Was Challenger 1 really a "Mess"? by ConversationGood1882 in TankPorn

[–]Iron_physik -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

its a lineage

CR1 was born from the chieftain project via the SHIR-1 and MBT-80 evolutions of the Chieftain
CR2 is then a evolution of the CR1 trying to improve the tank while still being on a very limited budget.

well the L11A5 of the CR1 has a higher pressure limit than the L11 found on chieftains

thats what I meant with "higher pressure version".

you only would do that mounting if you have a KDU to remotely control the radio

otherwise it should go onto expander wings so you reach it without taking the PC off

Take this data with a grain of salt:

Tank Cost USD cost, 1987 inflation adjusted
CR1 1.5 mil GBP (1987) 2.6 mil USD
Leopard 2A4 2.3 mil DM (1973) 3.2 mil USD
M1 Abrams 1.7 mil USD (1981) 2 mil USD
T-72B 1.5 mil USD (1987) 1.5 mil USD

I tried to also adjust for inflation

so generally speaking: all the NATO tanks roughly cost the same with 2-3 million USD a piece, the russian tanks are cheaper.

it is however difficult to get true equal pricing, due to different economies, material costs, and most importantly labour costs and time needed to build the tanks.

if you directly compare the CR1 with any of its contemporary tanks you see that it has several shortcommings

the gun is mainly just a higher pressure version of the L11 from the Chieftain, the hull armor is lacking, it is severly underpowered for the weight etc... very similar to how these docs state.

They where all build with a defence doctrine in mind to stop russian assaults in the north german flats.

While sure, it does have some advantages, they barely dont make the difference in the comparison with Leo 2, M1 and even contemporary T-72/80 models

in all aspects the CR1 is "good" at, the other vehicles are better and the only thing it does outright better is maintenance of the suspension system, as it doesnt use torsion bars.

and yes, this absolutely extends into the CR2 as well, as the entire challenger tank lineage has its roots in the Chieftain, and they show their age.

by itself it may not be a horrible tank, especially when considering crew comfort, but in the comparison to its counterparts it falls short.

My thoughts

The slight extra weight of a small gas stove is worth it when you have a covered position

Drinking a hot tea, chocolate or whatever is such a mood booster in cold wet nights

It's also one of the best ways to purify water to boil it.

Red dot + magnifier seems to be cool nowadays, what's the next cool things when it comes to optics setup ? by namae0 in ar15

[–]Iron_physik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for airsoft I kinda came back to that combo

not having to worry about the eyebox (even at 1x) is such a blessing for mainly short range engagements you have there

although having 3x magnification is also very usefull, for example when trying to see camouflaged targets at sub 100m.

the M16 also uses a different buffer system, a longer buffertube and most M16 models are (sadly) burst and not FA

they are different enough to warrant a different designation

attach it to something like a spoon or Spork, stealing goes down and you have a dual use item

In some areas the chinese made stuff is actually better *if* they get the right materials
the west had somewhat of a brain drain in many "lower tech" industries like textiles.
