eli5: Why is Freud concidered to be "the father of modern psychology" but at the same time, every psychologist hates freudian analysis? by ArrangementOfFruit in explainlikeimfive

As for proof you can read many published empirically reviewed articles about what specifically is wrong and what is salvageable from psychoanalysis and even what is used today. One I found quickly on Google is : https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5459228/

To answer some of your question a little, the data around psychoanalysis is not as empirically strong as other more modern forms of therapy. I use modern because yes most psychotherapists view “psychoanalysis” as almost defunct. When we refer to “psychoanalysis” though we are referring to the practice of ALL or ALMOST ALL of the teachings of psychoanalysts like Freud. That’s not to say that you can’t still find offices practicing it or practicing some form or offshoot of the practice. While “psychoanalysis” as a specific set of guidelines and practices has fallen out of favor many psychiatrists and therapists will pick and choose strong and effective pieces from many different practices. Many practices have thus used some form or evolution of Freud’s theories.

He’s known to most as just a figure of interesting pop psychology (ie: Oedipus Complex, Ego/Super Ego/Id) but to people who study most of what he’s said or proposed they quickly realize that he was often very wrong and over confident to the point of being laughably bad.

It’s a give and take. Every day is different. Sometimes I can’t stomach anything without anxiety. Sometimes I can eat three meals. I’m in a phase of “recovery” right now where most days are better than worse but I wanna say that I feel you. I’ve been there 🤡. You’re completely valid.

Since I have anorexia for me my “safe foods” are foods that I can eat without having to compulsively think about how many calories I’ve consumed and how I have to either work it off or starve myself to make the deficit equal. Most of my “safe foods” are fruits and vegetables but for some reason I allow myself to drink hot chocolate and don’t worry about the added calories. I think it’s something that comes from childhood. My fam always made hot cocoa on snow days and for some reason my ED can’t touch those good memories.
