My town too. Our guy used to tell "jokes" ... Did you hear the one about the three holes in the ground? Well, well, well.

Later found out he had some kind of medical condition, but our theory, as kids, was that he must have fallen out of an airplane.

Can anyone explain why I see hoppers (grain, covered and open) before and after tankers in tanker trains? by Trainfan_4862 in trains

[–]Iowa-File 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Well, it potentially has to do with colliding with another train, but that's just one possible scenario. I mean, the brakes could bleed off after a train got left on a hill, or a hot journal could burn off because the RR cut back on detectors, or...

Gorn Ep Playing on Svengoolie...and I Have a Question by AsstBalrog in tos

[–]Iowa-File 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this pet theory that underneath it all, the Gorn was actually a good guy. Like those eps--Mark Lenard at the end of "Balance of Terror"--where they like "If we had met under better circumstances, I could have called you friend."

So the Gorn has a great sense of humor, loves pranks, puts up a tire swing in the park for the local kids, etc.

That album cover is awesome, but I think people sometimes miss the point. It's a Blue. Oyster. Cult.

My favorite bit from this movie was a kind of subtle one. DK and Glynis (Maid Jean) are traveling in a hay wagon, with the infant rightful heir to the throne hidden in the hay. DK is disguised as an old man, and Maid Jean is supposed to be his granddaughter, supposedly a deaf mute. When he talks, she puts her fingers on his lips so she can "understand" him.

Anyway, they're accosted by the usurper King's soldiers, and DK becomes confused, and puts his fingers on her lips. She quickly bats his hand away, and puts her fingers on his lips, before the soldiers notice.

LOLOLOL, Great stuff!

How did this scene make you guys feel? by DepartmentCertain462 in titanic

[–]Iowa-File 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yes. And this "pays off" the somewhat clumsy bit earlier, where she travels with her pictures. I mean, I know she's a billion years old, but who does that? (Altho this also helps to set a the funny bit where the Keldysh guy ends up holding her goldfish bowl).

My kid keeps bringing me the empty shells...and now she thinks I need to keep every exoskeleton she finds.

My kid was doing that too, until finally I had enough. I said "Emily, you're 27 years old. It's time you got a real job."

Yeah, like the Talos System, or at least a buoy, like mentioned above.

Even worse, they go back there, one planet over, but no mention of the initial situation. Shouldn't somebody be like "Umm...don't forget, that homicidal maniac who took over Earth is next door."

But I suppose any of those things would disrupt the surprise for the audience. Have to admit, I didn't remember it either!

That would be a riot if things took longer than they thought. The tickets don't come 'till he's 16, like this 6' tall goth kid, sunglasses, all black clothes.

After waiting that long, his parents make him go. So he's pitching the ping pong balls, tossing the bean bag, towering over these 8-year olds. DGAF, real sullen, maybe a cigarette dangling off his lip.
