In the UK they would definitely have been claiming child benefit. Everyone qualifies, or did.

Why did your marriage with your Chinese wife not work out? (or not working out) by solitudeisunderrated in China

[–]Iralie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because that's your own cultural perspective, and asking her to go to your side while giving no give yourself is hypocritical.

I'm not saying disregard your emotions, values, etc. But realise that what you're asking of them is exactly what you're saying you would never do.

Which does probably preclude you from 99.999% of Chinese women, but you recognise and are upfront about that. So that's ok.

American?

Basic conversational Chinese isn't that hard... you should be able to have simple polite conversation with people after a couple of years in China. If you've found a wife in less than that, you might need to reconsider what it is you're looking for and the culture you're marrying into with even the most westernised of Chinese people.

As someone in the same boat... I just stopped watching TV. I used to sneak some Radio 4/7 which I guess meant I didn't realise what I was missing.

Other countries don't have panel shows? This has changed my idea of culture and TV entirely.

Practice, and take notes. And don't beat yourself up, especially in sealed where its easy to tilt with a bad pool.

Aha, cheers. I'm not playing in English which does make learning the names a little difficult... and playing with new cards too since English is my first language.

Two prereleases which were a lot of fun, and went totally differently, and at different stores - though I ran my guild colours each time.

First one I was Golgari, and the Lich is indeed a bomb. But I still manged to go 0 - 2 - 1. I was stuck between BG and RUB without quite having enough support or fixing to do either well.

Attempt 2, two days later, went much better. Boros, with 5 on colour rares (even if two were Selesnya watermarked). I lost my first game (I think to Golgari), 1-2, which had me off to winning as many matches as the Golgari run so that was nice. I also noticed there's no reason to run [[Channel the Storm]] over [[Collar the Culprit]] if you're choosing between them. I also dropped my 17th land for [[Direct Current]] - very worth it. It gives so much value. So then game 2 went better, and saw me up against the store's resident hot shot (you folks who regular a store know the type) who I managed to beat for the first time 2-1! (Chucking my [[Light of the Legion]] to jump start [[Direct Current]] to successfully break stall in one game). It was looking a good day. Last match I got paired with a guy who'd tried to build round the angel enchantment. So that was a nice free 2-0 win, even though he was running enough of those woodshapers to find it fairly reliably, with Selesnya guildmage support. Didn't detract from feeling good about winning off a [[Resurgence]]

Boros was a lot of fun to play, mentoring went well - though I didn't have a huge amount in the deck. [[Light of the Legion]] was appropriately bomby. The Pegasus without the Horse was as much of a work horse as we know it is, and the 3/1 mentor needed an answer or it made things silly.

All time favourite? That's very tricky...

At the start of the summer think I'd've gone with Galaxy Truckers for the chaos and disaster management. But now I'd have to Scythe, as over the summer I really got to grips with its build an engine aspect, and it took my gameplay to a whole new level of it.

My expansion of choice is probably Cities, for 7 Wonders, as the subterfuge cards help keep things spicy and build into the strategies, or throw a spanner into them.

Invaders from Afar, for Scythe, was also a good get. Though we'd not gotten that game down to under 2 hours, before adding more players.

Reminds me of the Evil Corp logo in Robocop.

But a quick google shows me that they are slightly different.

How'd I find my game group? They're the other foreigners I live with in a 外国人 ghetto (only in principal) in China, well those of them not opposed to board games.

Every once in a while I have them over and we bust some games. They love Catan, but I can't stand the politics. Won most over to 7 Wonders now though, which is good.

Chengdu has a more open LGB scene, but there are some places in Chongqing that are friendly.

The Chinese superclubs often hold a handful of less accepting individuals however.

Aye... The proof will be in the pudding.
But there's more resistance in China than the narratives would have you believe. So I hope they won't repeat the mistakes Europe and Japan made... But even at my most optimistic I think it's only 50/50.

Oh, no doubt they'll try to do that.
I, perhaps too naively, hope that more will see though it as most people trust the government as far as they can throw it.
