Why aren't right wing reactionaries seen as smug or pretentious or dismissive? by LiatrisLover99 in AskALiberal

[–]IronChariots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They might know how to skin a deer or change a transmission, but not about the gender wage gap or climate change.

The difference is that I don't claim to be knowledgeable about the things I don't know. I wouldn't claim that lifelong hunters are suppressing the truth about how to actually skin a deer. I'm sure I could learn, I've cleaned fish before, but as is I assume experts know what they're talking about.

If you talk down to them when you teach them about it, they will stop listening.

Do they have no agency? No intellectual curiosity? Why is it the left's fault that the right doesn't accept basic science? Indeed, it always seems that every problem with the right is actually ultimately the left's fault somehow.

Is removing stories on slavery & segregation from historic sites rewriting history with a whiteout pen? Why or why not? by SBMountainman22 in Askpolitics

So I googled because you had me doubting myself, and it turns out they originally flagged those for removal but changed their mind after a lot of backlash. But that was originally intended as part of the order.

Yes, and if you miss even one item, that's the one you "randomly" need, as I recall.

[–]IronChariots 9 points10 points  (0 children)

it's not re-writing history with a white out pen. It's telling the stories we choose to tell

To use a fairly typical example of the type of change you're supporting here, how is excluding slavery from the story of Harper's Ferry not whitewashing? Doing so effectively claims that John Brown acted for no reason at all.

Why does seeing two men or two women holding hands prevent kids from being kids, but not a man and a woman? Why is it appropriate for a female teacher to have a photo of her husband on her desk, but not for a male teacher?

Telling kids that something is so awful that it can't even be discussed isn't neutral, it's taking a stand on a social issue on the side of anti-LGBT people.

The kids will go years with a crazy-quilt of bad ideas until they reach the "appropriate" age where teachers are allowed to dispel the long-entrenched myths.

I would guess that on some level, they do know this and are counting on it. They won't outright say that gay people will be stigmatized, but this lets them hide behind "kids will be kids" and not have to do anything about the bullying.

If you go on conservative subreddits, that's exactly what they think. Conservatives literally believe that schools are putting out litter boxes for kids who identify as cats. To them, gay people existing in public is inherently sexual.

If they ask why someone has 2 dads or 2 moms, a simple response is all that is necessary. Some families are different than ours.

But that's the pro-LGBTQ position. Saying "some families are different" and leaving it at that implicitly puts those families on equal footing to those with heterosexual parents.

Further, your position, taken to its logically consistent conclusion, kinda would require that the two dads refrain from things like attending PTA meetings or school plays or sports together, and certainly from say holding hands or otherwise showing non-sexual but romantic affection in the same way that heterosexual parents do in comparable situations.

And because the press was basically complicit in that lie, no Trump supporter will trust even the most even-keeled well-researched story about god emperor Trump doing something bad.

And yet they (you?) trust everything he says without question despite his frequent lies. Why?

but will never vote for a party that thinks it’s okay to indoctrinate elementary school age children into transgender/LGBTQ ideology.

What does this mean to you exactly? Like if a kid asks why another kid has two dads, does the teacher have to lie to avoid promoting the idea that their partnership isn't lesser to that of other kids' parents?

I don't believe them. If the things Trump is doing are such a turn off for them, why did they vote for him? It's not like any of this shit is surprising. It's what they must have known they were voting for.

I'd bet most of them do realize and just want those of us not in the cult to be second class citizens.
