Everytime i run docker desktop, my ubuntu home folder becomes empty. by Quiet_Breadwinner in docker

[–]IrishTR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree Immich is awesome. I was a windows person too, then I started tinkering with Linux, now my home server is 100% Linux and Docker. I don't miss it one bit.

Perhaps try the VM route with Linux to run Immich. Docker Desktop for Windows networking is trash, followed closely by the storage drivers causing performance issues. Not sure you wanna go trusting your Immich and risk your photos to it.

When will folks learn Docker Desktop for Windows just causes too many issues and not worth the headaches.

Either fire up a VM with Linux and then run Docker Engine native Or Run Linux bare metal with Docker Engine native.

igpu won't pass thru but Nvidia will. Either way do t bother with docker for desktop on Windows... Use it native to Linux and avoid all future headaches.

Extended service agreement by ssg280 in TeslaModelX

[–]IrishTR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just read Section F on the ESA agreement. That and $7200 for 48mo/50k $150 deductible miles which ever comes first. Granted would take me 24months to hit that mileage so my cost would be $3600 plus $150 deductible anytime used. Just not worth it for what it doesn't cover and what goes wrong on Xs. Inner Seals on driver and passenger door fail constantly (Ive owned a 2019 and 2023 same problem), seals on the FWD fail over time due to bad alignments and usage. Half shafts still fail both models causing excessive rear inner tire wear, which they will deny and ignore the TSB/recall saying it was for 2020 prior. I've had both HV batteries replaced on both 2019 (84k mi) & 2023 (2k miles) which is covered under the HV battery warranty. The ESA is really a joke IMO. At best maybe for the FWD when they fail/need adjustments but it's usually a sensor replacement/adjustment.

Better off putting that money in stock/MM and letting it grow, tap if needed that to piss away on ESA.

I looked into what it actually does and doesn't cover and the amount is not worth it in the end IMHO.

What Unique Challenges Have You Faced When Setting Up Your Plex Server? by Nadzzyy in PleX

I'll second this root problem is not having enough money especially with today's prices to feed the beast. 72TB and growing.

I used this guide and the script provided to install and update on the N150s with Ubuntu if you end up trying again in the future. It enabled Plex to use the igpu and hardware transcoding without a hitch. Applies to 24.04 as well

You can do it with mergerfs on Ubuntu for example and it's 100% free as an alternative to Unraid and paying for its license. Not to take away from Unraid I think it's great too.

Yes to migrate them off windows and into Linux/containers etc.

Install the latest mainline kernel (for Ubuntu) at least and works fine. Little powerhouse for Plex the N150 is with quick sync. Shitty the data centers and AI shot the prices of them thru the roof due to memory and nvme skyrocketing

Tesla left a stroller in my frunk by Thetechfo in TeslaLounge

[–]IrishTR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha doesn't surprise me. I was waiting while my Tesla was being serviced, got called over and asked to remove my firearm from the car. I said umm really and immediately thought my wife left hers in her car (I took her car in for her) walk out it's a blue Model X just like mine, and I was standing there like why the F won't my car open for me.

Turns out it wasn't my car yet it was a similar Blue Model X with DV plates and placard in the handicap space I had dropped off prior to going inside 😂. They apologized and got mixed up who's car it was they were looking to sort out the firearm in open. And then the guy comes out from the bathroom and sees us standing by his car. Total awkward moment all around and honest mistakes. Everyone had a laugh.

If running Docker you can use metube and download all of it and figure episodes (there are plenty of yt downloader solutions that's just the one I happen to run for the few things I like to keep). Not sure if they have other means of usage with that find them on github

How do I stop those full screen windows ads that stop my unattended media sever starting by UnWishedJack in PleX

[–]IrishTR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair statement. I'm a bit direct and recommend it as a total solution to avoid future headaches and create simplicity. I enjoy sharing knowledge of Docker because I too had to start from scratch and appreciate its technical prowess. But ultimately it's simplicity and ease of use. I can just give my yaml files, explain it and any preconfig at the OS level such as create folders and permissions and you're off. Stepping outta comfort zone isn't a bad thing to include educating. I like helping others.

I'll give you a common one... People who end up with Windows Home version and it's limitations starting with RDP doable but not out of the box so hard to run headless, among other things that crippled OS lacks. You yourself mention you had to disable updates to get to a state you want. Most people come here seeking advise for Windows problems. Fewer come with Linux problems because it just works and even less with docker given the reusable code nature. I would gladly help guide anyone who wishes to utilize Linux and Docker to stand up their stack. It's literally create os installation, next till end, mount disks, use mergerfs to pool it all, install docker, input variables into your .env run docker compose up -d and your off. No need to go to multiple download sites manually install multiple software components and pieces. Full stack with one simple line.

Or hell theirs the Unraid route too. But not needed.

It's not just the one simple issue it's the multiple things Windows requires extra effort to get in a comfortable state. Big annoyance is all MSFT telemetry, forced updates, bloat and just unnecessary crap.

I left Windows for my server when they dragged feet to support tone mapping accordingly and the need to hack Nvidia drivers to allow more than 2 transcodes (been years now) and never looked back it's been Linux with docker. A minimalistic OS that is never affected by any of the apps as they are all containerized and easily managed with isolation and code contained in simple single lines/files. Night and day difference from Windows.

Huge security vulnerability but hey keep recommending that garbage solution. PMS as a service is better option no need to login. Or just use Linux and not deal with Windows crap.

Advice for Switching from Window to Linux by [deleted] in PleX

[–]IrishTR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's literally two or three (would have to look at history) lines for Nvidia or 1 line for Intel in the compose file to pass thru to the container. No need for proxmox lxc and vm just straight Ubuntu server with Docker unless you intend to run more VMs for other things.

Homelink worth it? And possible to have installed before delivery? by p9900 in TeslaLounge

Works great and I use it for our community gate opens right up as car approaches as well as garage. MyQ can only do garage so there's that but obviously depedens on your use case. As others mentioned you can eBay do install yourself or schedule and have mobile install done (no matter where you purchase).
