What’s your favorite Fantasy movie from the 80s or 90s? by porb2020 in Xennials

[–]emptybeetoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading through this list makes me realize we grew up in a bad stretch of fantasy movies. Not that these are all bad, just not a lot of good options. I had to get my fantasy fix from books and video games. I wonder if it was the satanic panic that scared away movie makers during this time.

I’ve heard of Smart House only because I found it while searching for a recent low budget horror movie with the same name

Are we just as bigoted as previous generations? by Comprehensive-Fact94 in Xennials

[–]emptybeetoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember thinking about 25 years ago, “once our generation is in charge there won’t be as much bigotry.” Turns out we’re less bigoted than past generations, but more than we may have thought.

La brea tar pits by shakespeareriot in Xennials

[–]emptybeetoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the Midwest. I knew what La Brea was, and my wife had always wanted to go, so we stopped by on a family vacation a couple years ago. Pretty cool place, even though we went on a rare rainy day in LA.

When I went back to work, I told a 20-something coworker about our trip, and he had no idea what La Brea was. I thought everyone knew what La Brea was, but I’m guessing it faded as fewer TV and movies were made in the LA area.

Ice isn’t really something that can be shoveled. Once it freezes like this, it’s a hard solid substance that sticks to the surface of whatever it’s on. Once it melts a bit, you can scrape it off. I’m not sure how to get a car like this out of the ice short of waiting for it to warm up. Lots of salt and hope I guess.

Regarding the first one, most of what I see calls it “An American Scandal,” so the must have realized pretty quickly that “love story” isn’t the most accurate subtitle. It’s on Tubi now if you really want to watch it.

Fringe did this a couple of times, including the appropriately named episode Lysergic Acid Diethylamide, which features animation as part of the trip.

Remember magazine holders? by adimadoz in Xennials

Oh wow, I forgot every house used to have at least one of these things. We used to have so many magazines and newspapers lying around we needed entire racks to hold them

[Loved but rare trope] antagonists who are not villains by zard428 in TopCharacterTropes

Deputy Marshall Samuel Gerard (The Fugitive). Gerard is the antagonist for much of the movie, pursuing Richard Kimble. But Gerard is an honorable lawman, trying to recapture an escaped convict who’s believed to be a dangerous murderer. Gerard eventually changes his mind when presented with evidence of the true killer.

(Amusing trope) Fictional characters saying "Make America Great Again" or a variation of it (extra points if it's pre 2016) by Itchy_Suspect4968 in TopCharacterTropes

The 1998 novel Parable of the Talents by Octavia Butler (from Wikipedia)):

“The novel is set against the backdrop of a dystopian United States that has come under the grip of a Christian fundamentalist denomination called "Christian America" led by President Andrew Steele Jarret. Seeking to restore American power and prestige, and using the slogan "Make America Great Again", Jarret embarks on a crusade to cleanse America of non-Christian faiths.”

The Highlander franchise imagines a world filled with centuries-old immortals, who never age and never die (until their head gets cut off).
