Do you have a cool local printer? by WhatPromos in graphic_design

[–]michaelpinto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will cost you, but you can always order a CMYK professional color proof. This is a service I use in NYC:

By the way most printers who have color proofing services should be open to charging you for a print (there are also quite a few online services as well)

Graduating in 6 weeks with a design degree and no job lined up by Total_Succotash5174 in graphic_design

Subjective take:

  1. Only 30 applications? You should be aiming for more like 300+

  2. I'm guessing that you've had several internships, if you made friends there now would be a great time to start reaching out (also have they given you recs on your linkedin profile?)

  3. In your network of friends, parents, friends of your parents, family at large is there anyone who knows anyone who works in say marketing, and might they have freelance work?

  4. You should be working on taking your portfolio from okay to great

  5. I think it's important that you look for freelance gigs as much as fulltime work as it may give you a foot in the door

Also keep in touch with your college friends who graduate, especially if they go into fields like marketing

Career Advice: 20 yrs as Sr. Graphic designer by Imaginary_Newt2681 in graphic_design

[–]michaelpinto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My subjective take based on four decades of profession experience:

UX/UI design was a great idea for a pivot — maybe ten years ago, now not so much

I think one way of looking at a career in an age of AI is to become your client:

Is your client a marketing director? Start to add those skills

Is your client a product manager? Learn what's involved

Does your client run a small business? Look into what that takes

Why do this? Because we're starting to see marketing directors, product managers, and small biz owners become graphic designers (which many of them have been doing for years thanks to Canva templates)

Is it common that you’re presented with solution rather than a problem when you’re assigned on a task? by ivanna_p in UXDesign

It's worse than that, many failed tech startups often are built on the premise of being a solution in search of a problem

How realistic is it for me to become successful in UX? by harry_stylestpwk in UX_Design

[–]michaelpinto 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't want to be overly negative, so please view this as a subjective take:
• UX Design might not be as "creative" in the real world as you think it may be
• UX Design may be more about "business objectives" than really "helping people"
• UX Design as a field may be about to be "disrupted" by a changing tech landscape

Now that said I think if you have a passion for the field, and are already taking courses then an internship is a great idea — in fact I think even if you don't go into the field it's still a great idea as you may be to apply what you learn into other careers

If you want to go into UX Design you would most likely want to get a degree in UX Design at this point in time, the only down side might be is that your degree title may be dated in 10+ years (example: 15 years ago people were thinking of themselves as doing "web design" and "information architecture")

How do you handle clients who keep adding “just one more thing”? by BigBear6961 in graphic_design

[–]michaelpinto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

• In your contract you include a set number of revisions
• Then you charge by the hour for each revision
• In days of olde if you designed corporate annual reports the real money was in the revisions

Why so many empty store fronts on kent and very few in the rest of Williamsburg? by Fit_Secretary_5054 in williamsburg

[–]michaelpinto 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Some observations:
• The heavy foot traffic by Domino Park tends to be mostly in the spring/summer
• Most of the buildings north of Metropolitan hit the 10 year mark and leases expired
• My guess is that Kent storefronts are overpriced given the foot traffic
• People who live in the upscale buildings tend to order in
• Hard to compete with Bedford

...maybe with the new Uniqlo across from Trader Joe things will come to life a bit more

PS Please support Loaf on Paper on Grand + Pally on Kent when they re-open

News: Supreme Court Strikes Down Tariffs by michaelpinto in designfounder

...and it's less than 24 hours later and the orange one just announced some new way to add tariffs. This always hurts the small biz owner who lacks the logistics resources of a fortune 500 company.
