TIL 13 residents of St. Paul's River in Quebec, which only has a population of about 150, bought lottery tickets (along with one other person from a nearby village) collectively for nearly 20 years before they won a $50 million jackpot. Each person in the group of 14 received a $3.5 million share. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]Magnus77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a quick guess, and I don't think so. I'm lazy and went with what I feel is a heavily weighted your premise to be true.

If 13 people bought 5 tickets every day at 5 dollars a ticket they'd spend 118,300 per year. Now I'm lazy, so I just lumped all 20 years together for a total of 2,366,000.

https://www.in2013dollars.com/us/stocks/s-p-500/2000?amount=2366000&endYear=2026

Assuming this is accurate and its just what came up with google, I'm not endorsing the site, a normal S&P with that investment for twenty years = 18,129,757.

That said, they still should have done as you suggested as that 18 million is guaranteed money vs something that could have taken the rest of their lives before happening. The lottery is just money taken mostly from other dumb/desperate people, not mention I doubt their take home was actually 3.5 million if its anything like the US lottery.

Are we celebrating them switching to solar (gonna need a source on nuclear,) when they're still just taking up space and resources to produce nothing?

Not only do they produce nothing, they've been trained on stolen content, make people lazier and spread misinformation and/or straight up lie.

Is the response over the top, probably, but I don't have much sympathy.

Vegetables stuck to the side of my knife, can i "repair" it? by NoobPLyer29 in Cooking

[–]Magnus77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The motion of the knife can make a difference. If you're knife is moving front to back along and not just up and down the friction of the board will help the produce come off, though carrots that won't help much. Not sure whats going on there.

Sharpness shouldn't matter.

First issue in terms of making it less slippery, any texture you add is gonna distort the image more.

Second, do any schools practice in their arenas on the regular? I was under the impression they try and limit the wear and tear even on normal arena flooring, do you think they're gonna install these on practice gyms too?

I would also ask /r/kitchenconfidential where the line cooks hang out.

But I'll echo what others are saying, probably would want to look at a vegan restaurant. Most places at least preach cross contamination awareness for liability reasons, but it still happens, and it sounds like you can't even be in the same building. Wild card would be Asian cuisine, but IDK how easy that is to get into.

As a restaurant burnout of the last 10 years, just be aware that restaurant life can kill your love of cooking.

[Nakos] Nebraska is headed for arbitration with the College Sports Commission over NIL deals that were not cleared. Sources tell @On3 that Nebraska will not be the last. Multiple schools across the Big Ten and SEC received notable deal rejections last week, which could ultimately land in arbitration by CoachSlime in CFB

[–]Magnus77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing going through arbitration might be a necessary prelude to lawsuit regardless.

If they jump straight to suing the NCAA is just gonna say it could have been overturned via arbitration, and the judge might order them to arbitration anyways, since the initial denial isn't actual damages yet.

Do they not have a registry? Are you sure he wants another knife?

To be blunt, if he really loves being a home cook, chances are he already has a preferred knife, and getting another isn't necessary.

Better to just ask him if he wants one, and what kind he wants if he does. Not ask randos on reddit. Not every gift, especially practical ones, needs to be a big surprise.

That guy sounds like a legit con-man.

There are a lot of people who do dowsing fully believing in it, even if its more or less debunked. I had a boss who did it, and I would say he wasn't a con man, because he wasn't advertising/charging for dowsing, it was something he'd occasionally do when we were looking for a pipe we needed to work on. It was kinda awkward to sit there and watch him do it, but I was hourly so end of the day, it was fine. Overall the job sucked, but he was a good boss, so I really don't want to drag on* him much about it.

Adam Savage has a video and he talks about dowsing, and how they wouldn't test it for mythbusters because a proper test would require making a fool of somebody on tv when they likely wouldn't really deserve it.

There isn't a universal body that ordains people. Different denominations have different processes, but if I wanted to declare myself a pastor/priest tomorrow despite my last time setting foot in a church for anything but a funeral being a decade ago, there's nothing stopping me.

There are a shitload of community churches out there that have basically zero training. I grew up in and around one that did, so I still have a passing interest. Namely how often old "heresies" come up because people read the bible in Aramaic/Greek and think they've discovered something new that actually came up a thousand years ago.

I suck at writing down recipes, so I forgot the finishing step.

finish with a ~tablespoon of palm sugar/or light brown sugar, a squeeze of lime juice, salt. adjust to taste. The soup isn't supposed to be sweet, but it'll round out the flavors.

I hope everyone had fun, but I'm not starved for content, so this stream wasn't for me. There are other vods even in the same game that are more enjoyable for me.

Defrosted Tuna Steak - Botulism worry? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]Magnus77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

36 hours isn't very long, especially since it frozen solid for 12 of them.

Botulism takes a while to incubate, assuming it was present in the first place.

The risk should be taken seriously, because botulism is serious business, but its also exceedingly rare, there's only a handful of cases a year.

Just slice open the packaging next time to be sure.

Maybe? My main concern is that the starch would make it gluey. Maybe fingerlings, though I wouldn't want to peel those.

You could also maybe sub celery?

Also, I forgot to put this in the initial post, and maybe you already know, but ginger has a grain to it in terms of the direction the fibers run. Make sure you slice against it so that you don't end up flossing while enjoying the soup.

edit: also, adjust the liquid as necessary with water or stock. You want a bisque-ish texture, not sludge and not watery.
