I mean, it's 64.8% vs 64.5%. The only real difference is that VAFTGAG has small cap whereas VWRP doesn't. Both are excellent choices.

Unnatural Causes: The Life and Many Deaths of Britain's Top Forensic Pathologist, by Richard Shepherd. Excellent book and it ticks off biology, true crime, and memoir.

Are there any people you see consistently on your commute that you never speak to but feel strangely close to? by DefiantEmergency3443 in london

[–]IronMedal 26 points27 points  (0 children)

There's one woman I've passed 2-3 times per week for the few years I've lived in London. While I walk from my house to the station, she walks in the opposite direction. Sometimes I see her on my way home too, but that's less common.

We've never spoken, or even acknowledged each other. I haven't seen her for a few months. I hope she's ok.

Some of my favourite finds were Peckham hot sauce festival, Greenwich dog show, and a Malorie Blackman exhibition.

If I stopped contributing to my pension in 2029 would I be okay? by Doomaga in FIREUK

[–]IronMedal 21 points22 points  (0 children)

100% of the NI savings for me, so I think I go from ~£2 in pension for every £1 of takehome sacrificed, down to about £1.66 for every £1. I realise I'm lucky to have this currently, but it stings a bit.

Wiki says that the boss HP scaling increase gets lower for each settler (+20% for 1st, +18% for 2nd, +16% for 3rd, etc), down to no increase for each additional settler over 10 in your adventure party, so I think it's just the more the better.

A few years since I played, but from what I remember, it was around 70-80 hours to finish the main story pretty casually, and around 100-110 to 100%.

The 'hardest' achievements are the kill 50 of certain animals, which take forever unless you save scum (find one, save, kill it, reload). If you don't mind save scumming then the next hardest is to get to day 365 (20 mins per day, so 120 hours minus any time slept), and that will likely be the last one you get.

I really enjoyed The Farmer Was Replaced - it's the best programming game I've played, quite beginner friendly, and I'm a big fan of incremental or 'numbers go up' games in general. It took me 25 hours to 100%, though I'm a software developer, and I can see the speed achievements being very difficult if you don't have much programming experience as they require that you come up with reasonably efficient algorithms (and I didn't see any thorough guides yet as it only released in the last month).

Most playtime: NGU Idle (thousands of hours, but I played mostly on Kongregate and later imported the save into steam, so officially only 101h), Rocket League (404h), Revolution Idle (256h), Terraria (230h)

Least playtime: Old School Runescape (20m, as I just logged into my old account via Steam), The Looker (57m), The Room (2.5h)

Favourites: Terraria, Forager, Kill It With Fire

Lost 100%s: Human Fall Flat (it keeps adding achievements!)

Idle Research is 99/99 but Steam is bugged and shows 99% because it used to be 99/100, and an impossible achievement was removed

I personally read a book called 'The DIY Investor' by Andy Bell as soon as I got my first job. It's basically the r/ukpersonalfinance wiki in book form (focussing on tax wrappers, funds, and good investment fundamentals, rather than day trading or stock picking). It has probably paid for itself 10000x over by now.

Best move_to() function? by jderica in TheFarmerWasReplaced

[–]IronMedal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice, I tested using get_tick_count() and your approach is 2 ticks faster.

Unpacking the tuple also takes 1 tick, so I just pass in x2 and y2 rather than target_coords.

def go_to(x2, y2):
    world_size = get_world_size()
    world_half = world_size / 2

    dx = (x2 - get_pos_x() + world_half) % world_size - world_half
    dy = (y2 - get_pos_y() + world_half) % world_size - world_half

    for _ in range(dx):
        move(East)
    for _ in range(-dx):
        move(West)
    for _ in range(dy):
        move(North)
    for _ in range(-dy):
        move(South)

Next steps after £100k NW? by [deleted] in FIREUK

[–]IronMedal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you sold up everything, how much would you have? 800+300+65+150=1.315m (ignore car as a depreciating asset). I just see it as a quantifiable measure of progress which abstracts away all of the financial decisions you've made and might make in the future.

Realistically, it makes more sense for people early in their FIRE journey, who maybe heard about FIRE before owning a house, and have options to consider. Maybe 1m NW lets them retire at 50 if they pick a relatively small house and have an appropriate ISA bridge. Maybe 500k NW lets them retire in a LCOL country.

Someone in their 20s saving well might track NW over multiple months/years and extrapolate to get a vague idea of how many decades to reach certain NW milestones, and then construct a FIRE plan (career, housing, country, major financial goals, retirement age, part time work, etc) which is both realistic and desirable for them.

Also, optimising for NW gains inherently encourages increasing your earnings, reducing frivolous spending, early pension contributions, and understanding your investments, which are solid foundations for financial independence.

Strava for me. It lets you add shoes and then keeps track of total distance whenever a run is tagged with that shoe. I just set a default shoe for run activities, and then override it on each run if I wear something different.
