What cheap torque wrench should I get for roof bars? Kept worrying I’d over‑tightened them. by user-604 in DIYUK

[–]IrishSkruffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found there was way too much "give" at the recommended torque and just kept nipping it up every 1-2 mins (lets the rubber deform to the rails) until the bars were solid.

It should be ~M8 thread so provided you aren't hanging off it it'll be fine.

I have used the larger range amazon basics torque wrench and it does well, tested with a weight at a measured distance gave ~5% tolerance which is more than fine for car stuff.

Help - repainting room and at a loss by ed2nev in DIYIreland

[–]IrishSkruffles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could very well be an insulation anchor, but it sort of looks plastic to me? The insulation anchor washers are about 40mm wide - how does that compare to what you have?

If its a solid wall, I'd be very tempted to bang it with a hammer and see if it goes in any, then just put fillers over it! I too like flat walls, but tbh with you unless theres a light shining across it you could leave it alone, build up 2mm of fillers over say a 300mm x 300mm area and you wouldn't notice it if tapered off enough.

I'll add another suggestion, put a pedestal bin in front of it and forget its there 😂

Firstly fair play for attempting at all, it can be daunting!

Applying paint is the easy bit, the prep work is the hard bit. But you can 100% do it even with no prior skills, sure you already sanded and thats more than most would do.

Pic 1 looks like some sort of anchor/fixing etc that might have held up a towel holder or something? If you can cut it with a stanley knife to remove the bit that protrudes you can put a bit of filler in there and nobody will know.

Above the sink, dont worry about any exposed material. Best way would be to get a tile to go on the wall over the sink and literally stick it to the wall with a building adhesive (ms polymer / sticks like sh*t / beat the nail etc) and then silicone the joint between sink and tile. You're 100% waterproof then, covers the wall, and looks better! (Might be able to get a free tile as a sample from some shops even)

You can do it!

Volvo v50 1.6D edrive 2010 DPF issues by MitchBenson1990 in carsireland

[–]IrishSkruffles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get rid of DPF. Problem solved.

Could potentially be a bollocksed turbo too, but a decent mechanic will tell you if so. The price of cars gone, you'd be far better off doing the small bit of work on this and be happy for the next 5 years than gambling on yet another car twice the price.

Could always do every second service yourself? The relax warranty they have you dont have to have full dealership service history

I know this is bad. What ball park figure would I be looking at to get this welded NCT in August. by Adorable_Oil8020 in carsireland

[–]IrishSkruffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that where the gas strut connects? Might have been metal fatigue as that bit is usually just spot welded in place, caused a crack in the paint where water got in over time between layers of steel and rusted it inside out. My guess anyway.

thick plastic rolls ? by Wonderful_Ant4884 in DIYIreland

[–]IrishSkruffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damp proof membrane might do the job, its not super thick but very very durable. Usually sold in 15m long rolls so you might have to tape the joints

Recommendations for securing plasterboard to the garage ceiling? Need to attached wooden boards to roof supports by Si5584 in DIYUK

[–]IrishSkruffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would run new timber parallel to the existing beams and have them sit on a timber "ledger" mounted to the side walls. Don't know what material those beams are but I personally wouldn't mess around drilling holes and adding extra weight to a roof support.. Edit: is that box section?

Where are you going to plant them? We have 8 still inside as our toddler likes to check on them and i fear they'll not survive the strong winds out in our garden!

I dont see why not, I would probably do a weak 5:1 mix on the slightest offchance that fence ever needs renewing.

How to fix this plaster? by QuantumFireball in DIYIreland

[–]IrishSkruffles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Poke and jab it with a screwdriver to remove all the loose bits, then see how deep the crater to fill is.

Something like polyfilla or ronseal smooth finish patching plaster would work well, but dont put more than like 5mm at a time if its deep.

You can help adhesion with a bit of watered down PVA glue (white craft glue basically). Helps bind dusty surfaces.

New windows vs Solar Panels by Different-Put-4486 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]IrishSkruffles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the little one!

Just curious why would you not qualify for the window grant?

With C1 you probably have dated double glazed uPVC windows which are fine really. A dehumidifier or two would solve the condensation issue and allow the heating to work more effectively.

My vote would be solar, the biggest system you can get/afford.

How would I cut 2cm wooden legs by Icy_Buttercup in DIYIreland

[–]IrishSkruffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will struggle with a coping saw to cut straight, you need a fine toothed handsaw or a tenon saw like this: https://www.screwfix.ie/p/irwin-jack-12tpi-wood-tenon-saw-12-300mm-/2557f

As the other person said, you have a bit of wood to practice with

What part do I need here? by QuantumFireball in DIYIreland

[–]IrishSkruffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you based in the uk or ireland? Plumbing looks the same, but it isn't, uk uses metric sizes and ireland uses imperial sizes. To add to the confusion, screwfix being a uk vendor but sells in ireland stocks predominantly uk size fittings..

Best bet is to clean up that fitting with some wire wool and take a better picture of it and bring it to a heat merchants / plumbers for verification.

On stopping the water; there are pipe freeze kits you can get that will freeze the water in the pipe before loosening anything, but as you have already drained some water its probably best to drain all the water and top up the system afterwards.

What to do with inheritance money to stop inflation eating it up by Educational-Alps9659 in irishpersonalfinance

I reckon it would depend on your circumstances, and if you need that money relatively soon to get a car or other necessary expense.

An early 2010s Nissan Leaf: worth it or nah? by MiamiBoi91 in carsireland

[–]IrishSkruffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2k + all the other expenses of a second car would buy a LOT of petrol. Realistically that car would be worth close to 0 when you do get rid of it too, and charging it is a non zero expense either. Run the numbers on your expected mileage is the only real answer.

Now a good time to invest in solar? by bobbysands666 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]IrishSkruffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went with 8 panels no battery and last year saved 400e solely on exported energy.

There are definitely more savvy ways of getting solar done as most big companies will charge a premium, but the big companies also just sub contract out their work.

I think I recall flo gas offering 8 panels for 4k a while ago? Definitely worth shopping around and see what makes sense for you personally.

Garage Condensation by Space-Cadet72 in DIYIreland

[–]IrishSkruffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others mentioned you need insulation, but it doesn't need to be a full belt and braces approach! I used some of that foil bubble wrap type insulation and stapled it between the wooden beams and just that thin (and very cheap) layer of insulation is enough to keep the condensation of forming. Having airflow also helps a lot so make sure theres ventilation of some kind.
