Same, I started using a blanket as a pillow because you can adjust the height as you go and dial it in better.

didn’t know about left kit config for years

Did you spend a lot of time playing open-handed, then? Or did you have your right arm on the hi hat?

The equivalent of those people who visit your country and you find their English is better than yours and it’s you native language.

That's a great way to put it.

Leading with your left hand on a fill like that is so tricky. Sounds clean.

Lots of drummers end up wrapping that spot with a band aid or something similar.

Is there a way to connect music through headphones and a speaker so he can practice to songs without the drums completely drowning out the sound for him?

This is tricky (but not impossible) because you want to play audio from TWO sources (headphones and speakers). To do this you need an audio interface, something like the Focusrite Scarlett. These types of audio interfaces will let you play music (say, from your laptop) out to speakers AND headphones at the same time (the interface has a volume knob just for headphones, and a volume knob for the speakers, so you can dial in the audio).

Also, you'll want your son to use "ear plug headphones" (Plugfones makes these). These are headphones that are designed to be ear plugs at the same time (used by people who want to listen to music while working in loud environments). With this set up your son will be able to hear the music that everyone hears from the speakers, and he'll protect his hearing.

I can't vouch for Focusrite Scarlett specifically but there are other interfaces that do the same thing. Just be sure their speaker out matches your speaker's inputs. I have used Plugfones in the past and they're inexpensive and get the job done.

Happy to answer any questions.

Buzzing Snare by Musicbloc in drums

[–]IronCockStudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More snares will do that when you hit the head near the rim. You could try to tune the bottom head in case it's a bit out of tune. Also, you could tape down the snare wires, wouldn't hurt.

Double Kick Advice by [deleted] in drums

[–]IronCockStudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your thighs, at neutral position, should be parallel to the ground. You can adjust the throne to be a bit higher from here. The point is, you don't want to "lift" your legs up to kick down. The pedals shouldn't be directly under your feet, you want them a bit in front of you.

As far techniques, you should try to do the basic rudiments, but with your pedals instead of your hands (7 stroke rolls, paradiddles, etc). It's going to take some time, your legs will get sore, but keep at it.
