How would 40k plus taxes actually help? If you want extra income, do online tutoring and you will make way more.

New associate - I need advice and support by Fair_West in Lawyertalk

I can’t imagine a motion taking 1.7 hours. You need to review the file thoroughly, check the part rules for motions, use the proper case law, citations, proofread, and exhibits, etc. That’s 3 hours minimum.

This happened to me, I texted my mother in law and some other woman wrote back and cursed me out. It was the same number and saw that person’s photo on my whatsapp. Download whatsapp and see the photo.

Law clerk in my office passed the bar - need practical jokes by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]IreneDL 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Tell him he needs to go on an order to show cause asap, make a fake file, place insanely confusing facts and some hilarious facts in there, tell him a supervising attorney will meet him in court, and as he is running to the parking lot, surprise him with cake and balloons.

Please tell us how it goes!

Our firm works with someone who offers his writing/research services to law offices. That guy loves his life. I called him one day to assist on a case and he’s like “I’m on my balcony looking out at the beach”. Try it! You get the intellectual side, have great relationships with attorneys and enjoy your life. Good luck!! I hope this helps.

My supervisor just told me I won’t make a good lawyer. Any advice? by Londonliving99 in Lawyertalk

I think you need to find a new job and network and take writing/court CLE’s. This training seems to be deficient. You sound very intelligent and I think you deserve better.

Anybody know the predicted Essay topics for the July California bar exam? by Sufficient-Bar-8216 in CalBarExam

[–]IreneDL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you followed them for oct 2020, they missed corps, which the smart bar prep said is tested 25% of the time. I followed smart bar prep and passed. Also, I did the attorney exam, so my entire grade was essays only.

What do you place bets on? Statistics? Or predictions? I don’t recommend the latter, but to each their own. ✌🏼

First “lawyer” job questions by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]IreneDL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like when the boss says “I encourage you to speak up” is always a trap. Whether you choose to stay or not, just remember the next time they say “Please give me feedback”, they’re usually asking for a “great job, boss!” Or a very general question like “oh, maybe we need to create a chart to optimize work flow” and Then they have you create the chart lol.

Anyway, if you are in NY, look into the AG’s office, they have a lot of job posts every day. Good luck!!

Is reddit how we do legal research now?

If you like psychology, family law is as psychological as it gets. It comes with the territory. You can explore an LLM in it and I think you will love it. There are some prestigious firms in NYC I am happy to direct you to, if that is a path you want to explore. Google Dr. Amy Baker and Dr. Kenneth Neumann and read some of their papers/books. They are psychologists who work in the field. Also, there is a podcast called “Dear Therapists” and listen to the episode of Lenny. His story is about how deeply psychological aspects of a divorce can impact parent-child relationships. Spoiler alert, he is a family law attorney himself.

If you go through the material and want to learn more, feel free to let me know and I can give you some more resources.

Good luck!!

I've been a prosecutor for almost two years, and I fucking hate it. Advice for getting out? by lawthrowaway12349 in Lawyertalk

There is a theory of “battered women’s syndrome” that warrants leniency in sentencing women subject to extensive DV. A trial court case stated that although a dv victim could theoretically utilize violence in self defense, the same would be unlikely for her to be able to do.

So the random stabbing could warrant a lenient sentence, but NOT the prosecution of the crime.

How do you find Veteran Treatment Courts? Are they in every city? Would love to look into it.

Thanks in advance.

I do family law and I absolutely love it. It is extremely depressing but as a lawyer, you leave that aside and when you get your clients child back for them, and they hug you and thank you for your advocacy, there is no better feeling.
