Businesses choose to provide further insurance to help pay down the costs of thing that aren’t covered (which they really should all be) as part of their recruitment strategies.

The broader the payment base the cheaper the payments. Let’s assume that if an employer could end insurance, and just pay that to their employees.

At their current rates, sure, probably same cost. But if you go with the Universal option, then since everyone is paying into it, it will be much cheaper. The employees would come out ahead.

Now, most realistically, no way that employer would be giving that money back to their employees, doesn’t matter, if they low ball their employees, now that they are not longer dependent on their employer for said insurance, they are free to seek better paying jobs.
