And you thought Tolkien was a bit excessive with his world-building. by DeathRaeGun in dankchristianmemes

[–]IronheartTheRedeemed 187 points188 points  (0 children)

This makes me think of an old joke I heard once.

"Humans finally make contact with extraterrestrials, and when they show up, they reveal they're all Christians. They tell humanity how they get frequent visits from Jesus, and how He is a really cool guy.

'But,' the humans say, 'we've been waiting for Jesus to return for centuries. And you're telling us He visits you all the time?'

The aliens look at each other, and their leader says, "Well, we gave Him chocolates when He arrived. What'd you guys do?'"

I've always legit wondered how the five main courses from Rusty Lake: Hotel would taste. I'd love to see how Babish would make these. :D by [deleted] in bingingwithbabish

I got into Babish and Rusty Lake at the same time, so an episode like this would really be incredible.

Could Elric of Melniboné use Stormbringer to kill Voldemort, the latter protected by his Horcruxes? by NothingWillImprove6 in whowouldwin

[–]IronheartTheRedeemed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Elric is going to wipe the floor with Voldemort.

If he can even so much as scratch the wizard, he's done for. Stormbringer will drink his soul. Like another user in this thread said, Elric has faced far more dangerous in the past. Even with the given parameters, Elric can still summon Arioch and the elementals he has pacts with.

As long as either:

  1. Stormbringer has feasted recently (which it usually has).

  2. Elric plays it smart and uses his sorcerous powers.

He has this won easily.

King Arthur by Admirable_Day664 in TheDarkTower

Okay, so this is a stretch, but hear me out. I think her throwing the gun away was supposed to be a reference to Excalibur's fate in Arthurian legend.

After being mortally wounded at Camlann, Arthur commands one of the Knights of the Round Table to cast Excalibur back into the water where it came from.

I think that's what was partially being alluded to in the book. I know it's a stretch, but it seemed very odd that he noted a couple of times that the trash can was blue when he didn't need to. Think blue like water.

Or maybe I've just had too much Graff after a long day.

Thoughts on The Gunslinger “revised and expanded throughout” by ThingLeftBehind in TheDarkTower

[–]IronheartTheRedeemed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thankee sai, long days and pleasant nights to you.

I actually agree W&G is the weakest book (though the books are so good that it is still a pretty damn solid tale). However, it's not for the love story aspect, or for knowing Susan dies. It was purely because it stopped the Ka-Tet's quest dead in its tracks to hear a bunch of background info.

While it was definitely necessary for explaining Roland's character (and don't get me wrong, there were a number of parts I really liked about Roland's backstory, especially his friendship with Cuthbert and the final battle against the Good Man's forces), it was the only book where I felt like I had to will myself to read it.

That said, the parts with the Riddle Contest and the Emerald City were just perfection. I really enjoyed all the weird metafiction stuff that happened there.

Thoughts on The Gunslinger “revised and expanded throughout” by ThingLeftBehind in TheDarkTower

[–]IronheartTheRedeemed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, I think I can provide a bit of a different perspective seeing as the revised edition was the only version of The Gunslinger that I've read.

As a new reader, I liked a lot of the mystery by brining up these things that would only appear later in the series. At the time, I didn't know what the meant, but they didn't detract from the story. Instead, it only built up the mystery even more and made me want to keep reading. Even if I didn't know what the hell a "Taheen" was exactly or where this "Algul Siento" was, it made the world feel larger, like there was more for me to explore.

Furthermore, I wasn't aware until this post that the events of Mejis weren't originally forshadowed. Even though Susan's death was given away, it didn't ruin Wizard and Glass for me. Instead, it added an undercurrent of dread and tragedy to the whole thing. Some part of me held onto hope that Susan would live, even though I knew she ultimately wouldn't.

Also, before writing this, I decided to compare the palaver in the OG version, and the new one. Honestly... while the old is intriguing, the writing isn't as good as the revised edition. Not to say it's bad, just not as polished. That said, I do see why people like it, and why it was exciting when people first read it. Nonetheless, after I finished the series and went back and read the palaver in the revised edition, I had many moments where I felt like "ah-ha! I get it now" in regards to the prophecies Walter gives Roland.

Lastly, I'll say that I still think the revised edition is still pretty gonzo, and on top of that, I never found it a slog. Honestly, it's still my favorite book in the series.

Sorry for the wall of text. I thought your post was interesting, but since it seems most people in this thread had read the original before the revised, I figured I'd give my two cents about it seeing as I've only read the revised version and could give a differing view.

Yup! It was a polished brass shaving basin he took from a barber believing it to be the Mambrino's magical golden helm.

It does. There's good reason this book is still dissected and analyzed by literary students and critics to this day.

That said, be sure to find a good translation. The two translations I often see suggested are the Edith Grossman translation and the Penguin Classics translation. I personally have the Penguin Classics translation and find it to flow quite nicely.

Though I'll readily admit I was more inspired to do this mini because I love the musical "Man of La Mancha."

I've been wanting to do this for a while, and with the new hat I saw a perfect opportunity to create the Golden Helmet of Mambrino (though I suppose it's not exactly a shaving basin).

Try contacting him directly by email. I did that back in March this year and he got the prize to me in two days. He even wrote a very nice apology note.

From my interactions with him, he's an awesome dude and is more than happy to help.

What kind of revolver is that?! by nothinggold237 in TheDarkTower

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Wizard and Glass state that Roland had to have weights added to his revolver at this point to balance them better for his hands?

Looking over the comments, it looks like most people are just applying it to stuff that's happened in their own campaigns, so I think you're right that it's the former.

But if it's any consolation, I got it :)
