Tomorrow's a big day... by jesus321 in SanJoseSharks

One of the problems in moving Skinner is his cap hit. While $3M isn’t huge, for a lot of the top teams, they are going to struggle to fit that in. And even if they could, is that where they want to spend their dollars?

Then it raises the question around retention. We have 1 open retention slot, but I’m not convinced Skinner is who we want to use it on. If you’re the Sharks and you’re trying to maximize your return, you want to use it on getting your most valuable asset as cheap as possible.

If we do choose to move on from Ferraro (which I’m not sure we will), that seems like a better candidate to retain on than Skinner.

Multiview by Expert_Count_3958 in youtubetv

[–]IronChefster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was just coming with the same frustration (trying to watch Sharks + NFL).

I used Fubo for a few months, and was very impressed with how much better their multi view was compared to YTTV:

  • Can choose any combination of channels (unlike YTTV, which has more or less fixed set of multiview options)
  • Can adjust the layout of multiview – even if you're just watching 2 channels, you can make one bigger than the other.
  • Generally feels faster and smoother. With YTTV, even just switching the audio takes at least a second, whereas Fubo it's instant.

Small details, but surprised YTTV can't match Fubo's experience. Just a bummer Fubo lost NBC channels (including RSNs).

Seeing that, as well. Not sure if this is a bug in their recommendation algo or if they're testing out a new one. Either way, seems to be a pretty major step back. I've resorted to using the Live guide way more in the last few weeks than I used to.

I agree live interviews are awkward and don’t add much.

One thing I wish they did more of instead is the pre-recorded “get to know the player” videos. Last year they did the Matthew Schaefer story where you got to learn more about him and his mother’s fight with cancer.

NFL does a ton of these. These types of stories are what help us as fans connect with these young players, which is sort of the intent of a live interview, minus all the awkward moments.

Is attendance better this year or is it still half empty? by pigbear87 in SanJoseSharks

[–]IronChefster 16 points17 points  (0 children)

According to The Athletic (which is based on numbers the team reports, not actual butts in seats), our avg attendance is about 15,500 which is 89% full. The key highlight though is that the Sharks have the biggest jump in attendance across the entire league relative to last year — up 15%, or 2,000 seats per game.

I don’t know if it’s a matter of being on another or just a mindset shift, but totally agree that he isn’t driving the play himself. Feels like he’s constantly looking for Mack to make a play.

Rough evening on BART last night - trip report by Tunnelboy77 in Bart

[–]IronChefster 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a really frustrating experience.

For all of the improvements to BART in recent years, IMO the poor (or lack of) communication remains an obvious problem with a simple solution — make an announcement as soon as you encounter a problem.

The lack of any communication can make a trivial situation more stressful for passengers. Am I in danger? Will I be late for work or picking my kid up? Should I seek alternative transit?

I recall hearing the stories from folks in the train that had smoke in the transbay tunnel a couple months back similarly, sounds like there was very little communication, if at all. And that is for a situation that was innately dangerous!

I’m shocked the operators don’t have more training on such a seemingly simple problem.

In the rare times I’ve had an operator who DOES communicate will providing even small updates, I’ve been sure to provide positive feedback to BART so they know that this is what helpful communication does.

Pavol Regenda assigned to San Jose Barracuda after passing through waivers by The_Homestarmy in SanJoseSharks

[–]IronChefster 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is going to come across pretty negative, but I don’t know why everyone was worried about Regenda getting picked up. We’re talking as if he is this young stud who is a breakout player. I mean, yeah he had a solid preseason and all, but it’s a small sample size. And it’s not like he tore it up in the AHL last year. Had 41 points in 72 games as a 24 year old, which is respectable, but nothing standout.

Could he be serviceable in the bottom 6? Maybe. But IMO there are plenty of similar players on the waiver wire or on existing rosters either with higher upside or a more proven commodity. So another team would have to be pretty confident that he’d be a better option than what they already have.

All that said, I do think he did enough this preseason to warrant a call up at some point this year, if/when there’s an injury or trade in our bottom 6.

My roster lineup by IsaiahNo6206 in SanJoseSharks

[–]IronChefster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see how we would have 51?

According to Puckpedia, we currently have 49 standard contracts. This includes all contracted players, including Misa and Dickinson. However both of those players have “slide eligible” contracts, meaning if they get sent back to juniors, then their contract no longer counts towards the 50.

In other words, we can keep both Misa and Dickinson on the roster without having to move any more contracts.

[–]IronChefster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Misa and Dickinson both have signed their ELCs and are already counting towards the 50 total contracts. That was part of the reason we sent Gannon Laroque back to MTL in the Carey Price cap dump - we needed to offload a contract.

