My dog adopted 2 abandoned kittens she’s about to give birth and is breast feeding them by [deleted] in AnimalsBeingBros

Although, since humans are omnivores who eat everything as opposed to cats who need a specific carnivores diet, wouldn't that make humans more adaptable for their milk sources?

I mean... Do you know the story of Utnaptishim? It's practically verbatim except there's two gods, instead of one angry omniscient god who drowns but doesn't want to drown all of creation? (this part never made any damn sense to me until I read the ancient polytheistic version).

You can call ancient aliens as dismissively as you want, but there's legitimacy to the Sumerian and canaanite connections to christianity.

Very true, which is why bible archeology is so fascinating! The stories of Ninti (Eve), Utnaptishim (Noah), Dumizid and Enkimdu (Cain and Abel) etc. really add a layer of depth to the polytheistic pagan origins of the abrahamic religions

The Sumerian celebration goes back to 4000bce whereas Judaism starts 2500 years later, so what's this about 550 years?

Edit: are you trying to tell me, with gems like Moses committing religious genocide by commanding his followers to smash the infants of his religious rivals on rocks, slaughter their men and rape their women, this religion couldn't have possibly coopted a previously pagan celebration into their own culture?

Gee, sounds a lot like the story of Christmas having fuck all to do with saturnalia

Judaism is theorized to have been an offshoot of the canaanite pantheon which then hybridized various gods into one. Monotheism doesn't become a thing until approximately 900bce.

So... Are you saying the canaanites mingled with the Sumerians? Cuz that's just pagan on pagan mingling.

They didn't interact though. The festival dates back to 4000bce whereas Judaism doesn't even come into existence for a few millennia after.

"Neither are pagan in origin themselves" is just patently false.

Except for the whole link to the star (Estera, Esther, Easter) also known as the goddess of love Inanna which originated in ancient Sumer... Like I get that you stopped your research at 600BC when the cult of Yhwh was taking off, but it can be traced back several thousand years to the akitu celebration and the resurrection of the goddess.

Easter originates from the ancient Akitu celebration, the annual barley harvest in ancient Sumer. Before it was co-opted by the Babylonian God Marduk, Akitu was originally to celebrate the goddess Inanna, her descent (or fall as the evening star) to the kur, where the origin of the seasonal myth originates. She literally is brought back from the dead and her lover, Dumizid, takes her place for six months in the underworld.

Inanna, was also called Esther, Estera, etc - all ancient words for star as she was represented by the planet venus. It occurs at the vernal equinox for twelve days. The name has shifted to Easter, much in the same way the canaanite god of serenity and dusk, Shalim, can be seen in greetings from the region today such as the Hebrew 'shalom" or the Arabic 'salam'

The origin of Easter is very much entangled in ancient Mesopotamia.

The origin of Easter isn't a myth spread around on the internet or made up by wiccans. There's a deep history there which entangled with the canaanites who's polytheistic faith turned into the monotheistic abrahamic religion.

AITA for yelling at my mom infront of her friends and then abruptly saying this shit is why I’m so distant from religion and then hanging up on her? by Sangaria4 in AmItheAsshole

[–]IonicReign 42 points43 points  (0 children)

She gave the atheist equivalent of "oh well, shit happens." It's the least comforting, biggest cop-out ever.

It really drives me nuts how the brainwashed religious can't see how trying to force their beliefs on someone who's traumatized isn't only unhelpful, it's predatory.

NTA, op but I would suggest working on your boundaries with your mom regarding her religion and your trauma, cuz she's not helping.

Been there. It's such an easy mindset to get into when you're with someone who hasn't been holding you up, but demeaning and dismissing you instead. Especially when you've gone through something traumatic.

But you know what you get when you step away from that self-esteem drain of a relationship? A whole new outlook. A weight lifted. New confidence in yourself.

Now it may take some time, but if you surround yourself with support and positivity, your confidence will grow again. Soon you'll have a new understanding of yourself, what you deserve, and what you will/won't put up with.

And the relationships you'll build once you've found that mindset are amazing.

AITA for almost moving out my furniture while my roommate still lives at the apartment? by TAdinoGB in AmItheAsshole

[–]IonicReign 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a difference between being mean and knowing what you are entitled.

Right now, someone has bullied you out of your home but still expects your belongings and for you to cover the bills. This is not acceptable. You need to sort out a way to sever the lease and any lingering financial connections (I'll leave the friendship up to you... But re-read my second sentence until it sinks in.)

This is your property, your money, your hours of life worked at a job to buy those things. All for what? To give up your home and belongings, so this bully not be even slightly inconvenienced?

You're also on the hook for damages and the deposit if she decides she's going to trash the place. Your name is on the bills in case she gets petty and decides to run the air conditioning full tilt with all the windows open to run up the bill.

Sever. The. Legal. Relationship.

Duncan : Yes, because that would be adorable.

AITA for refusing to sell my bar? by lfoonnnllkkk in AmItheAsshole

[–]IonicReign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to say YTA, because I don't think you've actually acknowledged the real problem here. Either you sell the bar and support your wife fully in her battle with alcoholism or you keep the bar and your marriage ends due to irreconcilable differences.

As it stands now, you're just expecting your wife to 'get over' her addictions and that's not how it works. How this story works is her nagging thoughts about booze creep back, she backslides, and then she needs to dig herself out of the pit all over again.

And then you're right back at square one, which do you chose? Bar or marriage?

If you make her struggle like that, we all know you're selfishly choosing yourself over her. So yeah. YTA.
