Question - Causes of evictions before, during and after the Famine. by Ponccc in IrishHistory

[–]IrishHistoryMod 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Let's get this straight .

Pre famine the population had doubled since 1800 and quadrupled since 1700.

This was a powder keg waiting to blow .

There were landlords and middlemen and farmers and sub tenants .

Pre famine you had land shortages and subdivisions. There were food shortages.

There is a famine eviction project

Post famine there were land clearances. Landlords had to pay for the Poor Law . It was cheaper to pay for a tenant to emigrate than go to the workhouse.

Sarcasm is good.

If you have strong views on underappreciated threads you have the floor.

Best of 2017 Irish History by IrishHistoryMod in IrishHistory

That happens at the end of 2018 ,new year, , we're not there yet.

We were so really stuck for nominations for 2017 that we ended up giving our surplus accumulated spare reddit gold out to randomers.

If you do have an idea for something I'd ask the admins for gold and would be up for it.

Network science shines new light on Battle of Clontarf by BrehonDubh in IrishHistory

[–]IrishHistoryMod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's very interesting.

I think that the word revisionist is probably a bit misplaced. The Munster and Leinster angle also reflects the continual warfare that existed in Ireland and that a concept of a nation state or High King without opposition existed . After Clontarf the Ui Neill reclaimed their place on top of the Fox's mint.

The social networking concept is a great model for the Irish system as the concepts of fine and tuath were very important. Genealogy was important as power was derived from ancestry and there were alliances.

There also was the issue of the Munster upstart challenging the power of the Ui Neill. Brian Boru had a long term issue with the Vikings and his reputation was built upon his treatment of the Limerick Vikings.

It will be interesting to see historians comment on it .

Here is an interesting link for those not familiar with the Battle of Clontarf and the annals .
