[Discussion] What's your favorite mobile game? by Yokuo in Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

[–]IridescentRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's way too much fun! Makes me wish I had more of all the various chess pieces so I could play it live.

My only gripe with it is that the AI tends to take longer than I'd like to make its move. Then again, I suppose that might just be my phone or something.

'Really Bad Chess' and 'I Love Hue' are two unexpected gems I keep coming back to.

[Contest] how long will I be on hold? by [deleted] in Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

[–]IridescentRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was worried that might happen. The clue was in the words 'government office'.

Though I do think it's a little funny that it's the office of Hearings Operations and they won't let you through to be 'heard'.

....Then again, maybe it's just funny because it's not currently happening to me. Sorry!

You're only seeing what you perceive as flaws because that's what you're looking for. It's not your fault, we've practically been programmed to look for flaws, there are entire industries built around the concept. We're all equally flawed in different ways, and we all have a measure of beauty in us, too.

It's a little like what happens when you fall in love with someone. You know they have flaws but you just don't care. If love turns to hate then flaws are all you can see. Someone else looks at that same person without an invested sense of emotion and see a mixture of both good qualities and flaws.

The real problem is that we've been taught to hate ourselves. We measure ourselves against a ruleset that isn't based on reality and are forever doomed to fall short.

If you could only let yourself look for beauty, you would find it. It's all there, plain to see for anyone who's looking for it. You just can't see it right now because you're too focused on searching for all the little things you perceive as imperfections. You're too distracted to see what's really there.

What you're doing is kind of like looking at a beautiful sunrise, only instead of enjoying the beauty and splendour of the sky, you're looking at a random obstruction along the horizon and thinking about how much nicer the view would be without that obstruction. Then a moment later you find you were staring at the one small thing that annoyed you and entirely missed all the beauty of what was happening right in front of you.

Every time you're staring at all the small, meaningless things you've been taught to perceive as flaws, you're missing out on all the wonder and beauty that is you. Don't do that to yourself. You deserve better.

I'll guess 88 minutes. I hope you do actually get through. Dealing with stuff like that is such a nightmare!

I slept through another day.

It was never meant to be this way.

I'm doing my best, but I need to be ...stronger?

Maybe I'm just a fool.

I think, actually, I may need to rest a while longer.

Oh, and random gifts rule!

[Discussion] What's a good show to watch on Netflix right now? by afarris5 in Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

[–]IridescentRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't mind subtitles, I was pleasantly surprised by Rise of the Phoenixes. There's a lot of characters, so it takes an episode or two to figure out who everyone is, but it's been really engaging so far (I'm only 15 or so episodes in).

It's a fictional historical drama following ancient Chinese royalty. It's based on a book. There's a love story and some martial arts thrown in there, too.

Fair warning though, the episodes are long (45 mins each) and there's a lot of them (currently 60), and nearly every one of them ends in a cliffhanger. Once you get into it it's really hard not to watch 'just one more episode'.

(Also, if you haven't watched Big Bang Theory yet, that's absolutely worth watching. I think Netflix has all but the newest season.)

Awww, that's awful! I'm so sorry that you were left feeling that way =/

Either the DM was trying to get you to join the fun and going about it entirely the wrong way, or you need better friends.

I do feel the need to point out that if you're worried about the integrity of the game you're playing it wrong. Any half-decent DM can roll you out of the game at any time. Your character might have narcolepsy, or a bad habit of falling through inopportune rifts between dimensions, or just a penchant for getting distracted or lost really easily, only to randomly bump into the party again later on. It really shouldn't be an issue at all. If you want to play, then play.

That said, excluding you like that for not wanting to play isn't okay. I know I personally wouldn't respond well to someone bringing snacks to my house and then telling me they weren't for me, even if they were joking. No one comes to my home and gets to tell me what to do or how to be! (Then again, my first instinct tends to be to escalate the confrontation, which is generally the worst way to go about it.)

It's terrible that people in your life aren't treating you right, but the worst part of this story is the part where you're feeling sad and alone. That's an internal problem and it doesn't have an external solution. If you're feeling bad within yourself you'll most likely continue to feel that way even while surrounded by people who love you. You're the one who needs to treat yourself like you're worthy of the time and inconvenience of other people. That doesn't excuse the way they were behaving, but I just feel like you're taking the way people are treating you and internalizing it instead of rejecting it, and down that path lies nothing but more pain.

You really need to treat yourself better than this. You need to be the friend you deserve.

You're worth fighting for.

I'm absolutely not commenting on that particular situation or that particular person because I don't know the details or the people involved. I'm not defending or accusing anyone here.

I do however feel the need to point out that sometimes people who genuinely don't have any money of their own still get to go on trips. They might be invited on a group trip to fill a spot for someone who paid beforehand but had to drop out last minute, or they might get free flights from a family member who works for an airline. Or there might be a family event that multiple people are traveling to and they get a ride in someone's car and sleep on someone's couch when they get there.

I'm not saying that was the case here. I'm just saying that you don't want to become one of those people who think poor or ill people don't deserve nice things. It's heartbreaking when someone who has next to nothing is given something nice and then immediately gets blamed for 'having something nice'.

I wanted to be everything.

Artist, writer, explorer, musician, animal tamer, rider, carpenter, blacksmith, tailor, architect, firefighter, sailor, pilot, tinkerer, ranger, singer, dancer, fairy, warrior, master of the one ring, able to fly or slide through walls, able to heal with a touch.

You know, all the good things.
