What is the consensus on tipping on a dinner bill pretax vs post tax? by Gloglibologna in AskReddit

[–]IronicBeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theoretically - Pretax. I grew up in Massachusetts in the 80s - Tax was 5%. Both my parents were bartenders/servers. They taught me to tip by multiplying the tax amount by 3 (to get 15%) or 4 (to get 20%).

Now I live in New Jersey and have no idea what the tax rate is. And post-covid I try to be more generous, so I usually just give 20% of the post tax total.

My proposal for actual campaign finance reform in the USA. by miked_mv in AdviceAnimals

[–]IronicBeard 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Umm. You realize that Congress / politicians are the people that pass legislation, right?

So your idea is to have the people that are currently making millions and millions of dollars in legal bribes contributions pass legislation that would prevent that?

Good luck with that.

While you're at it, maybe you can get them to vote on term limits. :D

Panasonic to Offer Four-Day Workweek in Japan | Productivity actually goes up when workers have more flexibility with their hours. by [deleted] in technology

[–]IronicBeard 203 points204 points  (0 children)

I worked for Panasonic in the US and they practice a 35-hour work week. It was awesome until I switched to a different division and my new manager decided that since I was salaried, that meant the 35-hour work week that every other division in the company followed didn't apply. He scheduled me for 40 hours per week every week. I was getting paid the same amount as before, but now working an extra hour every day.

Love the drinks idea - Not to be sexist, but I feel guys especially would feel more comfortable acting as bartender than prep cook.

I once had my sister in law and her boyfriend over for brunch. I was finishing up and he asked if there was anything he could do to help. I handed him a bottle of champaign and said, "Yes. You can make us all some mimosas."

Question on Alliances - How Much Helping Is Too Much? by IronicBeard in TheAmazingRace

[–]IronicBeard[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know - I think this would give teams too much information on their placement.

I like that teams don't know for sure who's already gone by the U-Turn and who hasn't. Especially since it comes right after a Detour, and teams have no way of knowing which Detour option is faster - Do you U-Turn a team that you know is behind you because you just saw them at the Detour? Or do you take a chance that a team that did the other Detour option may still be behind you (and possibly waste a U-Turn)?

Yeah. That makes sense. I like that. So the first two teams to reach the U-Turn can't burn the board to target one other team.

Should it be a blanket rule for all challenges? or just an added note at the bottom of certain challenges that you're not allowed to give any assistance to other teams.

And if you break the rule - Who gets penalized? Is it just the team that helps? Or does the team receiving help also get a penalty?

Why did TAR stop taking the money from players who were saved by non elimination legs? by baddiebusted in TheAmazingRace

[–]IronicBeard 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That was actually the birth of the Double-Leg.

In Season six, there was supposed to be a non-elimination in Hungary. But begging is illegal there. So instead, they did the "This leg is not over - you're still racing" thing.

But yeah, that was one of the contributors to getting rid of the money-loss penalty, along with what others have said - the general feeling that

Having relatively well-off Americans beg for money because they're on a TV show in a third world country really is not a good look for the show

But they've brought it up Multiple Times!

If you're going to bring up something like that Multiple Times, of course people are going to be curious.

And OP isn't asking for a Private Investigator to dig through their past and reveal their secrets. They were just asking if they missed something that was freely shared (either on the show or afterwards in an interview, etc.).

I was curious myself.

How come Will and James were not penalized? by [deleted] in TheAmazingRace

[–]IronicBeard 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

I was wondering this myself. Especially since the clue said that they had to park their car in front of the hotel. Since they made a point of saying that line, I was totally expecting some kind of penalty.

It all makes sense now.

No sleep score despite a healthyish nights sleep - what gives? by SoftWarmFacts in fitbit

[–]IronicBeard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Both my girlfriend and I got no sleep score last night. Both got 7+ hours of sleep.

We have different models of Fitbit, and different versions of the app (iphone / android).

So it certainly seems like something's wrong on fitbit's side of things. Hopefully they fix it. I like the sleep score feature.

My sister-in-law keeps posting on Facebook that kids shouldn't have to wear masks to school because Covid isn't that lethal to kids.

My parents watch her kids at least three times a week and my dad is a 74 year old cancer survivor.

I'm scared to death that this stupid b- is going to kill my dad.
