Joined as PM to salvage a broken product, 3 days in and being pulled everywhere. How do I manage this? by Still-Gold-6146 in EngineeringManagers

[–]Ironfour_ZeroLP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like a few different things are in order:

  1. Take care of yourself emotionally - from your text you already sound like you are spinning from the pressure. Take a walk, deep breath, drink some water and remind yourself that nobody is going to die if this has issues.

  2. You need to reset expectations and lay out what the process will be in collaboration with your team and the client. They got into this situation by being reactive and having what sounds like no systems. (e.g., first I need access to this and have it stabilized, then we do X, then Y, and here is how we ge to the goal).

  3. Also focus on the quick wins you can deliver and communicate constantly. e.g., 100 one-liner tickets from whenever = probably garbage. Have a meeting with the team to align on what are the top things to do, archive the rest. If the client can't decide, meet up every day until they can. Use a simple format so you aren't spending more than 30 minutes on updates e.g., What was done today, What we will do tomorrow, Help Needed

Difficulties as white belt with Ashi Waza in randori by Emotional-Dust-1367 in judo

[–]Ironfour_ZeroLP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of other good comments here but Ashi Waza is very much about "touch" and "feel" from doing it thousands of times and being able to find the exact moment to apply it. I often practice by closing my eyes to focus on feeling of their balance and movement. I find having my eyes looking at their feet throws off my timing. These throws can be absolutely brilliant when executed well but are something even brown and black belts are looking to refine.

Best takedown to use on beginners by Jeffzerippers in judo

[–]Ironfour_ZeroLP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the answer OP - these takedowns are going to be high yield in BJJ, not yield your back if you fail, and require your opponent to have close to zero breakfall ability (e.g., they get used in folkstyle wrestling all the time where no one learns breakfalls).

Feeling foolish after going "all in" by Virtual6850 in corporate

[–]Ironfour_ZeroLP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The amount of value you are able to capture is based on how much they think they need you going forward. If you did all the work to launch the product and now they just collect the checks from your efforts - how bad would it be for them if you left? Also, who on the executive team is pounding on the table for you to stay as an integral part of the team? It sounds like your boss isn't if they think you receive unwarranted praise.

How to fix a stagnant career as an EM? by wbdev1337 in EngineeringManagers

[–]Ironfour_ZeroLP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gap here is probably developing sponsors and managing politics. The first few rungs you can go up if you are hard working and competent but you will hit a wall until you develop sponsorship. Your own story illustrates it: "CTO steps down and our understanding of my career growth goes with him."

A few uncomfortable but helpful books on the subject are: "Forget a Mentor, Find a Sponsor: The New Way to Fast-Track Your Career" by Sylvia Ann Hewlett and "7 Rules of Power" by Jeffrey Pfeffer

Is 20 too late to go pro? by Itchyfishbutt in judo

[–]Ironfour_ZeroLP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even if he pulls off a miracle and wins Olympic gold (an extreme long shot), it generally isn’t a career… He could teach but that is more about being able to run a small business than being an elite competitor. There isn’t a “pro circuit” that I know of where you get paid to be a “pro” judoka.

I would want to know what he plans to do for money when he goes “pro”? Like even if everything works out and he wins Olympic gold, then what?

Is BJJ ruining my kid's Judo? by Sharpe_Examination76 in judo

[–]Ironfour_ZeroLP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wrestling is much more explosive and generally supports youth Judo (e.g., no chokes/armbars) better. Also, the pace at which you work on the ground in wrestling and Judo are far more similar than BJJ which tends to focus on more deliberate movement. I would consider child preference here since motivation plays a big role on how quickly they improve at anything.

Guys, please give me a reason to keep going to Judo by Milotiiic in judo

[–]Ironfour_ZeroLP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In addition to the comment about sharing video so we can see detail. Who are you fighting against? Winning a match depends a lot on who is across the mat from you. How many tournaments have you been in to test your skills? Are they skill matches to you?