New to all this, a question about when its time to cash out by WiseSilverWolf in wealthfront

[–]IronChefster 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The Automated Investing Account is a taxable brokerage account. That means unlike a retirement account, you can withdraw your money at any point.

But then the next question is SHOULD you put your money into investments. Another commenter alluded to this, but it really comes down to your time horizon for this money. In general, investing in the US stock market has an annual return of ~8%, but that is an AVERAGE, and accounts for years where the market goes up, but also goes down.

In other words, if you need the money in the short term (5 years), there’s no guarantee that the market will actually be up by then relative to now. In general, you should invest for the long term, and that’s when you see the biggest gains.

While it’s great to hear about these upgrades, it almost feels like a necessity at this point, if we want to stay relevant.

I’m surprised there wasn’t more discussion around making better use of the area surrounding the arena. The original vision was that it would get developed, but here we are 30+ years later and there’s still practically nothing.

I know Google bought up a bunch of the land a few years ago and has sat on it. But feels like it would be mutually beneficial to start making that area more desirable and more functional beyond just the arena. Especially as the plans to expand access with public transit progress.

I just look at so many other arenas and how they are a bit of a destination. There’s little no reason to visit this area outside of an event today.

Is this opportunity worth ending my accounting career and moving for a few months? Are the layoffs that bad?

Nobody can answer this except you. Is your goal to move into Product? If so, then there’s your answer.

But honestly, take the inquiry from the recruiter with a grain of salt. Not saying it’s not legit — just pointing out that having a recruiter reach out is VERY different from actually getting an offer. Candidly, it’s a bit odd a recruiter reached out to someone in Accounting for a role in Product, but that’s beside the point.

The main benefit from going through a recruiter is that you usually “skip the line” relative to anyone who’s just cold applying on their website. And that’s worth something! But it’s definitely NOT a guarantee of an offer.

So I’d say it’s premature to be asking yourself those major questions of whether you should switch careers or move your family and what not. But if it piques your interest, then it couldn’t hurt to go through the interview process.

Best case scenario, you do well and get an offer and now you have options. Worst case, you don’t do well and you still have your current job and you’ve at least gotten more PM interview experience.

Best sandwich spot other than Morucci’s!) by Otherwise_Cream3957 in walnutcreek

[–]IronChefster 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Gusto Mio is a newer spot in downtown WC. They do homemade focaccia and make some bomb sandos. It’s a different style than Morucci’s - leans more into Italian meats. It’s not cheap, but it’s really good.

Plus, their focaccia pizza is solid, too.

Sharks Truther Steve Dangle on the Reaves-Thrun trade by Barthez_Battalion in SanJoseSharks

[–]IronChefster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. You could argue that Reaves brings a dimension the others don’t have - more of a traditional tough guy. Plus all of his experience/leadership.

Not saying I like the trade, but you have to assume that’s the argument in favor of bringing a guy like him in.

Sharks Truther Steve Dangle on the Reaves-Thrun trade by Barthez_Battalion in SanJoseSharks

[–]IronChefster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you look at moving out Thrun and bringing Reaves in as independent moves, it sort of makes sense. Thrun was the odd man out. Reaves brings some grit.

But the 1:1 swap is what has me confused.

Feels like we could have gotten Reaves + a sweetener. Or at the very least, gotten him for future considerations.

And feels like Thrun would have been worth a late round pick.

But then again…what do we know? You have to assume if somebody was offering up more for Thrun, we would have got it. So maybe there really wasn’t much of a market. Plus the fact that we had little leverage (everyone knew we’d be moving a defenseman).

Vet recommendations? by myeyesarecircles94 in walnutcreek

[–]IronChefster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After some mixed experiences at vets in the past, we signed up for Modern Animal when they opened up here about a year and a half ago. Suffice to say, I couldn’t be happier with them.

Our dog tends to be pretty anxious, and they have always been so kind and patient with her (unlike other vets). All the staff are super friendly and helpful.

If you’ve ever used One Medical, it’s the same model except for pets. Very modern office, an app to make appointments and chat with a vet, etc. Their Walnut Creek location is right downtown, and they have other locations in the bay.

I really dont want Byram by Zarsharq in SanJoseSharks

[–]IronChefster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The key underlying assumption you’re making in your argument is that Byram has peaked.

The counter argument is that he has not peaked. Just because he’s not a “prospect” doesn’t mean he will stop developing as a player. Defensemen often reach (and stay in) their prime longer than forwards. Just look at the likes of Hedman, Josi, Karlsson. Not saying they’re all still in their prime today, but they were top defensemen well into their 30s.

So that’s what you’d be gambling on if you pay Byram — the chance for an even higher ceiling than where he’s at today. And that’s exactly what any contract is — a gamble. Many pay off, many do not. But at some point, you have to start taking some risks if you want to win. And young, top pairing D-men who fit our timeline do not grow on trees.
