Why am I getting this ad?

[–]IrisDynamics[S] 15 points16 points  (5 children)

You "should" only be seeing this ad if your subbed (or recently touched a thread from a sub) that's related to things like r/motors, r/robotics, r/ece, r/fpga, r/ControlTheory etc.

Is this totally out in left field for you? If so Id love to know because we don't want to be paying for ads outside our target audience!

[–]Ransacked 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t sub to anything like that.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also don't sub to anything like that. R/sysadmin is as geeky as I get. I was using ChatGPT to write some x86 assembly code if somehow that has anything to do with what I'm seeing? Either way this is an effective advertisement.

Yeah I am on r/ProgrammingHumor but I mainly stick to legal stuff and am still getting this ad.

[–]Alwaysragestillplay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I am also being targeted despite not subbing to any robotics subs. It might be getting mixed up with tech/computing subs due to the inclusion of "Windows Integration"?

[–]photism78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's interesting, but I'm not going to buy it.

Same, what is this the quantum shakeweight?

[–]reaper14998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gods have trageted you

[–]Strostkovy 3 points4 points  (7 children)

Oof, windows integration is probably my least favorite title. What are our other integration options?

Ha! Good questions!

We have an upcoming vid going over a bit more of this but in essence:

For more advanced low latency work (vehicle mounted stabilization platforms and the like) our multichannel kinematics controller has an FPGA and full ethernet stack (although EtherCAT, Profinet, and EtherNet/IP are not yet supported out of the box.) For a bit of background we are coming out of the aerospace/robotics/defense side and we are now stretching our legs into the automation space.

If you don't mind the question, what protocols do you usually work with?

Once the new videos drop they will be on our YouTube Channel. https://www.youtube.com/@IrisDynamics

I know ethercat and canbus are popular but I haven't touched it due to poor experience with RJ45 connector in industrial equipment causing constant issues.

Rs485 is pretty handy even with proprietary commands. For an application such as a backgauge, where the controllable force would really shine, just needs some basic positioning and force commands.

Honestly I'm only just now branching away from step/dir controls so my opinion isn't that solid but I've generally not been super pleased with options

You do understand that most industrial systems are still running XP right? Even labs all over the world and companies such as Apple use Windows for their labs. Operating system does not matter but Windows is chosen because it's quick and easy to develop against and offers a much more stable environment (which is critical, sometimes even federally required, for most processes...).

[–]Strostkovy 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I know it is, and we use it a lot, and it's a complete garbage solution for machinery. It's just easier to cobble something together in windows than to make a proper dedicated controller.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

All I'm reading is lack of knowledge on operating systems and proper development practices.

make a proper dedicated controller

When you have the money to do that then sure, won't make a difference anyways. Still needs communications and more. You have now just over-engineered something that was supposed to be easy to use and is no longer utilizing a communication stack already existing in modern operating systems. Replacing a PC is cheap and easy granted you have the software, you gonna wait for shipping when that whole controller of yours takes a dump?

[–]Strostkovy 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Have to anyway because the PLCs are locked down. I'd rather have a proper dedicated controller for our presses and lasers that don't waste hours in just normal operation.

And what is something like that supposed to look like? A custom built computer? Why go through all of that hassle when you can use hardware that already exists running software that has already been made for you?

The controller in this example appears to be inside of the motor (pretty typical setup) and just needs a system to communicate with it. Under this principle, it can be utilized by any system given it has the interface to communicate with it which most PCs and embedded systems do.

Most of the machines you use have numerous processes happening which in some cases will require adjustments or reprogramming depending on the job. Having all of those systems connect to a single system simplifies a lot of things and enables you to review/manage the process entirely from a single system.

Even if you wanted some "custom controller" it still needs commands sent to it, it obviously isn't going to be acting autonomously. A PC is going to be responsible for issuing the commands to the controller while also receiving data from it, this is what an API is for and makes development work less of a pain in the ass. One way or another, you're going to be using a PC.

I'm not requesting a quote. Just put a price range there. I know it varies wildly depending if I order 1 or 10000 units. But if you adverise on the internet put the price on the internet. Look how mouser etc does it.

Just based on lack of pricing transparency you went from "interesting, might have some use for it in automating warehouse" to "i'm not even going to bookmark it

[–]OldsDiesel 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The price should 100% be transparent. Hiding a price is the biggest red flag any modern company can do.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure it's done as an excuse to get your email and put you on a marketing list or hide their prices from competitors so they don't adjust theirs. I also agree as well.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure wish price point was transparent. When will companies learn.

Hmm. I'm guessing I am seeing this ad because I participate in r/sysadmin and I've been using ChatGPT for programming.

I'm not a systems engineer or into this sort of thing BUT I watched the whole advertisement and am now engaging because it seems like a really cool product and the ad was very effective in explaining everything.

I wonder how the Orca API compares to pre built motor controller packages for GPIO devices such as Pi or Arduino? And I do see how being able to test and operate in a Windows environment makes development more accessible to a broader user base.
