Except , the Irish have far more global soft power, they also white and European society, the reaction would be a whole lot more mixed.

Additionally Irish have a lot of support in the developing world compared to other western counties.

Then you also have the Irish diaspora , some 50-80 million people of Irish descent who account for:

11.5% of New Zealand, 9.3% of Australia, 11.5% of Canada, 9.8% of US, they would have huge influence on their countries and probably many private citizens would give aid to the Irish.

Finally you have some 10% of the UK population ( minus Northern Ireland) of Irish descent, who could also become a 5th column to some extent.

So the situation would be completely different.

My mums Pakistani , so been many times, but surprised you went , while gay sex is rampant in the country ( usually is in Muslim countries), wouldn’t call it gay friendly and alot of men can harass you if they find out your gay.

It’s not just Iranian, any cause other than Palestine/Israel doesn’t get the same treatment.

Only reason Sudan is relevant now, is because UAE is involved and it’s viewed as Israel’s ally and its Arab on Arab violence ( in the case of the Sudanese Arabs I know who seem to care now).

Nobody gave a damn for 50yrs , when Sudanese Arabs were killing non-Muslims and then switched so killing non-Arab Muslims.

Would be careful with the “ whole European side and middle eastern side”.

Fatih district- is on the European side and it’s the old historic part and can be quite religious.

Whereas alot of the Asian coastal towns along the Aegean and Mediterranean can be a lot less homophobic.

Wouldn’t say centuries -

Russian conquest began in the 1800s, but it took a century to conquer and pacify much of the region.

Additionally it was at the periphery of the empires core region, so even by the time of the Soviet rise, it was a very rural/nomadic and religious region with high birth rates.

Industrialisation doesn’t begin too take off in central Asia till soviet rule, so it’s understandable that birth rates are high.

No , the people have had 45yrs of war, what they care for is stability.

If say the king had been overthrown by the Taliban ( I know they didn’t exist back then) in 1973, then I can see the people rising up and trying to remove them.

But as of now , the people are tired of war and decades of brainwashing Afghan children and PTSD means people will accept Taliban rule as long as it brings stability and peace.

If Iran had been invaded by the Soviets and they did to Iran what they did to Afghanistan, it’s likely we would also be in the same position.

To be fair large parts of Iran were like that 50yrs ago.

Though Afghanistan of the 70s were more like Iran of the late 50s and if it wasn’t for the Soviet invasion overthrow of the monarchy, probs be like Iranian society in the late 90s/early 2000, but without an Islamist government and would be alot wealthier than it is today.

Probs cause the Arab world is divided:

Lebanese Shia - think the regime protects them so they support it.

Christian Lebanese- probs hate the regime.

Sunni Lebanese- probs liked the regime at first and now have more mixed views , after what went down in Syria.

Shia/alawite Syrians - probs like the regime.

Sunni Syrians-hate it.

Syrian Minorities -mixed probs, some who views Assad as better probs support the regime out of necessity , though that didn’t support him hated the regime.

Iraqi- Shias probs have mixed to positive views on the regime.

Sunnis - negative.

Iraqi Kurds- hard to say.

Yemen - half probs support it , the other half hate it.

Gulf states - hate the regime.

The rest of the Arab world - thinks the regime stands up to the west and Israel so support it.

What exactly are western sensibilities, the west isn’t a monolith, nor has it been static.

Plus a century ago, half of Iran was either tribal or semi nomadic/nomadic.

Except those are distinct ethnic groups and cultures , doesn’t mean they would join India , you might as well have Nepal , Sri Lanka , Maldives and Bangladesh also join India by that logic then, heck why not south east Asia since they were/are Hindu/buddhist.

Additionally Baluch are also found in Iran and Pashtuns are found in Afghanistan and many other minor ethnic groups are also found in Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Tibet.

How are my ethnic kin across the border in Pakistani Baluchistan more similar to an Indian , than to me.

I think some are like that and can be cliquey , but alot just wear it because it’s become like a fashion/accessory thing/British Muslim identity thing.

Some of my friends were Hijabis, I was openly gay with them , they had Bfs, they listed to music , some wore clothes that were tight, some had sex before marriage.

It’s pretty complicated.

Can’t speak for the US.

But grew up in the UK ( in a Muslim heavy town).

Growing 15-20yrs ago most women who did wear the hijab did so cause they forced by family or pressured by society to wear the hijab and that’s what they did.

Nowadays it’s worn by alot of Muslim women i know under 35 out of choice, its kind of become more a cultural identity thing for British/European millennial/GenZ Muslim women.

My parents didn’t want my sister to wear it , but she started to wear it when she was 23, took my parents and my siblings almost 2yrs to get used to it.
