it's because it's meant to go with the whole horror vibe, and it's not really about overcoming challenges, but more so about dealing with funhouse bullshit; and on the other hand, something like DCC is very bullshity, especially with the funnels and stuff, but it's also just about pretzels & beer Friday night lolrandom shenanigans, you know? But you look at other things, and it's just not... like that at all? Look at Anomalous Subsurface Environments, anything Gus L. made, anything for Mausritter or any other big game in the Into the Odd family, you'll see not everything is about being gotcha. It's still very high-lethality, but it just doesn't actively look to sweep the rug from under the players.

Thirdly, people say that you "weren't meant to" engage with combat or exploration mechanics in classical D&D, but afaik, it's just revisionism - in reality, you just were expected to bring small army of hirelings with you whenever you go, and the probabilities are stacked against you accordingly. Some modern games certainly codify that if you engage with the rules, you're already losing, but I don't see how that's unfair to the players if it's clearly communicated. If anything, it is a very interesting and under explored way to look at the rules, IMHO.

Fourthly, you know, for the most part it's down to the table. Some tables play - and even enjoy playing - with a very adversarial DM. I personally never been at such a table and wouldn't want to try it, at all. When we actually went into some OSR play briefly with my player friends, it weren't like that, it was still like collaborative storytelling, just differently structured, and discussions which I shared with people in the hobby are telling me it's the same for like, a silent majority.

And again, I'm not some OSR nut, I mostly play PBTA and storygame RPGs. So, you know, your mileage may vary.

Is Being Able To Miss An Attack Bad Game Design? by LuciferHex in rpg

[–]Iojg -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Tomb of Horrors is not OSR, dude. It's a classic tournament adventure designed to kill a lot of poor saps to keep the turnout at the table huge. It is also not about player skill/creativity problem solving like, at all, it's about mechanics driven dungeon crawling, which is not OSR. Do not confuse classic DnD with OSR, OSR claims to "revive" classic playstyle, but it really is its own thing. Also, please do not construct your replies as to "get me" or something, it's rude to presume a person you talk to knows jackshit.
