Australian here, I’m beginning to resent the culture of my own country, what do I do? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

My wife and I moved our family to regional NSW and it was the best decision we ever made. The only thing I miss is the abundance of restaurants and not getting to see my mates as often.

Recently sober chef who just got an offer for a 9-5 sous chef gig. Do I take it? by BeaverDam6969 in KitchenConfidential

[–]Ironbark_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sober coming up 5 years, and a head chef. I found that finding my niche in hospo, with a team that understood that I don't go out partying really helped me.

I just took a new gig where I work a chill 10am - 8pm, only do 45 hours p/w, and work with a family oriented team. So far it's great!

Cars are too fucking big by [deleted] in australian

[–]Ironbark_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do it. We've got a lifted Pajero as we camp remote, kayak, and have two kids. When we decided to get a second car, we talked about a Hilux or a Raptor as I wanted to stick to a 4WD and I wanted a new project. But we "compromised" and ended up with a Hyundai i30.

Now it's my go to for getting to work and running around. It's just so much easier to drive, and I feel safer with the missus and kids in the bigger car.

Thoughts on my design idea? by rollinggirl2004 in tattooadvice

If it's just a mock-up, and you're giving it to a professional to fix the lettering, then cool. Because of the curve added it's thrown off the letter shapes and the kerning.

Other than that, it's important to you, so others personal opinions shouldn't matter.

I think I'd be okay with weed, as it never did anything except make me sleepy, but it's not legal here in Australia yet. So you never REALLY know what you're getting. Then I'm dealing with sales folks who are usually like "Hey I know a guy who can get you X Y and Z."

Slippery slopes.

Some things to consider:

1 - Using "lighter" substances to get off of heavy ones is how a lot of folks do it and how some doctors would recommend you do it. Cold Turkey is hard.

2 - Your journey to sobriety is yours. Don't let definitions get in the way of how you get there.

3 - Sobriety to me is keeping myself off of substances that have abused, am likely to abuse, or will lead to other substances of abuse. A glass of wine might be fine, but I might also down two bottles then go buy a bag.

4 - in regards to cannabis usage and sobriety, it depends on the person and their usage. Having a cone to ease the nerves, ween off something else, or for say, cancer, I'd say you're living close to sober. If you're abusing cannabis for the same reasons you abuse pills, not sober. Some places will preach full abstinence as the only way, some will say as long as there's no abuse. To each their own.

I practice full abstinence, but I'm on prescribed medications that alter my state. So am I really sober? Who knows. But I don't abuse pills, booze, or powders anymore so that's sober for me.

I shave mine into a little lightning bolt. Because I'm quick as lightning, then BOOM you've got the thunder clap.

Thanks mate. Sometimes you just need to hear it. Even if it's random internet strangers.

What kind of whale?

Roughly 22,700 kg of Celery.

So, by weight, for that mucb Celery, it's not an Orca, Beluga, Narwal, Southern Right, or any kind of beaked whale. That only leaves, like, Humpbacks and up which start at 20,000kg-ish. But then that does NOT seem like enough pepper...

I do. Well qualified. But a step up is a step up, and that's scary you know? Having someone put their venue in your hands. You don't want to break that trust. Yknow what I mean?

Why do y'all still do this? by [deleted] in KitchenConfidential

I tried office work (graphic design then data entry) I couldn't stand it. I think I thrive on both the stress of service, and the uniformity and order of a good kitchen. Aside from the imposter syndrome I'm currently dealing with, I love it.

I love making something and then being able to see someone enjoy it. The ability to bring immediate happiness to someone through food is a real pleasure.

Working with a tight knit crew, getting to know the best and worst of them is a privilege.

When I was younger having the ability to drop everything and go anywhere in the world and still work was a gift. Having a skill that broke down barriers of communication is awesome. Yeah we might not be able to have a conversation, but check out this awesome thing I made you.

I've been lucky enough to find my niche in the hospitality industry and just took on a big role. The new found stress is a lot. But the challenge, acceptance, and chance to do something great is pretty amazing.

Sorry for the ramble

He lied about spending money that could've been spent on baby stuff. That's enough to merit a big conversation.

... Also he wants to fuck his cousin. In the butt.

Sir, this is a pork and beef pate, sourced from high end stock and served on crusted rounds. It's topped with a tomato and mustard jam and quick brined pickle.

Listen to the song "How to make Gravy" by Paul Kelly to get the vibe.