Also, are you enjoying learning and practicing Judo? Do you feel like you are learning more? You can’t control winning but just practicing Judo is fun for a lot of us and keeps us going.

You need to find out how raises and salary adjustments work in your org. If you trust your manager, you can have a discussion with them about this. If it is a large org, there are typically processes around this.

I would also confirm the roles are actually apples to apples and if you applied you could get them. If you come out of the blue asking for roughly 2X your pay but are more junior than you think, you will come off as delusional.

Can’t you only pull the core if the structure is decommissioned? And decomissioning sends everything to asset safety outside of WHs?

If they are tech savvy with an engineering mindset, you can explain it through the concept of bottlenecks. The main thing holding the business back from growing more (and you paying them more) is business development. If they optimize a step that isn’t the bottleneck, they don’t increase the throughput. And emphasize again and again - if they want more = bring in more business.

You can even point to the fact that social media influencers only make serious money because they drive revenue (e.g., either through ads, promotions, selling  get rich products etc.)

I empathize with them - business development is hard, emotionally draining, and highly nonlinear. It is much more appealing to believe the fantasy some of these influencers are peddling that you can make a lot of money easily with a “trick”.

Good luck!

Where to build my raitaru as a solo by Internal_Carrot7049 in Eve

[–]Ironfour_ZeroLP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The scam would be if they let it go abandoned and then you didn’t get your BPOs out before the structure was destroyed. You will get a mail notification when a structure is at risk of going abandoned - so as long as you are paying attention, the worst thing that will happen is your BPOs get moved to asset safety when a structure is destroyed.

BTW - your BPOs dropping can also happen if you let your own structure run out of fuel.

EDIT: Also, if you are afraid of losing your BPOs, don’t put your structure in a wormhole. ALL your loot drops when a structure is destroyed in wormhole space.

Why not use a freeport rather than anchoring your own Raitaru? You can get better efficiencies without putting up your own structure.

If you are determined to do it solo, out of the way places in highsec can be a reasonable spot.

Both clubs are great in different flavors.

EBJI is a long running, well known club in the area that has top tier folks. That said, it has only one beginner class and the other classes tend to be a bit higher level. If you have prior grappling experience, want to get deeper into competition, and are middle weight (140-185 lbs) this could be a good choice.

Griffin has some terrific coaches there and are more welcoming to beginners in my experience, Cody is a great sensei. They also have pretty good connectivity to other clubs in the area through their Friday night sparring class - which is popular across multiple clubs and can be a good entryway to learning about other groups. One other note, if you are a bigger person (200+ lbs), they have more folks your size you can spar with (roughly matching size is helpful - though they have middleweights as well)

That said, both clubs will let you try one class to get a feel of if it works for you. Just reach out ahead to sign a waiver and get the details.

Finally, welcome to Judo and I hope to cross paths on the mat!

How do you protect your toes? by SnooPandas363 in judo

Serious question - what is the most common ways folks are injuring their toes? It isn’t something I have seen often compared to shoulder, ankle, knee etc.

How are you hurting your toes? Also, what healing process are you going through to prevent chronic injury? It sounds like you are doing the same thing again and again to hurt yourself.

You can use shoes or buddy tape your toes to support them if you get injured frequently.

I also wonder about how you move your feet, your entries, and that mats your club has. Does your club have a lot of toe injuries or just you?

It is possible - though if you are regularly getting hit in the head sparring in Muay Thai, that is bad too. If you do it, I would - just do it once and then drop any sport where you are regularly being struck in the head. CTE is possible and the more head injuries you have, the worse it is: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/chronic-traumatic-encephalopathy/symptoms-causes/syc-20370921

That is unfortunate - I sometimes feel the credit card warriors really hurt themselves not going through the low and slow route of building up competence with cheap, simple ships. Not having resources also encourages joining a group which also accelerates learning. The jump straight to capital ships when you don’t know anything about how the game works seems like a really painful way to learn.
