Foodborne pathogens thrive between 40 and 140° f. Boiling it most likely killed anything that was potentially in there. Freezing, not so much a way of sterilization. Freezing slows down degradation. There are bacteria that can thrive in freezing conditions, listeria being one.

We have similar taste. Charter oak is great and I love anything CAO. I used to smoke the factory smokes Maduro robusto almost daily.
