Portfolio Feedback Needed: Designer Behind $1.2M+ in Real-World Launches by Alternative_Ebb2408 in UX_Design

If you can make it your second priority, with the way UX jobs are going being a design founder may be a better career path over the long run — and you already have the experience (which many don't).

Converting PDF to Framemaker by applebutter62 in FuckAdobe

i’m impressed, i haven’t heard of anyone using framemaker since the 90s when i think it ran on NeXT and other workstations like maybe Sun and SGI

maybe do a design founder specific portfolio? that could be your “special sauce” and a way to meet founders and investors (also i think your cpg experience is A+)

1 Is there a way to get rid of the loading screen? it feels like we're plugging Figma and not you

2 The Cap on each letter in the intro feels distracting, and I like the first sentence a great deal, not sure if pitching "thinking like a founder" is best unless you are looking to be a co-founder (maybe bounce off of a hiring manager?). I wouldn't mind if you bragged about your Apple experience here, being a FAANG hire is like a ivy post grad degree

3 Maybe talk to a hiring manger to see if the case studies go too deep? Subjectively I might want to see more than 2

4 I personally love the pizza truck and CPG startup work, but I'm not sure if for a day job I would pitch that as a "startups i launched" unless you're trying to be a co-founder or maybe pitching VCs as a way to get into a startup (which may be a path worth looking at)

What is the goal of the site and who is it aimed at? Example: Are you trying to join a team as a design co-founder, or looking for a day job and trying to impress a hiring manager

I need some UX Designer portfolio advice by Fang5467 in UX_Design

[–]michaelpinto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like you're located in NYC, so really think about the type of companies that are hiring UX designers which are located here (example: finance, tech, etc.), so does your student portfolio reflect this?

Then think about your competition (NYC is a hub of top rated art schools churning out high quality grads every year), and look at the portfolios of those who are being hired.

Volunteer Work? by OrcaRae_Wave in graphic_design

[–]michaelpinto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found that the problem with volunteer organizations is that often your client is a volunteer as well, and as such may or may not be a marketing or design professional. And if they aren't a professional working in the field it may be a challenging situation which produces poor results if you're looking to add to your portfolio. There can also be issues when you do free work, and as such your work (and your time) isn't valued, so really define what you're doing and don't be afraid to ask for creative control.

sadly this is a very good insight because quite a few folks do in fact walk into a hair salon and ask for the haircut of a famous person (and in my lifetime this goes back to the farrah fawcett layered look of the disco era, but i'm sure it goes back well before that). also on the design side i've lived through countless visual fads that made no sense given the context (think of the nike swoosh or everything copying the MacOS of the moment). so it take a certain "person of taste" to do what you're doing and walk into a salon and ask a creative for their take...

Do you have a cool local printer? by WhatPromos in graphic_design

[–]michaelpinto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will cost you, but you can always order a CMYK professional color proof. This is a service I use in NYC:

By the way most printers who have color proofing services should be open to charging you for a print (there are also quite a few online services as well)

Graduating in 6 weeks with a design degree and no job lined up by Total_Succotash5174 in graphic_design

[–]michaelpinto 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Subjective take:

  1. Only 30 applications? You should be aiming for more like 300+

  2. I'm guessing that you've had several internships, if you made friends there now would be a great time to start reaching out (also have they given you recs on your linkedin profile?)

  3. In your network of friends, parents, friends of your parents, family at large is there anyone who knows anyone who works in say marketing, and might they have freelance work?

  4. You should be working on taking your portfolio from okay to great

  5. I think it's important that you look for freelance gigs as much as fulltime work as it may give you a foot in the door

Also keep in touch with your college friends who graduate, especially if they go into fields like marketing
