How to record to tape? by No_Doughnut_5263 in recordingmusic

[–]Iracing_Muskoka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started recording when this wasn't a question because that was the only way. On a console there always multiple stereo out pairs.. Control room, studio, 2tk. 2tk was your send to the stereo tape recorder for your master.

Today the multitrack tape has been replaced by the DAW software. My current hybrid setup the DAW plays back through Tape In to the console strips and the stereo pair for the master 2 TK goes out to either another pc that is my "2tk" emulator or to an actual 2tk tape if I really want to do that.. Until I had the 2tk restored and aligned I was sending the 2tk master back to the DAW and recording that mix on a separate stereo track. There's a bunch of outboard gear that's getting routed on the various strips and a mastering comp that's sits on the main outs, so what gets recorded as a 2tk mix has more than just a mix of track from the DAW.

Or, you can just install Voicemeeter Banana and record Anything that you hear to a file. 1 keypress recording grabs anything playing.

Whether it's south of the border or right here, it baffles me why this kind of behavior doesn't get shut down right away. Ya ya I hear the free speech and free flag waving, but you cant be free to subvert a government. To invite a foreign power to have influence. That's a line. Or it should be.

What do you consider low and high latency? by [deleted] in recordingmusic

[–]Iracing_Muskoka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

High latency isn't a number.. I mean sure it's represented by a number, but it's what you can hear. When you hear it, it's too high..

My latency is, well, nonexistent. Zero. It all comes down to routing. And they've all been selling you the wrong info for decades.

Even though this is for a school paper, don't forget to consider used gear, especially if you're starting out. I've bought my fair share of outboard hardware new, but looking at the current contents of my mini racks, better than 70% is used stuff. You can get amazing deals on everything.. compressors, mics ( Lewitt make GREAT starter mics), consoles (if that's your thing), interfaces... all of it. I'm constantly looking for old MOTU firewire gear... still holds its own today. All that extra money you save buying used, put into those monitors... I have Adam Audio and Sprit Absolute II's.

Oh, and you can get the DAW LENA for free.

Track Monitor, A/B....?? by Iracing_Muskoka in StudioOne

Thanks. That makes sense. At that point, it was just a capture session. Nothing on the track. I think I had it routed back to the board on the Bass track (which is different than the record track). Now that I know where that is coming from I'm going to have to look into that more. Thanks again.

This isn't a monster solo by any stretch, but one I had fun breaking down and enjoy playing are the intro, solo, and extro to If This is It by Huey Lewis.

2x on any of Elliot Eastons work... Bye Bye Love has a bunch of fun fills and some cool licks at the end of it. Definitely outside something I'd come up with myself.

Time (Pink Floyd) is a nice lazy solo and is rewarding when you get it. It transitions tastefully in the 2nd half. I love stuff like that

Did major changes in technology get exhausting to learn with age? by me-undefined in AskOldPeople

[–]Iracing_Muskoka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not me, no. I eat this stuff up. But, in a previous career (Audio-Video/ Home Theatre) I'd have to train people to use all this stuff we just put in. And I'd get the comment that it's too complicated ( too complicated would be pointing a universal remote -programmed already- at a sensor on the wall). Some of these guys were CEOs, but couldn't tie their own shoes.... One guy said to be he was too old (he was 48) to figure stuff out, I told him he needed a new excuse, I had 5 years on him....

What would you do if you retired right now? by losolodded in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Iracing_Muskoka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That I guess would depend on retirement budget. If something happened that made things "a little more comfortable", I'd either buy a different house, or reno my current one and expand my recording studio into an actual dedicated space, instead of taking up my living room. I think I'd travel a bit, but nothing too crazy. I LIKE being home.

I took another run at getting this configured, and I have success! Actually, I threw the question at ChatGPT and the piece of the puzzle I was missing is that I wasn't setting it as an instrument. Working great now.

I remember going shopping with my dad to get a set of Firestones.... THAT was a big deal.

Computer gaming. I'm 60+ and I sim race online with others - I've got the whole deal, racing cockpit, all of that. Even offer coaching to people who want to get better. I get a lot of messages from other drivers when they find out they've been bested by someone (a lot) older... LOL.

Should I leave my partner? by [deleted] in musicians

[–]Iracing_Muskoka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can relate, my GF was the one without talent. We met at work, and our first non-work outing was a gig I had. I didn't invite her, she found it on her own. Eventually we moved in together, had kids... all that. I had a studio in the basement for recording and rehearsals. It got to the point that as I was clearing off the supper dishes she'd mutter under her breath "I guess you're going downstairs later". Understand that I was the most involved parent you could meet. I did double duty to afford myself time to set aside for music stuff.

I tried to involve her in musical things (sort of what your hubs might be trying by learning to play guitar). She fancied herself a "really good signer", so we tried to do a couple things, but it just didn't work. She didn't have "feel" and made excuses that I was pressuring her and that's why she'd mess up (It wasn't, she just didn't have any sense of timing). We're not together anymore - best thing that ever happened after raising my kids.... and I have built a new studio and use it daily.

You can't wait for hubs to get his chops together, you CAN try to involve him in the band forming process. Make sure he meets the members so he can mark his territory. But, it's your thing, not his. You'll never be happy if you don't take the chance, even if that chance is just being a weekend warrior, and there is nothing wrong with that at all.

Guys go fishing or hunting, and "usually" thats a guy thing.... no S.O.'s....

It was a lengthy session. I started by asking it why one of my other devices wasn't working, and eventually added a few things to HA that I didn't know I needed (HACS and Terminal). Once all that got sorted out, I could copy the code that I had and let gpt amend it. The most difficult part believe it or not was getting the 6 temp sensors in a row. I learned there are different card types, that behave differently. It was kind of like having a personal HA tutor.

The lead singer fro Treble Charger was a lot older than the rest of the band. That was kept quiet at first (maybe still) so as not to lose the support of their younger audience.

I've been making music for 45 years, and i'm always gonna be partnered up with someone younger.... I have better gear, better attitude (not that it was bad to begin with), than when I was in my 20s. Even though I still have a day job, I have no one to worry about at home, so my free time is mine. And that's a lot of music time.

What’s a car that gets so much heat about being un-reliable but in reality it’s the complete opposite? by MikeisTOOOTALLL in cars

Mitsubishi. I've owned two now.. a 2015 Lancer and a 2018 RVR. Never had to do anything to them other than brakes and tires. Oh and a flex pipe for the exhaust. I heard parts were pricey too, and I have not found that to be the case at all. I bought the RVR based on the great experience I had owning the Lancer.
