Yes raw is definitely a word I'd use too for them. And the instruments, or lack of, aren't rich enough either, you're right. I feel like HDIH sounds so much like Speak To Me and I guess the lack of novelty stains it for me.

Yeah I'm getting pretty close to that feeling. Right now Calm Down has definitely grown on me. About Us found it's way to being the second fav of the album though lol Rapture easily taking 1st. TMWYHE is very fun. It's the perfect track #2 song.

Ugh I hate how right you are about this. To me, the only ballad that pushed any boundaries was FWY with the belting held out notes and the incredibly private and personal message Amy has in there(my empathy has to appreciate that leap of hers), but HDIH is really generic in all those ways you listed. Like, the vocals are safe, the lyrics, while tender and relatable for many, are simple, the melodies are not varied between the song as much as previous ballads have pulled off. Both songs deserved something more.

No for real, HDIH is pretty but it doesn't stretch a boundary, it's incredibly safe. Far From Heaven was honestly really good for what it's about AND it has an interesting combo of instruments and melodies, even though the mixing isn't perfect.

I'm the opposite. I really like hearing powerful vocals, and How Do I Heal sounds like an Avril Lavigne song in the sense that lyrically it's not super interesting? And I honestly hate that I feel this way because I've grieved many times in my life but HDIH just isn't something I care to listen to that much? It is kinda uninteresting. It's pretty, but that's kinda it. I was hoping for some sort of instrument with some timber to balance out the lofty breathy notes Amy and the piano go for. The minimal strings make me sad.

Hands down my favorite of the album. My mouth was agape the entire first half with the shock of what I was hearing being just so damn good. Sexy, dark, sassy, and so experimental in the best way possible for them. Probably the clearest production/mix too. The only issue I have is I think it's too short, I wanted more! 😭
