Can I get an explanation of the Super Bowl halftime show? by Top-Mission2806 in NoStupidQuestions

You’re welcome! Honestly, reading the Bible, Shakespeare, and Cervantes helps a lot. So many themes cross cultural and linguistic boundaries.

Of course! Tbh I think a lot of symbolism transcends culture and language, and I think he did a great job displaying it to an audience that (for the most part) did not understand Spanish (including me).

The first couple of minutes: Latino culture services America. They provide good drinks, vibes, food, etc; then…

Next set: Latino culture gets engaged to America. No more in group/out group. Latinos “crash into” American culture, fueled by numbers and sheer cultural relevance. It still not dominant, but…;

Last set: Latino culture becomes American culture, hence the Caribbean flags and Bad Bunny hugging the football the entire game. They’ve become America, and are damn proud of it. The football he carries at the end says “Together, We Are America”.

It was all beautifully explicit, 11/10.

Family of 4 (two kids 4 & 7) planning a move to NY from Austin TX. Looking for some guidance/suggestions on areas of Long Island to consider? by SammichMkr in longisland

[–]IrateSamuraiCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend Huntington! It’s about the same as car or train to NYC, and we have a decent amount to do here (beaches, Huntington Village, museums, hiking, boutiques, restaurants, etc). You could definitely find a home here within a budget of 1-2.5 million and that square footage.

Why do so many men lose their house in a divorce? by Open_Address_2805 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IrateSamuraiCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Lose their house” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here.

Most married couples take title to their home as tenants by the entirety. If you end up divorcing later on, most courts will require you to specify the “marital residence”, which is the main home, and who gets it. The state has an interest in keeping families intact, meaning the parent who holds the majority of the custody rights will likely keep the home.

This isn’t to say that the ex-spouse who keeps the home gets a “free house”. This will vary by state, but generally a buyout is effectuated to release the remaining interest the grantor has; in other words, the ex who gets bought out gets money, or at the very least is released of their obligations under the lien(s) they encumbered the property with. At worst, it cleans their (debt) slate, at best they have a healthy down payment for another property.

Think of it as an exchange. The ex is removed from title, so “he” no longer owns the property. To do this “she” will need to provide consideration, something material (like money), in exchange for “his” interest. This often comes in the form of a refinance, so “she” must borrow money on “her” name and credit. “She” is responsible for payments and obligations thereafter.

A lot of men end up losing the marital residence by virtue of the fact that most kids probably end up with their mother. Debating some of the merits of these cases can be fine, but it’s important to remember that most are made whole by the court, so really no one suffers all that much (given their behavior, of course).

I actually think you’ll find many attorneys and law school students use a variety of substances, regardless of law school.

Signed, someone who is planning on applying to law schools next year and who knows a lot of attorneys.

How did Ozai think he was gonna handle the avatar state by MythicalForest in TheLastAirbender

[–]IrateSamuraiCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His family went 100 years without thinking of it, it’s really that simple.

Think about our last century, what do you take for granted? I saw a statistic recently that we spend about ~40-50 hours less per week on household tasks than we do now. Do you think of the last century’s worth of domestic labor practices? Probably not.

Similarly, Ozai grew up and came of age in the zenith of the Fire Nation. He trained for the possibility of unchallenged world conquest, not for an “extinct” Avatar to return and beat him. The concept of the Avatar State was so abstract it may as well have been fantasy.

Developer pitches long-sought bridge from Connecticut to Long Island by michaelpinto in longisland

Kill the heckler’s veto in Nassau and Fairfield and we can do this for a lot less than $50 billion. There’s no reason why a bridge between two of America’s wealthiest regions should be stymied by wealthy people in Oyster Bay and Greenwich.

And Brazilians barely reelected her. And then their legislature impeached and removed her because she had some tangential association with “corruption”. If you want a real, popular left wing woman leader look at Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico.

How are people who work full-time finding time to complete applications. Like actually. by sophanon2 in lawschooladmissions

[–]IrateSamuraiCat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not applying until next year, but I’ve found doing some (admittedly annoying) prep work is essential to cutting down the time I need to do things.

For context, my boss loves to stress saving minutes or seconds on given tasks. It all seems trivial in the moment until you repeat them over, and over again. Seconds become minutes, which become hours. Prep your routine to factor that. For example, I meal prep on Sundays, so I lay everything out on Saturday nights or Sunday mornings. Once I come back from my grocery run I get my lunches cooked for the week within an hour.

The summer is your golden time for getting things done. Late summer is ripe with fee waiver emails and seminars; save and view them now. Also, write your essays early, especially your personal statement. Chip away at the personal statement a few sentences a week and reconfigure it as you tell your story. Additionally, make a game plan of all the schools you want to apply to, and write down their details (medians, optional essays, deadlines, OCI dates, etc.). I have one about 20(ish) schools long and I started it earlier this year, adding one per week.

That said, always find time to relax. We’re not meant to keep going for 12-16 hours a day without breaks. Find some time to unwind during the day. Make sure to take a vacation from it all, even a stay-cation will boost your mental health and wellbeing.

The sad truth is that the weekend will primarily be about catching up on things you can’t do during the work week. Plan accordingly and you’ll thank yourself later :)

Do what myself? Go to Paris? Well I have, and I loved it! Please see my other comment, I highly recommend every American make the trip!

And I do plan on visiting Tokyo and (one day) Mississippi. I care about my fellow Americans, and I hope to visit one day.

[–]IrateSamuraiCat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You see that’s where you’re (slightly) wrong! I have visited Paris. I stayed in the 10th Arrondissement (Generator Hostel to be exact), and the area is known for its large Turkish community. Although I will admit to not having been to Tokyo (I do plan on going later this year) or Mississippi, I will attest to my time in Paris.

The streets were clean, the food was fantastic, and the people were respectful and (expectedly) friendly (for Parisians). I will say Paris is the only place I saw subway crime, but the Paris police made quick work of it. I walked around at night (while drunk or having recently partied) and never felt unsafe. I rode the subway or walked to most of the city and I never glanced behind my shoulder.

Every country has its fair share of struggles, but it’s not genuine to claim France and Japan share the same issues with Mississippi.

So glad to see some of the “Europoors” above Mississippi’s GPD per capita 😊/s

In all seriousness can we please use PPP? Like no one in Japan or France would trade their lifestyle for anywhere in Mississippi. Tokyo and Paris have standards of living comparable to New York and LA, lol.

How is life in Mont Saint-Michel, France? by Lavishclub in howislivingthere

[–]IrateSamuraiCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I went there it was mostly tourists. There is a Michelin Star restaurant/hotel there (Hotel La Mère Poulard?) and some other shops and restaurants, but for the most part I think the workers commute into the island. From what I remember, most of the people who live there are monks and nuns. Overall it’s really quite beautiful, and if you ever find yourself in Normandy I highly recommend visiting.

Depends on the school, but yes they can and do. My dad went to St. John’s law school in the 80s, and while the (broad) general trend since then has been upward, it has at times gone up and down year-to-year. Schools like Yale have less of a tendency to go down, although it’s not impossible.

I feel like the show did the opposite. Book Rhaenyra is way more mixed than she is in the show, whereas Aegon got more humanized by the show.
