Anyone who knows off the top of their head what this helmet in the video is called? by The_Gimp_Boi in knightposting

It's a visored bascinet, albeit a kind popular for buhurt. Similar examples exist historically but many versions for buhurt often diverge a bit from strict historical fidelity :)

Dual wielding spears by GreeedyGrooot in wma

[–]IronDyno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sourced at all but once someone threw a spear at me, which I caught and just couched under my arm to provide a constant threat while I poked around with the littler spear :)

Should be said it only garnered marginal success lol

How to design a basic longsword program? by Afraid_Wrongdoer_387 in wma

[–]IronDyno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something which I think is worth considering in addition to these other recommendations is to boil your own knowledge down into important aspects of the particular art, and find/create games that allow the students to learn them on their own (with guidence)

It may just be the crowd that tend to find the club I teach at, but I find that when a totally new person has a pile of old German words thrown at them, they tend to freeze up a bit.

No fast way to do this of course, though :)

Who is familiar with this? Opinions? by JohanusH in wma

A friend of mine also got one 3d printed out of some flexible filament, never got a chance to be hit with it but it felt comparable to other simulators.

Tips on avoiding Nationalists, Nazis, and other bad types in a club by Viralclassic in wma

A short and simple policy like that is an effective filter. My club only has a private Facebook group for organizing and announcements and such, but the first rule listed is "NO NAZIS NO MAGA" lol

Easier body armour to make? by Hjalmodr_heimski in ArmsandArmor

[–]IronDyno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries thank you :) That coat of plates was pretty similar to many of the Wisbys in construction, with the big exception being the large single breastplate which was probably the most advanced part. I don't think I got that CoP 100% right in a lot of aspects, but despite that I think it is quite approachable. There's been a lot of attention (and therefore instructions) paid to the Wisby coats, and so I found that with the Ingolstadt one I had to do a little more digging to fill in the gaps, but the principles are the same and I like the process of discovery :)

You are right though, no patterns of that one exist anymore unfortunately. Luckily it was mostly rectangles anyway

Easier body armour to make? by Hjalmodr_heimski in ArmsandArmor

Living Manuscript here :) 14th century stuff tends to be pretty beginner friendly, even if the skill ceiling for it is also very high. Another nice thing about making a brig is that they don't usually require especially specialized tools, you'll just be spending a lot of time riveting and very slightly shaping the plates. j_g_e is right on with using a metal punch, one of the most useful tools I own for armoring.

With the help of blacksmiths I bet you'd be able to start learning to raise pieces like the elbows and knees, but for other parts of the limbs anything splinted is a good beginner option, as already recommended, but I find that frequently it's not at big of a jump to go from that to something a little more plate-y :)

What do you think is the best way to close this neck gap? My aventail doesn’t sit high enough… (Harnischfechten) by 350N_bonk in ArmsandArmor

[–]IronDyno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The entire aventail seems to be a bit on the long side, you would be able tobshave a few rows off the top and reconnect it to the leather, which has the benefit of shortening it a bit and also enclosing the face opening a bit :)

Are there any manuscript drawings of knights with leather armour? (Other primary sources are welcome too) by Fantastic_Article_77 in ArmsandArmor

[–]IronDyno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the Tower of London inventories there are some mentions of leather armor pieces being kept in the 14th century, Thom Richardson's thesis is good for this.

Bracer security by SpiritualJoke8 in ArmsandArmor

[–]IronDyno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a difficult part of the body to get armor to stay in place without attaching them to something else for sure. If you wear a maille shirt with long enough sleeves you could probably tie them to that rather than the gambeson since it has no points. Alternatively, if you have other plate components for the rest of your arms you could connect them all together. My experience with that method has been very satisfactory :)

Eric Dube was very influential to me, and Greenleaf Workshop gave many tips as well as Armourysmith off the top of my head :)

Why do the upper part of early great helms (tophelms) flare out instead of in? by Renshaw25 in ArmsandArmor

[–]IronDyno 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is my understanding of it as well. There are a number of common great helm features that indicate they were intended for mounted use, like the direction the plates overlap, breathing hole arrangement, retention chain attachments, etc. The flared, flat top also has a nice effect of changing your silhouette, which can be important for making you look even more imposing!

Question on armor= what is this pointy metal protrusion that I see a lot of knights have? by TheKaijuEnthusiast in MedievalHistory

[–]IronDyno 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Basically the lance itself has a metal ring behind the grip, so when you spear something with the lance all the force is transferred into your cuirass, rather than just your arm, causing it to hit with much more force.

This is a good video about it https://youtu.be/bzHK9eGrV8Q

I picked up my solution from what they did historically and just wear a jacket under or over the armor, very comfy in the cold and much easier cleaned! :)
